Think I just got the last PM2 from Spyderco, they found it in the warehouse, got it in person in Golden. Looooooooovvvve it.
@geraldkoth654 Жыл бұрын
Got one. My edge was a mess, unequal bevel angles, lots of hills and valleys. It now has equal bevels at 14 degrees, down to 1 micron diamond stone, and stropped to hair topping. Sharpens with diamond as easy as 14C28N. I like the Manix 2, with a single exception. That screwball lock. I think they got the spring off a heavy duty diesel truck. Got some other springs on order. I would pay Spyderco $100 to put a lock back on mine. Want to thank Shawn for his work and sharing along the way with his development and tips on sharpening etc. I hope to soon have a black blade and will make some custom scales.

Man I remember years back when BBB was Big Brown Guy (not Bear) and his very first video that I watched was how to flick open some knives. It was mostly Cold Steel knives there. And I'd been following Shawn through the years. I just bought a 2nd PM2 15V and I am quite honored to own a couple of these fine specimens.

I love the thinking on this. Another approach I've been wondering about is to use geometry to make up for lacks in either wear resistance or toughness. What I mean is, what about using tough tool steels (3V, Cruwear, etc.) with thin stock and small edge angles to make slicey knives. And high wear resistance steels (15V, Maxamet, K390) with thick stock and large edge angles to make choppers? Goes against convention and I'm curious if they'd be any good.
@GerstBladeworks Жыл бұрын
Because choppers take way too much abuse and shock at the edge, they require a steel/heat treat that won't chip or snap under pounding blows. Even if the stock is thicker, the edge is where the cutting and abuse takes place. That being said, I think it would be really cool to see what they COULD offer in an experimental environment and then expand on that, hell.. maybe it is possible. We are finding out loads more about alloys nowadays than we ever have, it wouldn't be a stretch!
@S.R.Backwoods1 Жыл бұрын
@@GerstBladeworks I assume that’s why they often use 1095 or similar? Often wonder why so many survival type knives are made with a high carbon steel and have a Rockwell hardness of around 55-57. I think it has something to do with the strength of the blade but I’m not an expert.
@GerstBladeworks Жыл бұрын
@@S.R.Backwoods1 you are correct! Medium 50s on high carbon steels with a thick stock is exactly what you want for that kind of thing, it gives you hardness but not too much so that it will chip when chopping. 1095,1075,80CRV2, all of these steels excel at being turned into large bush clearing and hard use camp knives
@noelvandepoele60010 ай бұрын
Funny he says he has no idea how the sprint woukd be received and hopes people like it. Fast forward to now and looks like it was received very well, that heat treat was a game changer, out cutting maxamet, great edge stability, easy to sharpen and debur, tougher than 15v should be, not chippy, made the steel good in areas you.would not think. Wonder if he could do something similar to existing steels like k390 or rex 45 to make them better than they already are

Super hard tools steels are for tools not necessarily for knives as they tend to chip more & are also very hard to resharpen .

Spyderco is way to expensive in my opinion. I’m not paying more then $150 for any knife. 99% of these steels is gimmicks
