Ian Thorpe discussed this in a podcast with Brett Hawke. I think I’ll go with what he said as he knows a lot more on how to swim it.

That's very interesting. Regarding to age groups. What strategy do you recomend for a master (> 50 years old) to perform the 200 free?

So you said with the freestyle don't engage your kick right away in the 1st 50 , how does this work for breaststroke?

It's easy. Sprint the entire 200. Okay, maybe not the entire 200. Your first 50 should be wicked fast, sprint the next 2 50s, lose consciousness at 49.5 meters on the last 50. Your head ramming into wall at the finish will bring you back to consciousness. You'll look at the scoreboard 1:41.92. You go big time pro. BMW gives you are car and Omega gives you at watch. Good times.
