My 2017 Pathfinder SL with the premium package is awesome and got it for $29,700. Way better deal than something comparable with the Ford explorer and it has more room than the explorer, better fuel economy, and towing capability than the explorers V6 engine. This guy is mistaken.

As a Nissan driver I can say in the 3+yrs I visited my dealer twice 1 upgrade my cvt 2 needed a new battery. Everyone and I mean everyone i know or met had taken their mostly new or used Ford vehicles multiple times.

Either you or me are having unusual experience. We bought a 2015, now has about 40k miles. We've had transmission replaced, liftgate arms replaced (and new ones are still not working correctly), passenger airbag sensor replaced, the side pillar on 2nd row is coming apart from interior body. And working with Nissan, I am not joking, they quote you 2 hours, 3 times in a row they quoting us 2 hours for various stuff (oil changes, lift gate arm replacement, etc) and each time it took 7+ hours before we could get the car back. They are HORRIBLE with communication. This was 2 different dealers. Also took a lot, and I mean A LOT of time and energy to convince them the violent shuddering of the car was an actual transmission problem. Then they took 2 weeks with ZERO communication (seriously, I kept a log of the events because they never called us, we had to keep calling them for updates). Not to mention, while waiting for parts they left our car outside their lot...meaning it was available to anyone to break into even though they had a fenced lot to leave it in. we have this documented too. Car is comfortable and good space for 3 kids in car seats, but we'll never buy another Nissan. Coming from our 2004 Subaru wagon, which after 200k+ miles has only had regular maintenance and radiator replacement (at 192k miles)...Nissan has been a nightmare.

Not sure where you got the cu. ft. of passenger volume from... I'm holding in my hands as I type brochures for the 2017 Explorer and the 2017 Pathfinder and I see 151.5 cu. ft of passenger volume for the Explorer and 154.9 cu. ft. for the Pathfinder... not 120. I will note however that these figures are for the Canadian models of both cars but they should be identical to what you are reviewing as we get US built models of both. I test drove these two recently... the second row in the Explorer seems better in terms of head space and hip space but it's not a huge difference at all and so when I saw what you noted, I had to double check.

I have a 2015 SL with all the options, I am extremely satisfied with the vehicle. I got to say the transmission to me is absolutely awesome as it feels more like an automatic. From what I hear they have upgraded it in 2015 so the previous models 2013 and 2014 had earlier version of the CVT. I totally understand how people get upset over that CVT having had a 2010 Nissan Altima SR with the same V6 with CVT as the Pathfinder was just ugly. My opinion on the whole thing, is because it was a new model in 2013 and some slight modifications in 2015 were not reviewed past that earlier version. CVT for the most part.

one point -- the fuel economy. You say its pretty much same, but do you realize that ford's numbers are from a 2.3 liter engine compared to 3.5 liter engine from pathfinder, which means towing capacity will also be 3000 lbs vs 6000 lbs. Almost everything goes in favor of pathfinder except cargo. Why do you still choose ford explorer? May be you just like it personally.

Thanks for this great video. I'm deciding between the two. I've had 2 Explorer Sports (20 years ago) and loved them. I now have a Nissan Rogue. I've driven the Pathfinder as a loaner when my Rogue was being serviced and I liked it, it drove like a tank. I need 5,000 towing capacity for the 3K travel trailer I'm purchasing in the spring. Everything I've read states the Pathfinder tows 5K lbs. Overall, I like the Explorers more. Now that I've seen your video, I'm more convinced. I also like they have the auto stow for the 3rd row seats. It doesn't look like Pathfinder seats stow all they way flat.

we have a 2013 pathfinder and a 2016 explorer, the pathfinder feels a lot more spacious because in the explorer i feel a little cramped and technically the pathfinder has more cargo space with the 3 rows up because it has that lift up part in the very back while that space in the explorer is used for the 3rd row seats. the pathfinder is a very reliable car if taken very good care of. anything not just cars are abused and beat out of its not going to last long.

Since this video was made, the new Ford Sync3 debuted with the 2016 Edge and migrated to the rest of the Ford lineup in 2017 (including the Explorer). It has received rave reviews from every review I've read. In fact, after seeing the comparisons between the original Sync and Sync 3, I wouldn't buy a used Ford prior to the 2016/17 model year.

I have a 2015 pathfinder. We go camping not swamp buggie mud bogging. I don't understand what you have against the pathfinder. It seams you are so negative. Even it your shootout against the Hyundai the pathfinder did better in the hills and you never gave it the credit it deserves. In my opinion a good test driver just gives the spects and leaves his opinion out of it. oh well that's how you decide to run your channel it's a free country

I pull a 12' tent trailer and a 14' boat behind that and the cvt transmission works very well. As a test I set the Cruze controll and aproching a hill the CVT does not have any trouble. They work really good

I like these videos, comparing vehicles, specially SUVs. Please consider Jeep Wrangler vs Toyota 4runner, those 2 are currently the last real SUVs with body on frame contruction, true off road machines. Or maybe the Jeep Grand Cherokee vs Land Rover Discovery for a review of luxury crossovers with off road capability.

I wouldn't compare the two cars. Pathfinder is way much better. At least it is more reliable and has better score in what really matters. It's almost better in every way, even using the numbers from the video above.

To be useful these comparisons need to provide professional reviews of the vehicle's driving dynamics, strengths and weaknesses. Does Sorrento’s gear affects its performance as much as the cvt does with pathfinder V6? Some say the V6 is stronger than cvt, so stuttering and shuddering cvt needs smaller 4 cylinder engine! Is that true to 2014 trims?

Hey Dave thanks for this in detail comparison between two big players in 3rd raw SUV, I am curious to know the safety features and crashes test for both of them as I noticed that Ford Explorer got poor results in passenger crash test. Actually I’m from Iraq and we (in Iraq) would prefer cars exported from the US as salvage or even clean titles more than ones especially built for Middle East. So hundred cars entering Iraq every day from the US, therefore I hope if you continued your comparison series , particularly for full size SUV suchlike Dodge Durango , Chevy traverse and a lot more. Nissan lies so much about their MPG. We had a 2016 rogue, new, suppose to get like 26/27 average. We got about 22/23. We traded it in for a 2015 pathfinder, on that we get about 18mpg average. Take whatever Nissan shows on paper and subtract 5 to 7 mpg from that number to be more realistic, which is a HUGE number to subtract, but that's the truth. Anyone have experience with Ford's claimed MPG numbers vs realistic?
