Experienced this first hand. We thought it was another neighbours for 3-4 years. We thought the owner was not feeding it as it ate everything. And while my cat didn't care for treats that would fall in the grass. This cat went looking for it. Just this November the cat was seen to be wounded and out in our garden. More than ever. We built a temporary box for it to sleep in. And he was there sleeping. Only our cat got upset. Anyway as much as we have tried to be kind and friendly it never came close to us. It would sneak/sleep inside of we left the garden door. As it stayed n our garden more than ever, it was obvious that it had no family. Unfortunately it started bleeding again. Had to capture it cunningly!!. *Left garden door open, put the food down while he could see. And someone hid behind a curtain with a scarf ready to close the door*. Finally we caught him indoors... Except he freaked out once the door closed. The 30min it took for RSPCA, felt like hours. We hoped he would get treated and released in the neighborhood and he'd like us still. But they said he was a feral with how vicious and lack of care. So he was to be given to a farm somewhere. All the best buddy. Still remember you.

I caught a feral cat by hand, still missing skin on my hand from the experience. She had a chicken bone stuck in her mouth and couldn't eat or drink. I got her fixed up, and even though it took a couple of months she is now exceedingly loving.

The cat in my profile picture was originally feral. I tamed her when I was 10 or 11 and she was a kitten. I'm 13 now. Her name is Luna and she is one of my best friends :-). Oh, and not to long ago I tamed another feral kitten, we named her Pipsqueak, she is a five or six month old kitten and is a tabby cat with a black striped back and a spotted belly and has greyish-sand fur and a little black nose. Pip also has taken a liking to me, my mom, and my dad

We have a bunch of ferals here. You could say they are strays by their actions but they never have owners. Basically, I've never seen cats that don't meow. My cat was a feral too... okay the mother was a feral but he's always free like a stray cat, a cowardly stray cat.

Tbh the more you understand cat behavior, the easier it is to tame a feral kitten. Avoid staring into their eyes or lower your head if they caught you looking, make cat noises, offer them fresh food, respect their privacy/personal space and in a few weeks they should be getting friendly. The feral I tamed almost 4 months ago still comes to me when I make cat noises to call her and she's now happily cohabiting with my bro's cats at his apartment. We made sure to test them all for fiv /felv before letting them play together, obviously.

My cat was a feral. He spent his whole life outside. It took me over a full YEAR to get him to finally come close to me. And he's got out a few times, but came back. He's so used to the outdoors. If you are so worried about invasive species killing off native species, stop having kids and stop eating animal protein. Humans are the biggest destroyer of native species around the world. We have eliminated wildlife to turn their habitat to grazing lands to the point that just 4% of mammalian life on the planet are wildlife, while 60% are livestock and 36% are humans. Even 70% of bird life on the planet are our poultry. Don't make cats into our scapegoat.

A few years ago, I went to a cat shelter about a month after my previous cat died of cancer. She was incredibly sweet and we didn't think that we'd after be able to find a cat as special as she was. However, when I went into the shelter and sat down on the floor to pet all the cats, one cat in particular took a liking to me and started hissing at all the other cats if they got too close. Needless to say, I refused to even think about adopting a different cat and got her. I found out as we were signing the adoption papers that she used to be feral, was caught, spayed and released, then managed to get caught again. They took her to the shelter and now she's my best friend of 3 years. She's super gentle with humans and never holds a grudge, but she has no patience for other animals. She absolutely hates her brother. Cats are weird. This is why I love them.

Can your friend put the cat and the litter box in the bathroom? Then keep both cat and litter box there for at least a few days to a week. Outside cats are frightened of large indoor places because the cat feels vulnerable in a large, strange place. He/she will feel more safe in a small room for at least the first week. Anyone adopting an outside cat should read "Flatbush Cats" on KZbin! Great information and tips!

Cats are terrible for the environment, they kill far more animals than are supposed to be killed and offset the entire ecosystem. They are an invasive species. Native animals, such as snakes, birds of prey, foxes, and wolves are the ones that are needed to kill vermin.

I kept seeing a cat in my backyard. Figured she must be a neighbor's pet roaming around. I finally got a close enough look and realized she was a bit too skinny. Put some food out for her and she came right to me, let me pet her. Started feeding her every day. She liked me but was afraid of my husband. Well, she has the TNR ear...so someone did get her spayed and then released her back into the rough LA jungle. Now, after a few months of feeding her, she will let my husband pet her, too. She comes into the house for visits and mostly lives in our backyard but once at night I saw her walking along on the sidewalk by our house and near the street!!! I'd like to bring her in where she is safe, yet I think she will lose it. Once when she was inside, I thought she had gone back out because I didn't see her anywhere. I closed the back door. BUT...she was still indoors! From another part of the house, she had heard me close the door and immediately started YOWLING in distress!!!! I opened the door and she was so freaked out she ran from room to room until she found the door again and ran out. Even after that incident, she is very attached to me, will follow me around when she is indoors, and can't get enough belly rubs. She is very skittish, always on the lookout for danger. Even when she sees me approach, she will run away and then come to me when I stop walking. Clearly, she had some rough experiences....Not sure what to do! I want to take her to the vet but am afraid she will never get over it if I put her in a cat carrier and take her there. Any thoughts?

She will do fine after the vet visit. Just warn him about her fears of men. Thank goodness she's spayed so that's one huge problem out of the way. People love kittens and then abandon them as they mature. My neighbor put his cat out for urinating on his bath room rug. He had been neutered and declawed. Guess who he lives with now and has for the last three years.

Oh! I have advice! Making the cat carrier seem like a safe space will help! For instance placing her food and water near it and putting it in a place where she is likely to find and come inside. Once she feels comfortable in her "cat home" then take her to the vet. She will probably freak but less than if she was stuck in an unknown box :3€ even though this was 9 months ago i hope I helped!

I know its been a year since your post. I would love to know how kitty did. But Yeah I say say she had a good reason to be afraid. Last time she came to get food, she was trapped, desexed and was scared. Regular carrier may not be answer if you haven't managed yet. May need a dog crate with food bowls and such inside. Keep sides covered to help keep calmer. Also use pheromones to help with calming. The vet can call in medication to a compounding pharmacy. Meds to make kitty sleepy that can be rubbed into the underside of it's ear. (That's how I give my cat her meds-- easier than pill method but does cost more. My cat has stomatitis so forcing tablet down her throat daily would be cruel. ) The vet may even be able to make the gel for your cat instead of calling in to the pharmacy. Just ask them, I had a young vet that wasn't aware the steroid could be made into transdermal gel. I found the info online and told her on the next visit. Also, ask your local rescue what are some if the things they do to help kitties stay calm when they tnr or take ferals into care. Good luck!

Socialized to humans is the main difference between feral and stray cats. A stray at some point was socialized to humans where a feral has never been socialized. A stray cat that has lost it's social skills is called a Reverted Feral and not all strays lose their social skills. Shouldn't smile when talking about stray and feral cats. Not a happy subject. They typically live a rough life and their life expectancy is much shorter than indoor cats.

We adopted three feral cats who had been trapped and neutered/spayed. The shelter didn’t want to keep them anymore because they were so mean. We brought them home and named them. The boy is Percy, one of the girls is Artemis, and the last one we named Hecate, but we called her Heca. The three of them were inside cats for about a week before the warmed up to us enough to come out from under the bed. Then we let them outside. And from there their progress has only really gone up. Hecate, we sadly lost, she LOVED being outside, and sometimes she’d go on adventures for two-three days. And then you’d be sitting outside and you’d here a meow off I. The distance and if you meowed back you’d here her meow go up and down because she was running down the hill towards your voice. But she went out in an adventure about a year ago and never returned. We still have Percy and Artemis though. Percy was always the biggest but he’s even bigger now. He’s 12 LBS. Artemis is our hunter, she catches lots of things, except she then drags stuff under the deck and lets it rot… but at least we don’t have mice in our house! Well… we did once… Percy also brought a bird in once. It was so weird, cause my brother let him in, and then a few minutes later I saw him walk into my room with something in his mouth. He had a bird, that was still alive. We got him away from the bird and we took it outside and he flew away and was just fine. But yeah, don’t know why this was something I had to write but I’ve don’t it now so hello person have a nice day! :)

If I am correct.. Feral cats live in groups and stray cats are independent. It's a "rough call". I was adopted by an old cat that I first thought was "Feral", but after feeding her and showing some "cat love" she became a member of my home. She was apparently an elderly neighbors cat that was "tossed out" by the family. Cats in that situation become very angry, confused and frightened. It was hard to determine at first if the cat was abandoned or Feral. My cat became my most loved pet, always looking at me and telling me ( with her eye contact ) thank you for giving me a better life. Unfortunately she was about 19 when she adopted me and I only had her for 4 years. The only consolation was that I gave her a quality life in her senior years. Her death was the most traumatic for me. She succumbed very bravely to kidney disease, stroke, and heart disease, combined by a shoulder injury ( from trying to jump ) and abcessed teeth.. She was diligent about using her litter box and died from heart failure after her last morning visit and purred every time I visited her, even the day before she passed... I will never forget her..

Ferals and strays can both live in a group, or mostly solo. The difference is that strays have had enough exposure to people to be tame and ferals are wild animals that can rarely be made "pets."

Cats are highly social animals that live in colonies. The size of cat colonies can vary greatly, from as little as two cats up to about 15 cats or more depending on the human care of colony. Within the cat colonies, feral cats are quite sociable, forming close friendships with other cats and collectively rearing their young. ; "Feral" means "(especially of an animal) in a wild state, especially after escape from captivity or domestication. "Stray" means a pet that has been dumped abandoned to live on streets an animal (such as a cat or dog) that is lost or has no home. : a person or thing that is separated from a group. "Free-Roaming" house pets which owners let roam using doogie doors or they just open door and let them out with cats it's usually at night

rodents eat grains, yes. does that turn their entire bodies into grains? no. if a dog eats a rabbit, sure it may get some half-digested plant matter soup with it, but not enough to even put a dent in the amount of meat it got off the rabbit. also wow these are old comments. i hope IRONMANAustralia isnt so hostile these days.

The lack of correct information in this video is her horrendous. Correct information can be found in so many sites on the Internet itself you guys ought to look it up. Also since cats are obligate carnivores having greens in their food doesn't make a great deal of sense. I can't imagine wanting to sponsor your site with misinformation.

Exactly. My cat got a bladder infection from the grain and corn in dry food. Now he eat partially cooked chicken and he's doing fine. I mean you don't see cats running around hunting kibble right? So you give your indoor cats wet can food or a raw/partially cook food diet

The idea is to make a food of plants that cats can digest and fortify it with all the nutrients that a cat needs. It's cheaper and it doesn't require extra animal sacrifice. Cats tend to do better on their natural diet, but it's usually not a big problem, especially if the owner is keeping everything in check.

Cube Earther You would force an organism that has evolved for millions of years to thrive on animal protein and animal fats, to change its diet to something to which it is extremely maladapted, just to satisfy your believe systems. Animals are food. Ask any predator. That includes lions, tigers and on the omnivore side, bears, humans and raccoons. Pray I will always have easy access to meat, you do not want to be around me when I am hungry, vegan.

statinskill I'm not a vegan nor do I feed my cats plants. I'm just tired of these idiots with an obvious unreasonable bias against vegans. They always strawman them, they posion the well, and worst of all, they think they are smart. *You would force an organism that has evolved for millions of years to thrive on animal protein and animal fats, to change it's diet to something to which it is extremely maladapted, just to satisfy your believe system* Oh boy. You know our technology is very advanced, right? Our technology has made possible what I described in my first reply. Some cats do just fine on these diets. If some of them don't, they will not keep feeding the cat that diet, they will obviously change it. It's so fucking hilarious how you are standing up for cats, but at the same time saying "animals are food". If you just don't give a shit about animals, why are you white knighting the cats? *Pray I will always have access to meat, you do not want to be around me when I'm hungry, vegan.* I guess this is supposed to be a joke? Hillarious and original. The funny thing is, if a vegan said something like this, it would be considered a death threat by pop community.

I recently joined up forces with a local SPCA TNR expert. In less than two months we took three females and a total of seven kittens and one male!!! I help by reporting daily intel on locations and conditions/numbers as it is near apartments and woods near the train station I go to every morning. 11 rescues. All fixed, cleaned, shots, any tics/fleas killed off by applying Advantix, and any injuries treated (luckily none so far). Hopefully adoption, then barn cat recruitment, and if neither they are re-released. Proud to help. We rescued six kittens last week, five frames!! Fortunately none will add to population.

I have a stray cat and a feral cat that comes to my apartment everyday at least once or twice. They are very friendly cats - both of them. I guessed that one was stray because she lets me touch her and pick her up and the other was feral because he wouldn't let me touch him. Now he lets me play with him a lot. He lets me rub his tummy and pet him. They are both inseparable. You can tell they love each other. If the weather gets really, really bad, I WILL let them in because I can't slam the door in their faces. I wouldn't be able to - it would hurt me to much to do that. The once feral is declawed and the other one still has her claws. I love them both sooooo much and it hurts me when they don't come certain days. I worry that something happened to them.

I found three kittens in my garage last week. Since I tend to keep my garage open a lot I assume they are from one of the many feral cats that are in my neighborhood. I initially left them but kept an eye on them and feed them in hopes that their mother would return which didn't happen. So I took them to the vet and decided to keep them. They are 4 months old and healthy female kittens. I love cats.

I adopted a feral cat about 10 years ago. Now shes my most affectionate cat, but she has very serious problems using the litter box. On the rare occasion that she does use the litterbox, she will scratch the sides of the litterbox for about 10 minutes. She wont even bury any of her poop, she scratches the walls and then leaves. This habbit is so bad that even her kittens now share her habbit of scratching the litterbox walls instead of burying anything. She also has a mysterious hatred for dogs. One time a large boxer (dog) was barking at her kittens. She calmly stood up, walked up tp the dog, slashed his face, and chased it back through his dog door. She then walked back to our appartment and continued nursing her kittens like nothing ever happened. Shes quite the mama bear! To this day she will meow incessantly if she hears kittens crying. If its coming from a video, she will try to bite the screen to "save" the kittens. Shes adorable.

I know that this is an old post but this is so interesting that I had to add to it.This is a great video and I have always loved cats. I have been owned by cats all of my life but had never known any feral until I adopted Sable( my first ever shelter pet). She had been part of a feral cat roundup of over 20 cats and kittens. She was 4month old when she arrived at the shelter and 6 months when I adopted her. As well as being scared and full of growls/hisses the thing that was most notable about this wonderful kitty was her inability to play or take an interest in things like milk. Wild kittens are too busy trying to survive to act like kittens born in a human environment. Even after I taught Sable how to play with toys, she would pounce on things with paws together like she would have done with insects, mice etc. in the wild, the way mother cat taught her. She later became my therapy pet and was a natural healer. I miss her still. RIP Sable

I like the TNR program. Up until recently feral cats in my area would be rounded up and ultimately killed if they weren't adoptable. Feral cats are independent and don't need any real human help. Some shelters are starting to relocate them to places like farms were they are wanted and are relatively cared for. Over time this will lessen both the inconvenience of stray cats, but also the impact of rare bird species being wiped out.

I've successfully domesticated 5 feral cats for my family as the townhouse complex I live in had a severe feral cat problem. Therefore I also had the site added to Toronto's TNR program. We've now only have 1 female that's having litters from the previous 7! Always spay or neuter your pets! But yes you can take a feral cat if young enough and completely domesticate them.

TNR is the only humane way to eliminate the feral cat population. Feral cats starve to death. People will feed the ferals then stop for whatever reason. The mother cats can't catch enough bugs/mice/birds, their milk dries up, the kittens starve. All TNR cats in my area have only the left ear tipped once desexed. Please support TNR efforts in your area. Thanks. To see ferals being released after being fixed you can watch my video.

No they are invasive species and should not be on the streets. They kill millions of birds and 30 species of birds have gone extinct. But to not disturb them to much:if you find a colony of feral cats you capture them and then have them spayed or neutered then return them back to there home. Kittens however should be homed instead of released. :)

I adopted 4 feral cats, discarded runts that were born late in the year, end of Sept. Momma cat had 3 other kittens that were clearly healthy and about 3-4 times the size of the 4 I got. I had observed her right after the birth with binoculars and there were 7 total and 4 were very tiny. Talk about inventive, masterful, determined and equipped with a different set of tools than a domestic. Not a day goes by that they don’t express their love and appreciation for being rescued. I put out dry food for one of the larger kittens she kept. I believe a larger animal got momma and his 2 siblings. As winter progressed the feral became more trustworthy and one morning I hear a meowing outside the hatch, it was 12 below zero that am. I live on a boat and had a jack Russell at the time. He had interacted with the larger feral on the dock quite a few times. The other kittens were taken to the house where wife lives. I’m retired navy, hence boat life. Anyway I opened the hatch and in the feral strutted....plopped down in front of the heater. Once warmed he hopped up into the dogs bed and cuddled with him. Rivers, his new name, still wanted the wild life but I did put a nice sized box up on the bridge, left the enclosure unzipped enough to get in and a huge bowl of dry. I rise early and turn on tv. I had already laid in a supply of canned food for him in case. When Rivers hear the tv go on, he came down as in BAM...HE LANDED ON GALLEY ROOF WHEN HE JUMPED FROM BRIDGE. I’d open the hatch....he’d meow, come in Rivers. Heater time, then a bowl of cat chow and a nap with Zoo the j Russell. Caught him with a snake later in the summer and that was it. He joined his siblings and he knew and they knew they were family. 10 years later we have cats that open every cabinet door, move things around to nap in the cabinet. Quite the joy

How to deal with feral cats? The same way we deal with every other living thing: with kindness compassion and love. Sometimes though, the most humane thing to do is to euthanize a feral cat. Feral tomcats are deadly to other males, whether they're feral or not.

Well that statement got me by surprise. Not all feral male cats are deadly to other males, there are actually feral cats outside my door that are really human friendly, though it's weird because they are feral. Oh wait, they are being fed by humans so humans signify food, that is why they are human friendly. And, free roaming cats around here come in contact with feral cats, but there was no death, huh? Male cats are SO deadly man.

Feral Tom cats can be caught, neutered and released. Once the testosterone is out of their systems, then they will stop the roaming and fighting and marking. They can become semi-tame barn cats or even tamed enough to be a friendly pet cat. Some cats are more naturally friendly than others and easier to tame down to be a pet. Female and male cats should be neutered.

I belong to a local TNR and I dealt with so many feral cats I could write a book on them. First, a feral cat will get used to a humane who feeds them daily but are always on guard. I currently have 5 feral cats living in the woods behind my house. It can get very cold in the winter so I built them a lean to with 2 tarps and place their shelter boxes and food dishes under this cover. This keep their food dry and snow free. I place straw on the ground under this lean to to provide insulation from the cold ground when they're eating. Each cat has their own big dish and each morning I give each cat a can of wet Friskies and a cup of dry cat food. Sometimes one cat will be eating in another cat's dish and I'm able to pick them up to guide them to their dish. I will say. I will never attempt to pick on of these creatures up.

I have a feral who gets afraid of people in the house but when you sit with her she is the sweetest kitty ever. When I found her I didn’t even know she was feral because she just walked up to me and sat next to me super chill. She let me pet her and at the time I was like 9 waiting for my parents outside of school from orchestra practice. I found out she has never had an owner because she used to run around in a box factory setting off alarms😂 she was taken in to get vaccinated and then they let her be outside and stay feral where I found her and she had a clip on her ear. So we adopted her because she liked the house. She once left for like a week when our other outdoor cat who always leaves for a good hour or two and comes back, he knows his way around the neighborhood. She left with him and he came back but she didn’t and I began to think she really wanted to be outside. She came back sitting at our front door meowing to come in like a week later.

I didn't actually 'adopt' a feral cat that showed up a few years ago; I noticed what he was doing to the rat population in the area and began putting out a little extra food for him now and then to help supplement his diet. He'd still hiss at me when I'd go to the barn for tools, so I'd give him a wide berth when I was out there, but he did his job, I did mine. After about two months of this uneasy alliance, I was working on something and felt him rubbing against my leg. He became one of the best cats we ever had, although he still didn't always like getting petted. At times he'd be hissing, others he'd be purring and snuggling against me. I named him "Smeagol" because of it. Was actually a little sad when he got chased off by a dog someone dumped on us because he never did come back. I'm a dog person, but he managed to weasel his way into my heart for the season that he was with us. He was definitely the absolute best mouser we've ever had.:)

Feral cat in my backyard. Took over a year for it to warm up to my mom and I. No other human can get within sight or it runs. Now she runs up to my mom and I when we are in the yard wanting scratches. Unfortunately we aren't going to see if she can stay in the house because dad's allergic and we have 2 dogs and they will not get along. However we did get a bunch of cat houses that are heated for her outside and we can tell on the cameras she loves them.

I do know. My friend and I tediously trained and tamed a feral male cat. He used to be very vicious.Took a year. After the year, we got him into a cage and fixed him. Finally the real training could begin to teach him that he didn't have to be so defensive anymore. He is now our beloved pet, neutered with shots, and bonded with our other cat who lost her sister. Feral cats are actually super smart. I'm guessing it's because they've really had to think to survive outside. I trained him to come, stay, and sit for treats. I'm working on hand shakes now.

Honestly the best cat I have out of 12 used to be a feral. It took over two years to gain his trust enough to even sit by him when he ate. One really cold winter day after feeding him, he decided he wanted in and followed me. Took about another year but he became a giant lap cat. Now if I am sitting he is in my lap. If I am sleeping he is right by me in bed. Basically he never leaves my side. We even go for walks together outside in the back yard with him on a leash (he hates the leash but I have to or he will kill the neighbors dog.) when the weather is warm.

It's a heartbreak. The woods near us are home to a few, which I feed and occasionally can get close to but not pick up. Just ignore them. They'll eat mice, bugs and worms. In the winter, sometimes there are several disappearances. Like the birds, just enjoy watching them. Winter litters usually become tender treats during the dead of winter.

I've had an encounter with a stray cat recently. About a few days ago, I was doing my laundry past 12 midnight. I went out to hang my laundry and to my surprise there was a stray cat at the front of our door. It was my first time to see a stray cat inside our condo. The cat attempted to go inside our room but i prevented it from entering bec we have 2 dogs in the house. So I continued walking to our veranda where I was going to hang the clothes, the cat kept following me. The cat kept circing my ankles repeatedly while I was walking and it also started scratching, and biting my legs. I had a hard time at that time because i was carrying heavy clothes and both my hands were full, I could not pet it. It also came to the point that some of my clothes fell to the floor and this time the cat was now after my ankles that is when i started to become nervous bec i am not sure if it is still playing with me or going to attack me. Then when i started to walk again that is when i felt the bite was a bit deep. There was no bleeding or anything but the bite was evident on my foot. So I went to the hospital to get my shots. I just want to ask what kind of behavior was the cat trying to show? I am not sure if it was being friendly or what but this is my first time to get bitten by a cat. I like cats and I used to live in a house with a cat but never ever had this encounter. Can someone please enlighten me? Thank you in advance.

.......ok..so I got both my cats from outdoors (one was wandering by my house in the winter and we brought him inside, and the other was roaming the subdivision and popped out from under my house's porch)...so I have no idea but they're both my pets now and they're super cute (like the vet was surprised they were so good looking).....but big question....that cat that was shown near the end...the tabby...is its tail shorter than long hair cats normally? (One of mine that was wild has a shorter tail....but its not a Bob...its like a 3/4 length...and he's huge)...I've bwen trying to find out what they are

fun fact, the TNR groups snip the tip of the ear when they are finished, left ear meaning they are people friendly, and right ear means not. I found this out after I adopted a cat from the local shelter with a snipped ear

There is a stray cat that comes to my house lots of times everyday and it’s so kind and I held it and pet it and the first time I met it which was 2 days ago, it saw me, came to me, and started rubbing it’s head against my leg and purring. It’s black and white so I name it Oreo (I know that’s a common name.

A feral cat is sometimes referred to as a "wild" cat. Many were born in the wild and have never known a human owner.1 They may act very scared of people since they've had little interaction with humans. They tend to hide during the day, roam at night, and may take off running if a person comes near. They can sometimes learn to approach one particular person who feeds and cares for them, but they'll stay skittish around most people.2 Since they've never been socialized, feral cats typically don't adapt to being indoor cats. A stray cat is also homeless and lives in the wild like a feral cat. These cats typically had a home at some point, so they can be a loving pet again with a little TLC and patience.4 Just how tame they are depends on their personality and when they were last around people. Some might come right up to you in the wild and want pets. Others might take a little time to trust you, especially if they haven't been around people since they were kittens. But they've all been socialized enough at some point that they can be loving pets again.
