I heard people like to do 2 batteries at least with 1 normal marine battery (higher amp hour, or battery bank of amp hours) and then an agm battery. They don't always have all them be AGM because of the cost. But this idea is they have the starter or whatever pulling the initial power draw first from the AGM battery. And people say AGM have slightly higher volts like 13 volts +? It seems like this is the reason for the AGM battery to control the power dip of an inverter wanting to shut off the power to the batteries when the voltage wants to drop too much with the AGM battery having slightly higher initial volts level? (AGM having slightly higher voltage than other batteries.) What this means? If this idea of my question works then you wouldn't need to have all of the batteries in the battery bank be AGM batteries, you'd only need the key starter power draw battery that's getting most of the juice pulled through it to be the AGM higher cost battery with everything else being cheap stuff. .... And I have concerns about you guys wanting to do lithium batteries with trolling. You know you are going out into water... lithium reacts to water. Explosively so. If you were to get those batteries wet ... could be a bad situation. ... Hope someone can reply on this. Thank you.

Sammy, I'm fairly new to this. Was out in my kayak today (first time this year) and my battery failed after about an hour of moderate use. Question is, does it make sense that the battery voltage would test out at 11.4 volts and still not have the power to push the kayak?
@SammyBenitez4 жыл бұрын
11.4 volts is really low, it makes sense it died. Typically on a full charge 13.2V is about normal off the charger, once you start dipping below 12.7v you’re not going to want to put too much more draw on that battery (to protect it long term). 12.2v is considered 50% life remaining, and you don’t want to take lead cell batteries below that or you’ll shorten the life. Things happen, you need it after you dip below 12.2. Just know if you had “1000 charge cycles” with that battery, you now will get less charge cycles by running it down below 50%.
@jackabato69974 жыл бұрын
@@SammyBenitez Thanks, the battery is a Deka but no where on the case does it tell me its ah rating. The kayak is a 2016 and was a demo so the battery is 4 seasons old. I keep it on a battery tender all the time....not sure if that's a good idea or not. It gets used about 15 times a year so it hasn't seen too many cycles from me. That said. it sound like it's time for a new battery. It charged all night last night, the charger went to maintain mode and I only got about 12.6 volts this morning at full charge.
@noahriding5780 Жыл бұрын
There's 2 things that could have happened. Number 1; it could have died period. Number 2; it could have just dipped on the power and tripped a power inverter or motor safety setting. Let me explain this. 11.4 volts is a bit low. Many power inverters have a safety setting to shut off at about 10.5-ish volts. So it will shut off. (Is this the same for trolling motors? Do they have this safety setting like inverters have?) They do this shut off because if the power drops below that its supposedly harming the batteries, battery bank etc. So what that means is... if you apply a load to a battery that's already weaker than the full 12 volts, it will drop down up to 2 volts. So in this case while carrying a charge that 11.4 volt battery could have dipped down to 9.4 volts and tripped whatever safety shut off settings are there. (I don't know if you can turn these settings off without taking it apart. And presumably some of these trolling motors may have settings similar to power inverters of a shut off if the power in batteries gets too low.) 11.4 volts also shows the battery was already damaged.

So if you don't want to damage the battery's life, don't take it below 50%? That means a 55lb trolling motor that pulls about ~40-45amps on full speed you can get about 1 full hour on a 100aH battery before you should quit? Is that right? I wanted to get a 55lb trolling motor for my kayak, to have extra thrust for going against currents, but I might get a 30 now just to have more battery life.

That is correct. If you want to protect the batteries long term usage, you don’t want to over drain a lead cell. You can just not use the highest setting on the 55lb motor unless you really need it.

The cost of Lifepo4 are coming down. They are a lithium iron battery that's far safer and more rugged than lithium ion. They are half the weight of lead acid for the same capacity, they are rated for 2000 cycles compared to 500 cycles plus you can use 80 to 90% of the capacity without degradation compared to only 50% for lead acid. If you shop around online, you can get a 12 volt 100 AH in the $500 range. Even cheaper if you're willing to build your own from cells. I'm running an old 20 lb thrust Pflueger trolling motor on a kayak with two paralleled 12 volt 16Ah lifepo4 batteries that only weigh 4 lbs each. The batteries cost me $45 each.

Anything over 55lb is typically 24v, so I’m not sure what 12v is running 68lb. But if it was 12v and 68lbs, you would draw around 60ah. You wouldn’t want to drain the battery much past 50ah, so you would have an hour or so of full throttle speed.

@terrywolford7880 Жыл бұрын
I can't say your choice is wrong in a battery but Lithium are getting cheaper and will likely last up to 10 years so the price per year is likely lower for Lithium. Also consider again the weight because your heavier lead acid is having to push that extra weight over several hours so a less powerful and smaller lighter Lithium would be required to replace 1 lead acid battery. But again no wrong answer just different options to consider. I really need a second battery for my trolling motor but I had just recently bought a new lead acid battery and feel I need a second 12v battery as I troll a lot and use my trolling motor in anchor mode a lot. I want to buy a Lithium but I don't believe it would work well in parallel with a lead acid so I may be forced to buy another lead acid for compatibility purposes. I use a 14v Lithium 50 AH to power my electronics including my livescope and it has never gone below 13.1 volts and I expect it will last as long as I can stand to fish in a day. Not so with my trolling motor battery.
@SammyBenitez Жыл бұрын
So I actually did purchase lithium batteries a couple years later, which I made a video on as well. But I still ran three 12v lead cell Duracells with three 12v Ampere Time Lithiums.
