@@TrailReconPlease help, I need advice. I just bought a 2014 Willys 2 door that was driven in the North. There’s a lot of rust underneath. The stock shocks are even rusted. I have 7 days to return. Should I and avoid the headache? For reference, mind is worst than what you showed in your vid. It has 65k miles.

I've been following you for a long time now. As many have mentioned, having the whole family involved is amazing, and I have to say that I think a lot of your success is due to the closeness of your family. While I began watching for the wheeling and overlanding, I kept watching because of you've kept the whole family involved. You are a great role model for your viewers. Thank you!

The 0623 tag is the annual safety inspection in Hawaii! Awesome thing to see on there, especially a recent one. It was probably owned by someone in the military that got transferred back to the mainland! Might be a little surface rust but the wear and tear on parts is going to be pretty low with the low speeds on island! Nice find!

Forgot to mention if you wanted to keep the tag on the back of the Jeep they do make a bracket that bolts behind the license plate to get it up out of the way

You talked about covering the rear speaker when building a floor, if you remover the floor cover the speaker is set lower, when you cover the whole floor area, there is plenty of air around the speaker to keep it cool, and the sound comes in fine, that's how mine is so I can say covering it is not a problem. Nice rig.

Like the yellow Willys wrangler. I personally think many people are so focused on heavy loaded up unlimited 4 doors, they are missing out on the basic goodness of the lighter shorter two doors. More light weight, more nimble, overall less costly. I hope they 2 door wrangler continues to stick around. A base sport is pretty darn good. All it really needs is a limited slip rear differential and your good to go almost anywhere.

Not sure if it has been mentioned but the Sports versions did also come w the Dana 44 rear axle and mine had the limited slip unit also. Be aware that the limited slip clutches wear out pretty quickly and some believe this wear is what leads to chipped and broken pinion gears. I experienced that with my 2015.

I just went for the Apex AutoLynx on my 2dr JL. They're pricey, but an absolute breeze to use! Just a flick of a switch and they're connected or disconnected, so I find myself using them much more frequently than I would other options, especially to help with ride quality on washboard and bumpy roads. Would definitely recommend those if you are willing to stomach the cost.

A decent budget disconnect is a Rubi take off with an Evo manual knob. The down side is you have to climb under the vehicle. The positive is its just the one knob. I'm lazy. And this was the easiest option. Just took it off my Sport and it will be getting reinstalled on to my Willys as soon as it arrives. Wayalife has a video on it if it's any interest.

Hey fella's, great video. Just a reminder, that anything you add to this Jeep, you, tank of fuel, suspension upgrades, shocks, bigger tires etc. will all have to be deducted from the payload amount. I am guessing without even knowing what you will be doing, that you may end up with 400#'s or less for gear. When you, if you remove the rear seat, simplify the stereo, you will want to have it off when four-wheeling anyways, will give you some payload back. Of course the moment you add heavier bumpers, you're losing that window of flexibility. I am trying to plan a 2dr build myself, and it is bloody hard to get it right. Remember, you CANNOT increase payload, the payload from factory is it. If you add springs etc. you do not gain payload, you lose it as the net weight differential must be subtracted from the payload. Best of luck and nice Jeep there fella! Cheers, Mike from Canada.

All 08-18 JK's had a D44 in back. Only 07 had a D35. The difference is that Rubicons have the 32 spline version of the D44. The non-Rubis have a 30 spline D44. What I did with my '08 2dr is I put on 4dr tow package springs with 1" spacers, which results in about 2.5" or lift. And then some adjustable lower front control arms to get the caster angle set back. All in the lift was only the price of the 1" spacers and the control arms, as I found the springs for free. Oh, and I used shock extensions from teraflex.

Love it! Congrats on the new rig. The Willys trim is my favorite of the Wrangler/Gladiator platform because IMO they're the best mix of on-road convenience and off-road features. We loved our '09 2-Dr JK (just sold last year) and even though a base Sport model, we had 285/70R/17 Milestar Patagonia's with a small 2" lift and it was the perfect combo for daily driving. At ~32.7 x 11.2", it's just smaller than a 33" but doesn't require any modifications. So if upgrading the tires, I highly recommend going with that size on your Willys 2-dr. But regardless, I'm looking forward to the build and love seeing the whole family getting their rigs setup!

A small lift with some Falcon shocks (or similiar) that has longer droop in the same package or slightly longer would help with wheel travel. Going to a 33" sounds smart with that gear ratio. Without lockers he will be fine with a ton of things so long as he can flex out. Keeping the wheels on the ground is the first task.

Brad, I think your son's vision for the Wrangler is great and it is how I built my TJ with a modest lift and small tires. He wants to keep the streetability, Smart. He might definitely enjoy an AT tire better. I am running 33s on my 99 TJ which I think is the perfect size for the Wrangler to be able to drive it everyday and I can still tackle the trails. I am sure he will be happy with a mild soft lift and a set of 33s ATs. That should be perfect for him. A winch is a necessity so good suggestion. Doubt he will need the lockers, the limited slip should be fine for his light wheeling that he will do. You seem to be pushing him to build it where it doesn't seem like he wants to. Definitely help him upgrade the stereo components and maybe add a sub. Many Wranglers are built to the point of not being practical to drive every day. Your son sounds like he really has a vision and knows which way he wants to go with it. Let him follow his vision of what he wants without too much pressure to build. I seen a few 2 door Wrangler owners rip the passenger seat out to build a platform to sleep on. Interesting to see what he deicides. Then again, a tent and mattress pad is all you really need to overland. I love the channel, Navy Veteran here as well. Keep up the great videos, I wish I could get out there and wheel as much as you do.

Congrats, Devon on the Jeep. You will have a lot of fun with it. I recently moved back to the mainland from Hawaii 2 months ago. As a precaution, you might want to check under the carpet of the Jeep. Hawai, it's very common to have no top on, and it rain. Or people get in or put wet objects into it. I saw many people have rusted floor boards on their Jeep. Also just wanted to toss this out there, the Molley Panel Solutions overhead rack could be a great way to add some storage to your jeep. You could mount things to it to help with some space issues.

Another Yellow one in the family, and the birthday thing was pretty cool ... it was a sign! ... we got a JL for the wife, and we're going only 2.5" lift and 33's. 35's just look too big for me, for when she starts to get to the stage of flexing out... she's still learning. You guys are talking about seats?! Where do you go for that? (What brand) ours are really new and would be waaaay down the road ... but my (88) Cherokee really needs some help. Wondering if they would have anything for that. ... it'll be really cool if one day you all head out, and all these vehicles are together when most mods are done

Watch out for that limited slip in the rear diff. I’ve owned a 16 and 18 Willys wheelers, the the limited slip clutches wore out before 50,000 miles and caused the spider gears to chip and break. That was with moderate wheeling. Ended up going to Detroit true tracs and Yukon gears

Good times. Could try 285/75-17’s w/a 2.0 to 2.5” lift and rubi take off swaybar or antirock front for a mild but very capable 2-door.

Oh my a Jeep from Hawaii! I'll bet the cooling system is in serious need. Don't forget to add to "Coolant Flush" to your list of tasks. It is a known Jeep weak point and I'll bet the heater circuit has been neglected in Hawaii so perhaps consider a royal garden hose flush of that circuit using the house's 60psi. Then follow your serious moustached mechanic and only use H2O from Distilled water and the Jeep specific coolant (Orange OAT for my 2018 JKUR). OAT is one product I actually buy at the dealer, it is quite specific.

Im looking at purchasing a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 2023 but found the driver's seat/leg room too cramped & restricted after I test drove one this morning in the dealership. My leg was in awkward position. Too bad as ive been really wanting to own one. Im 6'1 btw.

I have to say I’ve been watching your videos for a few months now since I have had my Jeep and I am ecstatic. I really hope there are many more videos of this jeep and your son. I am also a young guy around his age with my first jeep. But it’s funny that I also got a yellow 2 door 2015 with Low mileage for a similar price. Mine is the Sahara so fairly similar and I have the exact same vision as him. So I’m along for the ride with y’all.

In regard to that 06 23 Tag.......my 1985 AE86 Corolla GTS had a parking sticker that said some university in Hawaii with that same emblem. I am having a hard time finding which university it would have been from.... Looks like they maybe consolidated their university system's logos to be more uniform. But I assume that's what that tag is!!!!

Love your Willys. I havea 2016 Bright White stock Willys Wrangler 2door came from Canada with 49k miles on it, so I have a bit of the rusty stuff too. I love it. Very nimble little jeep. Loads of stuff I wanna do when money permits. Would love a 2 inch lift and 33's. Only thing I did change out were my headlights to LED's and addeddooroff mirrors.

I have factory fenders that are not as bad if not almost new looking, I have a set of fuel wheels that I'm about to get rid of with a good offset that I bought when I did my 3.5 RK flex lift kit (definitely recommend with the bilstien 5100s or even better would be the 5160s with res... I also went to hydro assist (1000% recommend), but this also means I have the full PS take offs I have kept on hand for parts for anyone who ends up needing it... I do plan to upgrade my lift to a long arm RK lift soon, but I have a JKU 2015 Rubi, so I'm not sure if yall could use it or not? I'm just throwing it out there on parts if wanted/needed for free/dirt cheap.. idk if I'll want to sell or just give it to whoever might need it yet.. Y'all should name her "The Short Bus"!!!! That would be awesome.. lol.. but then again might be offensive to some? Idk.. im not a big KZbin icon, so I don't have to worry about ppls feelings and can do what I like and want to do. Let me know if anything I have listed interests, yall.. I do live in North TX, so if y'all did want anything, I could probably make a deal where y'all get the parts and just come wheel with me for a day. Or y'all help build my wifes offroad confidence in her overland build chevy colorado zr2... (I have 3 extra bed rooms with beds open for sleeping too so lodging would be really cheap, lol) Keep on doing what yall do.

I was in a similar situation. Got back from Korea and got a great deal on a 2006 Jeep wrangler TJU Rubicon. Transmission blew up after 3 months of ownership. Got it rebuilt then threw long arms and 35s and the Jeep hated it. I ruined that Jeep using it as a daily. So I bit the bullet and traded it in for a 2018 rubicon JL 2 door. I miss my 2006 LJ and I’ll own another one but this 2018 is just so amazing. 33’s, mopar Steele bumpers all the way around. Just threw a warm winch in it too. It’s crazy capable and I don’t need to worry about it leaving my stranded like my 2006 did on more than one occasion.

I love your sons new to him Jeep. I bought in May ‘21 a 2017 2dr Jk silver with about 35K miles on it. Originally it was for $25,500 but dealer brought the price down for me to $23,000 and I have manual windows and locks and I love it. I honesty do even miss power windows and locks lol. I upgraded to 33’s on my jeep and no lift yet, it will be a small lift lol. Well anyway Congrats to your son and best of luck and I cant wait to see what he does to his new baby.🎉
