i just take the blade off it's mounting and soak the blade in vinegar for awhile. did it with a 1808 spanish navy cutlass awhile back and it looked great.

it‘s the accid in the vinegar that works well against rust. but it’s realy important rins it of and whipe it dry afterward otherwise it will attack the steel witch causes more rust. also oil your blades frequently and especially after removing rust.

You need to use 0000 steel wool and wd40 everything you used promoted more rust growth. Salt and coke both cause major rust. So if done CORRECTLY they can remove rust but they also strip protective greases and oils away and cause major rust. Potatoes and baking soda, vinegar and baking soda (over night) coke over night will all work well but still need some scrubbing and oil after. Wd40 with 0000 steel wool is absolutely the best for rust removal

Cocacola is good for removing rust from modern steel, the type that has chrome and other metals, it works wonders on car wheels for example... but it's not good with normal steel (like what swords are made of). best I found for cleaning pocket knives was a mixture of vinegar and lemon juice, either of them would do the job, but te ombination works better.

Sand the blade with gruff sandpaper, then sand it afterwards again with fine sandpaper and then varnish the blade with a fine flaked silver paint. As second paint you choose matte clearcoat to cover and protect the silver paint.

You can sharpen it Sure But it isn’t full tang , so if it runs into something properly stiff , the blade may break or come out of the handle

We recommend sharpening only with our battle-ready blades if they have significant wear because they are full tang and designed for it, much like a kitchen knife. It's safer to sharpen a sharp blade than make a sharp edge on a display piece. Our dull katanas are not full tang which means slicing with them can damage your handle and blade.

Because rust is an oxide of iron, any acid, such as the acetic acid in vinegar, will work to remove rust. Essentially, the oxygen in the oxide transforms to water after reacting with the acid. A stronger acid will do a better job in this case. Muriatic acid, one that can be easily found at the hardware store, is really just concentrated HCl with too much impurities for lab use. It should do well to remove rust. Another potential rust removal method would be to use electrochemistry to destroy the rust. For this, you would want to submerge the blade in a solution mixed with a strong reducing agent, and then run current through it. Anyways, have fun!

It removes rust because the vinegar has acetic acid, also known as ethanoic acid. It is a mild organic qcid that reacts with rust which is basic in nature, causing a neutralisation reaction which removes the rust. You are welcome 🤓
