When I was in HS my dad was teaching me stone work so when the time came I could become a Mason like he was. There was a neighbor girl I really liked, so I went over and talked to her dad about letting me do some brick work for his patio and build a BBQ. All he had to do was buy the materials and I'd do the labor for practice. Summers in central Texas were hot, so much of my work was done in shorts and a muscle shirt. I took my time, got regular visits from the daughter with iced tea and sandwiches, we got to know each other really well. When I was almost done I got brave and asked her out, only to be turned down because she thought I was too old for her. After I explained we were both the same age, she came up with a different excuse, so I got the hint. A few days later I finished the work that I'd taken almost a month to do, the dad still gave my $50 (in 1976 money that was good), and I packed up my tools and left. Later that day the girl I had the crush on came over and wanted to explain why she didn't want to go out with me, but couldn't say in front of her dad. She was actually gay, and had not yet come out of the closet. I understood, and she said she'd make it up to me. Another few days later and I was invited over to her house when they used the BBQ I had built for the first time, and she had invited a half dozen of her girl friends over to meet me. I got my pick from 7 of the prettiest girls in school, and over the next couple of months had dates with 4 of them. I settled on one, we dated for 2 years until we both graduated.
