What's the Difference Between Hand Tied and Machine Wefts?

In this video I explain the difference between Hand Tied, 'Genius' and Machine wefts.
Hi everyone!
I'm an extension stylist in San Diego California, and I made this video over Christmas time. I had just been so busy with tons of new clients, and I'd been using all kinds of different wefts, I thought explaining the difference would be a really neat addition to my channel.
The three types of wefts I use in my Habit Extension installs are:
Hand Tied wefts
'Genius' (seamless) wefts
Machine wefts
All of the hair is top quality human hair, so you can cut it, wash it, color it and style it. If you follow the instructions on my take home packet, your extension hair can last 6-9+ months.
Let's get into it!
HAND TIED wefts : Thinnest of the wefts. Great for fine delicate hair clients. Made by hand by artisans 1:12. It is the priciest of all wefts. You can cut carefully & use a dot of super glue to prevent shedding.
'GENIUS' wefts: Medium thick of the wefts. Great for thick, medium and dense haired clients. These could be described as a hybrid weft. It's got the best of both worlds: thicker than a hand tied but more flexible and thinner than machine. They are made on a machine with a thin flexy seam and glue to avoid shedding.
Many hair companies come up their their own clever names to describe a Hybrid weft. Some names you may see are: Genius, Hybrid, Seamless, Co-Z wefts. You can cut these no problem with shedding.
MACHINE wefts: Thickest of the wefts. Great for coarse, dense very thick hair. Least expensive. You can cut these no problem with shedding.

I used 6 hand tied wefts, and 6 genius pieces (cut) for an install I did on a very thick coarse haired Asian client, recently 5:29.
Whatever you desired outcome, the right type of weft really matters for natural looking extensions. Remember, the goal of a hair extension project is to have the extension hair seamlessly blend into your natural hair. By selecting the right type of wefts to install - and the right amount, the extension hair will lay flat to the head giving a gorgeous undetectable result.
I'm certified in the Habit Extension Method. I flew to Arizona in 2018 to train with Chrissy Rasmussen and her team of extension artists. I continue to fly there and their West Hollywood location to keep my extension & color skills sharp.

Hello Lisa! Congratulations on starting Hair School. You're going to love it. I have three videos in the works right now, and I will keep yours in mind for future video ideas. When you get out of hair school and are looking for work, remember to always rent a spot that has plenty of free easy parking for your guests. That way you run on time and they run on time. If you make parking difficult for your guest, they may arrive frustrated and frazzled and worst late. making everyone upset. Hello Donna! I'd love to answer your question accurately. I need more information. Do you mean hair density on your client or hair density of the wefts? I think you mean hair density of the wefts. @@DonnaShanks Thanks for the clarification. I understand now. You won't need to specify the density of wefts when ordering. You just need to figure out which weft will work best for your client. As a general rule: Hand Tied wefts are the thinnest and lay the flattest (generally great for thin caucasian hair). Next you have Genius weft, these are thicker and great for ethnicities of hair. Lastly, is machine wefts (great for all types of hair - except thin hair)these are the thickest, and easiest to blend with on coarse haired clients. These are general rules, and I'm happy to offer more help if you get stuck with a client and you're not sure how to order. My email is on my website - link in my YT banner. You can always call the hair company you are working with, they typically have a tech support number - I find when I call, I learn so much about the hair, and I can make a better informed decision for my artistry & for my client. Keep in mind, for hand tied extensions, and beaded row type extensions, you can mix combos of different wefts to get the look you are going for. But usually, I stick with the same density all the way thru the hair project. For example, most of my clients get 2 Rows of 8-12 wefts of hand tied hair. Thank you for your great question!

Do you feel like hand tied is less damaging ?

Great question Lindsey! It depends on if the client has fine hair or coarse hair. Fine hair people go with hand tied's, they're more gentle for their delicate hair. Coarse hair is so strong it can wear machine wefts no problem. I always so an in person consult so I can see my client's hair & determine the best route for her. Sometimes I even use a combo of 2 types of wefts depending on what the desired style is. Thanks for watching & have a great day!
