Hi. For building finger rebound, I find it helps to try to do it on a non-reactive surface. A pillow, or rolled up coat, something that isn't going to do the work for you. Therefore any bounce produced, is by the fingers alone. Helps to build the muscles in the two secondary fingers, as these are naturally weaker than the other two and thumb.

Gotta Love that Muscle Memory..... I guess it works in Physical Training and Drumming !!! Rob, what Hi Hat cymbals do you typically play? I do agree with others here...You have a very good and unique training style that simplifies the Grooves.. Hey Rob, just wanted to thank you for your clear, direct and upbeat teaching style. I agree with some other comments that the slow motion video and the side angle really helped demonstrate the mechanics being used. This technique has been a game changer for me, and is improving other areas of playing including hand speed, a heightened sense of the nuances in my grip, and other things like the 4-stroke ruff.... There's so much bleed over in everything we practice in drumming, it's really empowering. So, again...THANK YOU!!!

Hey Rob - just switched 6 months ago and although I have not put in mega hours my speed on the pad is better now than match grip. Problem - I just got on the kit and my left hand is awkward on fills and I'm flicking my hi hats with my left when doing floating tom licks. Never had that problem with matched cuz sticks are straight going around... I pull the hats back, forward up and down, still clipping em'. Frustrated. Got a tip?

Great video. I'm wondering if it's valid to sort of combined techniques. So move the arm on 1 (the down beat) to hit the shank of the stick and bring up to bounce out the rest of the 16th notes controlled with the fingers? That's sort of what I do I think. I've never been able to sustain it but mostly because I don't practice it too much.

I recommend watching this in slow motion, because his elbow does not go forwards and backwards in a soaring motion - especially not at high-speed, and his thumb does not remain on the top side of the stick as instructed. But watching at slow speed gave me the inside I needed to learn how the motion can be achieved.

I think James Gadson (?) played drums on Donald Fagens album The Nightfly on the track Ruby Baby. He was playing fast triplets (sounds like he alternated using dotted, shuffle type notes) on the high hat. They were fast the way that you're describing. The beat he's playing, almost has a half time feel to it. Kind of a tricky beat to play. Requires some independence. Thought of this while watching your vid. Hope things are well with you.
