I don't really know if she really rejects her high class... In game (I think) she states when killing someone: "look out for the one percent". It kind of implies she still considers herself high class. I know it's not canon, because voice lines in the game apparently aren't, butething to consider.

It took me a bit to pick up on Ashe's albino characteristics, too. I think Blizzard may have wanted to incorporate that as part of her character, but at the same time wanted to retain the "Overwatch girl" aesthetic you talked about. The result is some kind of psuedo albinism that possesses some of the actual disorder's aspects, but shrugs off the visual characteristics which might come across as uncanny valley (such as having pale, undefined eyebrows). Overall it feels like somewhat of a missed opportunity to represent albinism, since it's something you don't see much video games.

There is a huge mistake when you interpreted her "cleanliness", that is it symbolizes her desire for "control" over her own life and her own social status. It looks like she doesn't hate the life of luxury and excessiveness, but she despites the idea that it's given to her, from the people whom doesn't care about her, nor does she cares about them. What she wants is "total control" of her own life. She gets what she wants, she does what she likes, just like a spoiled brat she was, and still is to this day. Or at least that how I see her design.

About the make-up. I think its in line with her clothing, her desing is saying something like "You can be an outlaw, but that doesnt mean that you cant be classy". Or at least thats what intention I see, she cares a lot of her looks, and it could be something that she inherited from her past. It even has some utility for her when she is "managing" her gang, just as buisness men and women dress up to meetings and try to give an image of "order". I like in someway (but idk if it was intentional from the designers) that the make up at first glance "doesnt make much sense", because well, its hard for people to reject some practices that they have been doing for years and years, just because. So it makes sense that the make-up doesnt make much sense in her character, because not everything on behalf of human behaviour is rational.

I think ashe can't really be "tall and fat" unless you change bob too, which wouldn't make that much sense, he's the big one, sort of her protector, her only protector, and he's the big strong one of the duo because he's the only constant in her life, as far as we know. I think she has to be rather short and thin in contrast to bob and actually seem like bob can protect her in any way, if she had a zarya body having a big, strong brute butler wouln't help her too much. you could still give her a different body type but I just don't think she would work as a "tall and fat" person, don't know if I'm making sense, I mean ana had an incredibly enhanced eye that wasn't noticable, why would the super rich woman have to use some weird apparatus?, also who knows, maybe she uses spray tan. pls don't take anything I say too seriously

I agree with you on this, and to me at least you're making sense lol. To add on to you're second paragraph, i'm not familiar with albinism, so I'm not sure how it works, but doesn't she live in Arizona? With that sun wouldn't she get really tanned? (Again, idk much so maybe albinism prevents tanning, but your spray tan idea works well too) We don't know if she does or doesn't, but but it would really make sense for someone like her (a person who's diplomatic, i.e settling gang wars, negotions, and the like) to need to be presentable yet dangerous, so she takes advantage of what good she has (white hair, red eyes, sharp features) and hiding the bad parts (ghostly skin, bad eyesight) basically all with money, suggesting she doesn't really reject the upperclass lifestyle. Maybe because she can't, maybe because she doesn't feel a need to and is rejecting something else. It really is something to be explored soon! (Last minute thought, isn't she a top class criminal, who steals lots of money? Why WOULDN'T she use some on herself with make up n stuff?)
@timothymclean6 жыл бұрын
1. Tall _or_ fat, or _something else._ 2. What's wrong with changing B.O.B.? Or leaving out the big, male-coded protector to the frail-looking woman? 3. Ashe doesn't look like she has spray-tan or a subtle visual apparatus. She looks like she has normal Caucasian skin and normal unaugmented eyes. There are endless ways that Blizzard _could_ have demonstrated either of those facts...but they didn't. Either Blizzard didn't intend any of that, or they were absolutely terrible at demonstrating it. The latter is probably worse.

About the makeup (and suit). I agree with what it symbolizes. But I kind of think it fits Ashe. She wanted, needed even, to break free. But now she's living her own life where she goes whole heartedly for her own version of that control. She straight out talks about "my gang, my rules" (or something close to it) in her own videos and a lot of her ingame voice lines echoes that sentiment. To me it seems that the further she has come from her old life, the more she resembles what she rebelled against. In her own way (and maybe only up until a certain point), but still.

I think the thing that gets me is that... Ashe, given her backstory, is a horrible person. It's not that she's 'playing criminal' to 'get back at daddy' she's playing criminal, as far as we can tell, because she likes hurting people and likes to profit directly at the expense of others? If she just wanted to get away from her up bringing she could have been literally anything, she had all the choices in the world. She chose crime. Like she grew up on westerns and decided it looked cool and wanted to do that. But because she doesn't actually care about not being a rich girl she keeps her butler, she keeps her high class clothes and make up. She plays at being a criminal the same way Bruce Wayne (In the Dark Knight anyway) played at being poor. They were never really in danger or ever desperate because they still had their vast wealth to fall back on. That's my read anyway (that and as mentioned the shallow and very convenient 'beauty standard' albinism, I'm very pale myself and dear god the amount of sun screen she would need to be slathering on)

For me, I think the reason Ashe looks a little too perfect is to send the message to her crew that "She's in the control." You know, to be a little intimidating because it's like "Oh right we can deal with all these stuff and still have time to maintain myself. Not even sweating," kinda stuff. Plus she's not going out there and will accept the lower class life or something, she still considered herself to be better than everyone but she just wants to earn it by herself so she rejected her family. Someone who really respect her for her real ability, not her title from her family.

"She's also a little bit unusual in that she's one of the few characters in Overwatch who really doesn't have to be there..." Couldn't agree more! Her elevation to hero status is nice in itself, I just find the execution & the character itself disappointing. :/ Also, her core motivation & goal of making a family is kinda ignored in most everything besides her origin story...never mind that she's already completed said goal xD. I like to think that BOB actually does care for Ashe (he's changed his life & even his body for her), but Ashe's interactions with him kinda damage that relationship to me :/. In the image from her origin story where she & 3 others form the Deadlock Gang, her skin tone seems almost white; I didn't notice how out of place that was until now! I really like the lenses idea, it could have made her character that bit more unnerving & "unattractive"...ah well. I've done a full review of "Reunion" on my channel; if you have time / interest I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Please don't feel obligated xD I'd just really appreciate the feedback is all - I'm aware you're likely a very busy man! Great work as ever, keep it up sir!

Hi Mr. Skyen. Been meaning to watch this one for a while. This is definitely a bit late to the conversation, but I did want to add something building upon your second read of Ashe, and that's her connection to the "found family" trope. At first glance, it's easy to say that Ashe isn't connected with any of Overwatch's core themes or ideas. This might be because of her nature as an "impromptu" hero. However, closer inspection (at least to me and some lore-hungry friends) suggested that Ashe's connection to Overwatch is her strange relationship with family. Family and familial ties are essential to the world of Overwatch. This includes both biological family (the Amaris, the Lindholms, the Oladeles, the Volskyas) and the families one makes (the Strike Team, Overwatch during the Golden Age, arguably Talon and their weird "co-workers as family" relationship). The thing is about Ashe, though, is it doesn't seem to me like she has the maturity or the experience to create a functional family unit. She wants to make a family of her own because her biological one didn't provide her with the love and support she needed, but it's due to a lack of that love and support that she can't really make a functional family... not like the family that the members of Overwatch made. This is really interesting when you compare her to McCree, who might as well have been in the same boat, but *he* was inducted into that Overwatch family upon joining Blackwatch. We know both Gabriel and Ana cared for him, and you can speculate that he and Fareeha had a big brother/little sister-type relationship. So imagine if you're Ashe, and the guy you started your family with (who you clearly cared about if the picture on her bike is any indication) ends up leaving you behind and gets the family experience you want but can't actually make. Then you can see this sort of tragedy behind Ashe--that she wants to make a family but, unless she learns and grows as a person, will never truly be able to make a functional or healthy one. I wonder if that's something she's figured out for herself already. Maybe she has and has realized she likes being a gang boss too much do to anything about it. So Ashe is tied to Overwatch's theme of "family" but is a pretty unique (and tragic) take on it. Could I be reading into it too hard? Maybe. But I do think that's more interesting than "rich girl." And, like you said, the text itself doesn't really make the distinction between the two more obvious takes of her character. So she's a cool opportunity to ask the viewer what they think, instead of defining her more rigidly. I do wish her character design was better, though. Love the outfit... hate the "skinny white woman" bit.

I feel like commenting on Ashe's supposed Albinism, and how it's lazy if she just has red eyes and white hair "just because" if she's not albino, is reaching quite a bit just to have something to criticise. While rare, it is also possible for a person to have platinum blonde hair that looks almost entirely white, and that could maybe be just what had happened to Ashe. As for the red eyes, Moira is also red eyed (Heterochromia, the other is blue), and Sombra's are more of a violet. In a world where that is possible, I wouldn't count out that having red eyes and nearly perfectly white hair (if not just plain White) as being impossible.

I've been waiting with interest to see your analysis, especially because I found Ashe's design pretty disappointing. As someone who finds character design one of the few strong points of Overwatch (invariable female body/face shape & Hammond should have been a monkey, notwithstanding), it was a shame to discover that Ashe suffered from a clear lack of originality. If I was told before her release that Blizzard were creating a cowgirl/outlaw character, her design is exactly what I would have thought of because it looks like most generic cowgirl/outlaw characters. I would have hoped that Blizzard would have taken this base design and really added an interesting Overwatch spin to it. What's worse is that I really like B.O.B.'s design and yet he has been relegated to an unplayable ultimate, when in reality he should have been his own character. He's a big, burly version of the 'zenyatta' styled humanoid omnic with an old school handlebar 'tasche, a fur-collared, sleeveless biker jacket, topped off with a tiny bowler hat. His whole design was so fun and different it was no wonder so many comments were about him after the animated shorts were released.I didn't find Ashe's backstory particularly original either. Ignored/lonely rich kid turned criminal was fairly predictable and didn't really surprise me. Similar to design, B.O.B.'s lore just stands out more, and although both characters work as a pair (similar to Junkrat & Roadhog), I wish B.O.B. had been used as a playable character. A quiet, loyal butler turned outlaw, bodyguard has the potential to be a really interesting character, especially as a robot moving from one to the other with little to no change in personality, just a desire to protect. I think this characterization would have worked well in contrast to Bastion's move from mindless drone to emotional 'personhood'. Ashe's whole design could have been a chance to elevate a generic character type with a unique spin but like a lot of Overwatch's game development in recent months it's all rather lacking.

Hearing this, I think it would have been interesting to havs a gameplay similar to what it was like in The Last Of Us when you were sneaking, vision blurred but you can tell where the voices are coming from. I think her makeup is very neat because even though she hated being a spoiled rich kid, she grew up in that world and learned how to look good when given the chance and considering she has BOB who does most of the physical work it seems pretty feasible for her to maintain certain level of tidiness for herself
@milkduds91486 жыл бұрын
I find Ashe and her story to be rather generic, honestly. It's not bad, but it also doesn't stick out. What I think they could've done, if they really want this concept of a high class outlaw, is to have her very clearly be a spoiled rich girl who simply romanticizes being an outlaw. She's just playing a game, wearing a costume, because at the end of the day, she doesn't actually deal with the dirty, gritty reality of outlaw life. Which is why she's so clean and well dressed, unlike someone like Junkrat. Though, if I were to design her to reflect that, I would've used her appearance from the mugshot with the running makeup. Something that looks rough but its clearly not natural; she's carefully styled this appearance instead of it occuring naturally.
@batmabel6 жыл бұрын
I think she's supposed to be all clean and pretty to show us that she's still just a spoiled kid and B.O.B is the one doing everything, hence his wear and tear like you mentioned. Although I agree that she would look super cool all dirty and with some "battle damage", that would hurt this image of being a rich girl who plays boss and have other people do her bidding for her, which is the point of the character IMO (I mean, she literally summons another character and screams for him to "do something").
@batmabel6 жыл бұрын
Also I don't think she's supposed to have albinism at all, they probably just went with the color scheme because it looks cool. If you look at the panel from Blizzcon showing the creative process behind her, she originally even had another skin color (which btw is a shame that they changed it), hair colors and so on and so forth. It's boring, like you said, but so is having the same body type as every other female character but two (Mei and Zarya) :P

It also fits her character, being arrogant and vain. And she never rejected being rich or spoiled, she rejected her family. To me, it makes perfect sense, that if you are brounght up in a very "clean" house and are used to wearing make up as a teenager, you will have that habbit later on too. Also, I can't see her being an albino with that skin tone. I think, white hair and red eyes were chosen to make her more "villian like" (see here: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WhiteHairBlackHeart). She would look to "nice" with blonde or brown hair.

Ashe is hardly the only character who doesn't have much of a connection to the rest of the universe. Mei was funded by Overwatch before getting frozen and that's about it; D.va's current occupation involves an omnic which is presumably related to the Omnic Crisis and that's about it; Hanzo is Genji's brother and that's about it; etc. Luckily, their connections are _just_ strong enough that they could plausibly get drawn into any sort of big event that ends up tangling the entire cast. 16:30: There are probably an endless variety of excuses to be made. It shows that she hasn't fully rejected her past, she needs to maintain an image to keep her position, she just likes feeling pretty, whatever. But we all know the _real_ reason is that makeup is sort of a default for female characters, like the slender hourglass figure, long hair, and generally looking beautiful. And that's a problem inherent to our culture.

Some people just like to wear makeup, no notion of power or privilage, just preference. I think ashe rejected her family not so much society, she was going to be pushed out to fend for herself, so she did so on her terms and took power for herself and stole from her family and made a new family with her gang. She chases the riches, she will want to keep up the regal look to match.

To me the fact that she IS so clean gives weight to the interpretation that she's just playing cops and robbers. she likes the idea of being a rootin tootin outlaw but doesn't want to get her hands dirty, instead letting her robot butler do it for her

another thing to add is that people born with albinism are also at higher risk for skin cancer and harsher sunburns as their skin is often lacking of the melanin to protect against uv rays. so having a supposedly albino character run around all day in the heat of the desert also doesnt match up at all.

I feel the make up is just to show her leadership of her gang. As for the red eyes white hair, it was just an aesthetic choice I feel.

What do you think of some people in the community drawing Ashe with age lines and crow’s feet. You mentioned she was supposed to be around 40? Do you think giving her age lines like Anna would have been a better design decision?

An issue I have with Ashe is that she looks far too young for her age. She's meant to be close to her 40s, but looks like she's in her 20s. I'd usually stay it's just the art style that makes her look younger, but McCree who is YOUNGER than her has pores and wrinkles to show his age. I find that really offputting

I love you TBSkyen, more than anyone, and I wanna marry you, but you *totally* missed the point with Ashe when you started talking about her use of makeup. The way I see it, Ashe is a rich girl who could never get used to being anything less than a millionaire. The criminal life she's living is purely an act of spoiled rebellion. She doesn't like getting her hands dirty at all, and that's why Bob is there. He does everything for her on demand, being that he's a robot designed to serve her no matter what. In game she fights and all, and she shoots her shiny gun, explodes dynamite... But everything happening in game is non canonical, so we don't even know if she's even capable of shooting a big gun like that. This whole scheme of her going out and doing crime is part of her fantasy of what a successful criminal life looks like. She didn't need to do any of this, she was already rich and had everything on a silver platter, literally delivered by a silver butler. She doesn't understand what motivates people from lower classes to commit crimes, she chose this life quite literally out of boredom. Her appearance DEFINITELY reflects this. She's clean, put together, and she's always wearing a full beat. She has painted nails and her gun is golden. This is all just for show.

Isn't it logical to assume that Hammond, due to his massive intelligence, has a coinciense and cannot be considered an animal anymore? I mean he can't speak due to his physiology but other than that he seems as "human" as Winston.

I didn't like her because I'm not so into Overwatch lore, so when I first saw her it was like. ''hmm ok, she's a thief, looks like a cowboy, mkay. Cool headshots, nice sharpshooter stuff wait is that a robot? where did this came from? what does the robot that punches people have to do with the girl that wants to keep away so she can shoot?'' Idk, I just don't like how her ultimate move is another person and does not have anything to do with the rest of her kit. Yes Bob can shoot but that's not enough.

One huge thing about her outfit: she evokes the Confederacy from the US Civil War. She looks like a general or officer. Part of that is because she IS the leader of a gang-not just any gang, but a conglomerate of gangs. She wants to be known as the one in authority, and the military look is part of that.

I don't think Ashe can be an albino, considering what I know of them. She shouldn't be able to stay out in the sun with that much skin exposed without getting horribly burnt from her lack of melanin. Then again, Zarya has pink hair.....
