This is a really good video. No BS, just telling it straight. I must add, I've been super impressed by the locally made Goodyear Wrangler A/T Adventure tyres - even if money was no object, I'd still pick them over Coopers or BFGs!

All-terrain tires from a major company (BF Goodrich LT285/70R17) that does not extend beyond the guards. Mount them on all steel rims 17". You do not need two spares. Maybe if you drove Africa twice you might need it but probably not. If you are overlanding, extending tires beyond the guards will raise questions will draw attention to the vehicle by local police in some countries. Huge tires OK if you are mudding or rock crawling locally, not overlanding.

Indeed, the 285/70 R17 is a great sized tyre, same as Raptor. little more coverage on sand than the 265. In terms of spares, it depends how deep you are planning to go. In remote parts of northern Namibia I'd take 2 spares, sharp rocks and big distances between towns.

no money option is to run tyres at a lower pressure. So if you are running at 2.5 bar, reduce to 2bar for tar. Spending money you change the leaf springs for coils at the back and quality shocks. You also get parabolic suspension which has leaf spring and shocks working together, so you don't lose payload but improve ride.

Keep it simple, stick with some good quality tyres from reputable names and don't go too big. It's better to gently loose traction and use some maxtrax to get out, than break ujoints and CVs in the middle of nowhere. I'll be honest overlanding only 1% of the time ground clearance became an issue, the rest of the time was on gravel and on tar. A good name, amount of wear, and correct pressures is more of a concern than diameter.

Odd contradiction: talks about how good tires are that they can go all around Africa with only one or two punctures but then says one must have two spares. Seems to me that with the right tire size (availability), buying a replacement along the way saves a considerable amount of weight and space with a relatively low risk.

Depends how deep into the bush you are going, some places in Namibia, many hours drive down gravel to nearest tyre shop. Even great tyres fail in heavy conditions at times.

Africa Sideways sure both a total of three tires before getting back to safety? I’m a complete zero experience person so I have no basis for pondering what seems to be a contradiction. I trust Paul’s experience; just didn’t compute for me.

It happens, not often, but it does. You get some snarly sharp rocks on remote roads. One time I had to do 150km on gravel on the spare before the safety of tar. Makes for a stressful drive. Another option is taking just a second tyre, and not the rim. If needed, can normally get help mounting second spare on rim. Less weight.
