Great video, Splash Dash. I never minded Omochao except for one instance. In "Sonic & the Secret Rings" Party mode. After you finish a game, Omochao would verbally say "Do you wanna Quit?" while the text said "Do you want to play again?". So if you listen to Omochao, you would be lead astray. It was a bit of an annoyance to restart a game, when I wanted to quit, or to exit the game when I wanted to play again.

When it comes to Sonic for me nowadays, it usually feels like so many nuances and cool things were murdered because of Let’s Plays and the internet as a whole because they either only took things at face value or just needed another thing to joke about and milk it until it’s dry for another 10 years for the sake of being relevant. I like how Omochao is literally a character that can give you an easier time if you’re a young player struggling with the game, and not only that, in SA2 he doesn’t even halt your gameplay, he just tells you what’s up! I don’t hate Sonic ‘06 necessarily because of the game itself even if it’s very not perfect, I hate it because it gives Sonic a stigma and Sonic fans get progressively more insane whenever someone says something really dumb and not at all constructive about the franchise and making the stigma worse for people who only watch the games from a passing glance.

I found out recently that the voice of Omochao and Rouge is also the voice for Nancy Drew in a HUGE amount of Nancy Drew games. The ND games were super important to a lot of millennials as the series was quite good and was the 'first game I played' for a lot of people. Neat trivia.

Honestly, Omochao never annoyed me, even as a kid. Heck, I always found the little guy cute. As a kid, I had a bigger distaste for Big, given how much his stages in SA1 frustrated me and how they were required to finish the game. Even then, my dislike of Big has turned more into a "Meh, he's just there," attitude.

10:55 I mean to be fair, I'd argue the atentention Big the Cat is getting nowadays, from him being in Sonic Prime to (potentially even though it's basically a fact) in Frontiers, doesn't feel as much of a marketing social media tool as it feels more so like genuenly acknowledging Big the Cat as a character and his overal vibe. Not to mention the IDW comics as well. And I'm glad about that. Because I do love that vibe about him. I just recently beat Adventure 1 and made me see him in an entirely new way. I like Marine as well, but I think the reason why she gets flack is she is kind of a nuisance for a lot of Rush Adventure, being in over her head and ends up getting into trouble because of it up until the end when Sonic calls her out on it. And while she is kind of annoying for that, it wasn't enough to make me hate her. I also think it might be due to Rush Adventure being her sole appearance (outside of the Archie comics), so she hasn't been able to do anything that could improve people's opinion on her. Since I doubt SEGA has any interest in going to Blaze's dimension any time soon in the games, I'm at least hoping at some point she'll get to appear in the IDW Comics at some point. Maybe then she could make a better impression on some fans.

I’ve always thought Omochoa was cute. He only annoys me when he gets hit by my shots in the SA2 mech stages and then acts like I hurt him on purpose. Overall I’ve genuinely enjoyed all of the appearances he’s made, though I was also a bit put off that he replaced Cream in Team Rose in Team Sonic Racing, as awesome as playing a kart racer with little Chao drivers is.

I’ve always understood the Omochao hate, but I’ve always liked him as a character. I’ve always thought his design was cool and never really thought he was intrusive. Even in Heroes’ tutorial where he stops you every 4 feet was never really annoying to me since it was just once at the beginning of Team Rose’s story.

I think another reason for the hatred for Omochao is that they exist only as a tutorial character without personality. While some people may find Amy, Elise, or Marine annoying they at least have a character, and as bad as they may be it gives you something to think about. You can discuss why Elise in an inconsistent character who fails at her job, or why Marine the racoon exists only to get into danger, but there is some form of personality there that you can discuss or focus on. But with Omochao they don't have a personality or plot significance they they exist with only their annoying reputation and nothing to distract from it.

So when playing trough the levels I'd activate Omochao and try to keep him as long as possible by running to the next Omochao as fast as possible and chaining them.

I feel like the people who shit on Chris Thorndyke don't understand his characters. You have a 10-year-old boy who rarely gets to spend time with his parents and is always judged by his wealth. The people (in the show) see a kid who lives in a mansion, has a ton of toys, a personal butler who chauffeurs him in a limousine, and a maid who does the entire household by herself. But deep down he feels isolated and lonely. That is until an alien hedgehog with superpowers comes into his life and becomes his best friend along with the rest of the cast. You have to acknowledge how realistically his character is written in the show. I do understand the complaint that he takes up too much of the spotlight and I do believe the intention here was to have him as an audience viewpoint character which tends to pay off most of the time.

I think we can blame 4Kids' dubbing for at least some of the hate. Supposedly, the original/Japanese portrayal of Chris was done better. But I can't attest to that since I've only seen the Englished dub when I was a kid when it first started airing in the US. However, I can state that 4Kids _did_ remove/alter some of the more mature and emotional scenes of the show since they thought it was too much for kids to understand or handle. This could possibly impacted how characters like Christ were portrayed. Also, 4Kids (I think they were the only ones) used _way_ too many musical like sound affects throughout _every_ episode, like an aggressive violin piece whenever Sonic would attack something, or brass instruments being used whenever something wondrous was happening (like panning over an open landscape). It makes rewarching the dub unbearable for me. It's worse than sitcoms that use laugh tracks... okay, maybe not that bad, but it's a close thing.

Bruce had all of that too, but everyone still liked him. There's a difference between Chris Thorndyke and young Bruce Wayne as characters, similar background and concepts, different executions. Look, I'm normally a Chris Thorndyke apologist, but there was *one* episode of Sonic X that made all of Chris's past minor issues in the show blow up dramatically. It didn't help that the narrative blamed it on his parents being absent, despite the fact that not only were his parents living constantly stressful work lives that prevented them from seeing him as often as they liked, but whenever they catch a break, we've seen them break necks to see their son, and it's not as if the marriage has been on the rocks. It was the presumed ungratefulness that rubbed people the wrong way about Chris, and that episode solidified it, and I'm sure you know which episode I'm talking about. There was even an episode where Cream blasts Chris for it.

I love that Big got a redemption arc with the fanbase. What was once the single most hated character in the franchise became a fan favorite. I remember the days when EVERYONE hated this guy. He was the prime example people used when talking about bad Sonic characters. He was dumb, his gameplay from his debut game sucked ass, and he had little to no plot importance in the games he appeared. I think in recent years, people mellowed down and realized it's okay to have a character like Big, and they started appreciating him for who he is. Sure he's memed a lot, but I saw so many people genuinely love him in the Team Sonic Racing short, IDW comics, and the Prime teaser. Unfortunately, outside of the fanbase, you'll still hear people call Big the worst Sonic character regularly as if it's still 2005. Maybe someday the world will let the man fish in peace.

The funny thing about Charmy is prior to Heroes, the idea that people had for his personality varied. In the UK, he was more or less the same annoying character due to how he was depicted in the Fleetway comics which was him just older. In the Archie-verse, early on I should mention, he was depicted as the most mature of the group because of the way the English version of the Chaotix game book had described him as 'surprisingly mature for 16' so he was like the only level head in the group. It wasn't until near the end where they had to align him to how he acted in the games they rewrote him with the childlike mentality but they only had that happen by...giving him a brain injury. Mind you, he's still a teenager in the comics but in the games he's legit a child so....have what you will with that. But as far as Omachao....I don't hate him at all. I think he's cute and I do like the gimmick of being able to fuck with him in-game just because. I like little things like that. And for the longest time I thought Mona Marshell voiced him given he sounds a lot like Izzy from Digimon.

Princess Elise: Never really hated her. I thought she was kind of interesting. Her jumping off of Eggman's Eggmobile was pretty badass. (and in an alternate timeline were the game is great, is probably one of her most notable moments) Amy: Honestly, I did find her a bit annoying in the past - Sonic X probably didn't help in that regard - but she's grown on me now. Big the Cat: It's mostly his gameplay from Sonic Adventure. Outside of that, I think he's alright. Charmy Bee: I find his antics with the other members of the Chaotix pretty funny. Omochao: I like the little dude. Never really hated him, tbh.

Fun fact: Omochao actually has an origin in the Archie comics, or at least according to the fan wiki. Apparently he was once a normal chao, but turned into a robot after being heavily exposed to a roboticized uncle chuck, since a chao’s transformation is based on its surroundings. And I know the Archie comics aren’t canon, but maybe it could explain why omochao in the games exists?

Crash doesn't have a lot of characters though? Like, the main cast consists of just Crash, Coco, Crunch, and depending on the game Tawna. Everyone else is a straight up villain, that either gets redeemed or doubled down on the villainy. Mario has a lot of characters, but they rarely ever stick around past the game they were introduced. Mario always resets to the default of the Mario Bros, Peach, and Toad, so it always seems a lot less than it actually is. Neither is the case for Sonic. He has an absolutely massive cast for the games, and they're constantly reused so you can't forget about them. You can have Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, but that soon builds up to Amy, Rogue, Big, the Chaotix, Cream, Mighty & Ray, etc. Not to mention the amount of characters gets even BIGGER once you include spin-offs, comics and cartoons, and they have to be included because fans insist that they're just as important as the games. As a result the Sonic franchise has a roster bloat that would give the X-MEN a run for their money, with many of these characters either being redundant, annoying, pointless, or a combination of the three. It's fine to defend these characters, but don't pretend like this is anywhere remotely comparable to other franchises. It's a disingenuous strawman that hurts your point.

@@elmemearana Wario is FAR from useless. He quite comfortably sits in the niche of being the lazy, crass anti-hero, something no other Mario character can claim. Plus he has MULTIPLE spin-off franchises under his belt. At this point, Wario is no more a Mario character as much as Mario is a Donkey Kong character. He has very much carved his own path. Rosalina serves as an entire representative for the Galaxy. She has tons of gameplay gimmicks that are more than enough to keep her from being just a Peach recolor. And even then, she pretty much sticks to spin off titles, with the only exception being Super Mario 3D World as a secret character.

Mario has has loads of characters because the IP has been running for so long and encompasses dozens of genres. Mario games didn’t try to salvage mediocre to bad games by trumpeting the arrival of increasingly samey and irrelevant characters. Nor did Mario games lose focus of the titular star, when they wanted to give the spotlight to someone else they made proper spin-offs.

I think my hatred for Omochao was mostly spurred on by the community at the time, as I was young when all that was happening and I conformed my opinions with the popular ones. Nowadays, I question why they decided not to include Cream in TSR and instead use Omochao and 3 kids, but the little guy doesn't really bother me. Being able to abuse him in the games seemed like an inside joke anyway, considering you could destroy him and shoot him out of a gun.

Another contender I'd say is Marine from Sonic Rush Adventure. I don't think I've ever heard anyone speak positively of that character. The only reason she isn't more well known is because not a lot of people never played Rush Adventure or even know the exists.

I think Marine is overhated, but I get why people don’t like her. The writing of the Rush games had a nasty habit of being overly enamored with whatever new major character they introduced at the expense of the established cast, but unlike Blaze in the first game who was playable and had her own story that could actually make you care about her, Marine just kept barging into story scenes drawing attention to herself without actually adding anything important. Her being revealed to randomly have a completely unexplained superpower where nobody knows what it is and that is never elaborated on in any way was just another slap in the face. I really want better writers to give this character another shot. Don’t hide her powers until the very end, explain what they are and give them a purpose, preferably to the plot so she has a reason to be there. Maybe she can’t control them yet and Blaze can help her get a hang of it. Blaze can still act as a big sister to her, but allow Blaze to be herself doing it instead of forcing her to constantly mom this kid against her will only to have everyone give her the stink eye when she puts into words what the player has been thinking all along. Don’t have the other characters adjust their behavior to accommodate Marine, instead have her work hard to keep up with the heroes and prove herself useful, even if the heroes are occasionally annoyed by her antics. This character doesn’t require that many changes to work, just better writing.

I thought Omochao we’re like, a species or an army of robots cus of the fact that there are so many of him that just stand there until you interact with him in Sonic adventure 2. It would also be weird if Tails or Eggman made him, since he helps you regardless of who’s team you’re on. Whatever the case may be, I think he, and Big for that matter, are cute additions to the cast. It may just be me, but I tend to get attached to minor characters, like I like to do random side-quests rather than play the main game 😅

Big is a God. Omochao isn't as bad because you can beat him up in SA2. Charmy is a badass in the comics. Elise doesn't exist. And Manic is equally as bad as the rest of the cast in Sonic Underground. The only one moderately horrible is Chris Thorndike.

I only found his voice annoying in Adventure 2. I actually like the one he has in Generations though. Since we brought up Elise, how messed up is it that Silver gets to constantly show up again, but Elise hasn't even made a cameo in any recent games? I guess she has the whole kingdom thing to deal with, but if Knuckles can turn on ADT on Angel Island once in a while, there's no reason she can't show up again somewhere.
