What a cool hobby you have. I became deeply interested in things radioactive as a young boy when the Cuban Missile Crisis happened and an office of the Civil Defense opened on my paper route. I read every brochure and pamphlet they produced. There was an effort to include nuclear physics in school curriculum and it was something that appealed to my logical brain. I still have some fascination with the subject and have visited the site in Arco, idaho. Amazing stuff.

As is usual for me, they released the 103 for sale less than a week after I'd already ordered the 102. I would have purchased the 103 to get the lower FWHM (tighter resolution) had it been available when I ordered the 102. The same happens to me when I buy camera lenses, etc. The newer, better, updated unit always comes out within a week of me taking the plunge on the predecessor. ;) But I will say that the 102 is an amazing device, especially for the price, the small size, and the battery life. The resolution of these devices is similar to what we see with larger scintillation detectors. Of course, it's nothing like what we get with chilled laboratory semiconductor detectors, but that's asking far too much. While I'm disappointed that I didn't know that the 103 was coming out so I could just wait a week and get it instead of the 102, the difference really is rather trivial for almost all purposes. The resolution of the 102 is actually excellent for what it is. They're truly incredible devices and well worth their prices. Thanks for your videos, Drew!

I assume that the Raysid has a larger CsI(Tl) scintillation crystal (based on the unit sizes) which will definitely benefit in data collection and thus can provide a faster result, but the 7% model is also more than twice the RadiaCode which has the ability for standalone operation. So I think there's a place for both devices in the market honestly, just a matter of preference and your budget. Definitely worth checking them both out and seeing what fits your needs.

I calibrate the detectors when I first get them and then when I'm going out on a trip or some big project...its usually more verifying the calibration with some sources. I usually use Am-241 (because its very easy to find), Cs-137 test disk and a Co-60 test disk. I have also used a thorium lens and some radium items before. The calibration sources should be chosen to give you energy levels at different points in the spectrum. I’m thinking about picking up the 103 for hobby stuff. I do metal detecting or “treasure hunting” as my kids call it now. I’d also like to have it as a backup for some type of BOB doomsday type event. Would this be the recommended one? I’m attempting to signify the differences, but from what I can tell, most of the versions don’t detect some form of radiation or another unless you jump to the 2k+ range and since this is “mainly” for metal detecting, I’d rather not spend that right now unless there is some good deal on something I can’t pass up and would be a great addition to the bag and hobby. Your input would be appreciated tremendously as I’d like to also teach my kids about radiation types and how they affect things, including us. Great videos, and hope all is well your way, bud.
@RadioactiveDrew7 ай бұрын
The Radiacode is a very sensitive detector and can identify radioisotopes, which is a pretty cool feature. It is limited to detecting gamma radiation but if you want a detector that can detect different types of radiation and is built a little tougher then I would look into getting a Ludlum Model 3 or a Model 1 with a 44-9 probe off of eBay. The Radiacode is going to be much more convenient to carry around with you and alerting you to increases in radiation levels. I did do a video showing these different radiation detectors in action.

All of the sources I handle aren’t as bad as they seem. Most you would have to be in close proximity to for a long time to see some type of negative effects.

Another great video! I want to get a radiacode device eventually, but I do have one question though. Can the device itself identify isotopes, or do you have to use the energy (KeV) it shows and identify the isotopes yourself?
@RadioactiveDrew Жыл бұрын
You can drag your finger over the gamma spectrum and see the different isotopes. So when you see a peak you can identify it. The app also has a radiation hardness graph that will pop up an estimated isotope based on what the detector is seeing. All of this is only in the Android app right now.

Good job explaining the 102 and 103. I’m experienced in the use of energy dispersive x-Ray spectroscopy in scanning electron microscopes, so these little marvels are quite amazing for what they can do. They’re a lot easier to carry around, as well. 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪

If it's only the speed at which isotopes are identified, is it worth it for amateur like me to pay that extra $50 for 103? I will only use it for fun and just few times a year.

Does the larger crystal of the 103 make it more sensitive at a given distance than the 102?

@@RadioactiveDrew there's this material that you may have heard of its called orgonite. It's also referred to as chi, prana, life force energy, zero-point energy and so on. It's the primordial energy aka the aether that all life comes from. This channel I'm going to post has some really strong set ups that use a frequency generator to increase its strength of the field of energy it produces. Other people are building what are called orgone cloud busters to clean the air. I haven't been around either of these but from what I'm seeing and what others are experiencing with them I believe it might be the key to be able to clear radiation from the air or create a field that the radiation might not be able to penetrate. This guy makes them with the frequency generator but he doesn't make cloud busters. @sasorgonitecreations

Can you make a video about how to use these. I bought the 102 after seeing you use it. Questions like why it reads higher cpm than a standard detector. Cool features it has and ect! Thanks for the vids. Love them.

CPM is never a calibrated reading. It is literally the number of counts that particular detector sees per minute. The bigger and more sensitive your detector is, the more counts you're going to see. Two different instruments will show different CPM because they have different detectors.
@RadioactiveDrew11 ай бұрын
@stargazer7644 that is totally correct. It’s a hard thing for most people to realize, that the detector size really dictates what the CPM is.

I scooped up a Radiacode 103 after watching some of these videos. I have an interest in this from a historical site perspective as well as from a mineral interest because of my lapidary hobby and some of my specimens are definitely phosphorescent under true mid wave and long wave UV lights. I’d be interested to know if they truly contain uranium or of its another element.

Same thing happened to me. I had the 102 on order when the 103 appeared on the site. That's typical for me. ;) The 102 is an amazing device, though. I like it so much I might get a 103, too, just to have not only a spare, but to get the slightly improved energy resolution. But I will say that for most people and most purposes, i doubt they'd notice much difference.

I have purchased both the 1/16 and 3/16 inch YESWelder Thoriated Tungsten (RED) electrodes, and can confirm that both were nicely radioactive at an easily detectable but safe level. So by far the cheapest (~ $10 - $12) option is to buy a 10 pack of 1/16 inch YESWelder RED 2% Thorium Tungsten "TIG electrodes". Take them out of the pack and bundle them side by side, and place the 5/8 wide bundle directly under your counters Geiger tube. This produces well over 100 CPM on my low cost GMC-300S counter, and several times that count on my new RadiaCode 103, and nicely triggers alarms on both units. The larger 3/16 TIG 2% Thoriated electrodes will give higher readings, but they are triple the cost, and for that money Amazon also offers the "United Nuclear Geiger Counter Test Card" which has a bit of natural radioactive ore power embedded in a blob of epoxy for a little over 30 bucks (or a little little less if you score a coupon). Also, If you go with the RED thorium tungsten TIG electrodes, be aware that some TIG electrodes advertised as thorium doped are FAKE and don't have any thorium content, and are therefore NOT radioactive (which is why I specifically mentioned my experience with YESWelder brand electrodes - but your mileage may vary ;-)

Looking forward to review of the 103G vs either 102 or 103! Lets be honest. 102 or 103 - like we say potato potato. Should I buy one I'd probably get 103 buy if there's great deal on 102 that'll be just as good. Have the impression it's like Apple in the old days. Sure top model had slightly faster processor but in real life nobody would notice. 103G on the other hand is interesting. If nothing else then for the crystal. Any idea which will last the longest? CsI is slightly hydroscopic while GAGG is not. That alone speaks for GAGG but other factors could speak against it - price at least - here's a huge difference. It's no big difference between 102 an 103 and since 103 is newer I'll take that over 102 at current prices. If nothing else then it'd be supported the longest since its newest.
