You hit the nail on the head with this one. Couple of years ago we found a aqua Charlet pontoon houseboat in a field. We got it at a good price and I have been working on it A couple of years. It’s a great little boat they don’t make them anymore but it is trailerable and we don’t have any dock fees every place we go someone has something nice to say about our boat. It’s a keeper! Lol

Good advice on the get your boat now -- while you can -- and work on it to make it the perfect 'pocket' cruiser for when you're financially able to play with it. I've had a LOT of boats, too. Almost all of them were too big to trailer, so I was stuck paying marina and drydock fees. That gets pretty expensive of a 50-foot schooner. Also, I've "aged out" to where sailing it is hard work for a 68 year old. But, I kept my little 26 foot Westerly Centaur in my barnyard to be fixed up and made into my version of the perfect "gunkhole" cruising sailboat. The marina and dock fees won't be so bad because I'm planning my trip to be anywhere and everywhere I can anchor out for free. (Very much like Brenton's current trip down the Mississippi River.) For me, there'll be a short time where I'll have both boats in the water, but the schooner will be for sale and ready to take prospective buyers out for 'sea trials.' Once it's gone, that money will greatly enhance my 'Cruising Kitty' and add a couple of years to the DelMarVa/Chesapeake Bay adventure. Also, for the short times that I'll need to be off the boat due to other matters, I'll be always on the lookout for people with their own docks and make some kind of arrangements with them to tie my boat in their backyard or leave it at anchor within sight of some other boater who'll watch out for it while I'm away. Right now, it's possible to get a "free" smaller sailboat at numerous Chesapeake Bay marinas. Maryland made it a lot easier for boats to be declared "abandoned" and easier for a new owner to title in their name. Check the boatyards and look for the "dead zone" boats, then go talk to the marina/boatyard manager and see if you can make a deal.

Trailer trawlers are the way to go for anyone thinking of overnighting and going long distance.....on a middle to low class budget. The big boats will be there and if you noticed, most stay tied up to the docks as the reality of ownership cost hits home. There will always be a minority of folks (like myself) who went the plans route and homebuilt their trailer trawler. Still a good many nice designs out there, led by Sam Devlin, Karl Stambaugh and his Redwing series of boats, Phil Bolger, Glen L and other players in that plans market. But it takes incredible commitment, space, time, materials and money to go that route.....how I know! LOL Had I been a touch smarter, I'd have bypassed doing the Microtrawler build and figured out a way to finance a Nimble Vagabond or Nomad back when Jerry Koch was building these wonderful trailer trawlers down in FL. My personal picks right now as to what I find desirable? Vagabond. Nomad. Ranger Tugs 21EC. Stambaugh Redwing 18 or 21. Devlin Dipper, Surf Scoter or Godzilla mini-tug.

I found one of the few Bruce Roberts Longboat 21 in the USA, lots of them in Australia. 33 HP Vetus/Mitsubishi engine with low hours. I'll start on the loop in the fall from Minneapolis.

I think you are right, sleep aboard boats are going away. Center console day boats are taking over along with small plastic 2 person boats. I got my 1971 Land N Sea for free off craigslist and now that I am using it, people all want to know about it and are suprised how versatile a trailerable houseboat is. I have a few vidoes on my channel if anyone wants to see what it looks like. Keep pontificating!

Lots of good points you make Brenton, especially with the decline of the middle class. And a greater divide between those who have and those who have not. Even in the RV World there are no companies anymore making small motorhomes at least in this country. Some are stepping up and making and continue to make small trailers. But yeah it seems the market is more about big. I'm not that familiar with the Boating industry, maybe some of them may wake up and realize there's a market for the smaller vessels? But maybe not maybe it's not cost-effective for them? I'm looking now for my little vessel, still learning about the different types and figuring where I want to go... Pontifications are good, I enjoy them too, thank you, well said.😊

Brenton, I agree with your assessment 100%, and although I am not as attuned to the boat scene as you are, I have been thinking exactly the same thing as you. As you know, I am a motorcycle guy, too, and I own several Harleys. None of them are worth anything, now, maybe 5-6K, tops. I will just keep them and enjoy playing with them, and wrenching on them. I am so grateful you found me a Nomad when you did, and I remember you saying it was a"a God thing", the timing, etc of that boat coming available how/where/when it did. I think I told you, I used SIX gallons of gas this last summer and spent 15 nights aboard, cruising out and anchoring, or beaching the boat on an island. I can't afford a big wooden cruiser like we had in the 70's, and now, I have neither the money, not the desire to do that. My dream boat is still a Ranger 27, but, I love my Nomad, and she is here to stay.

Agree 100%...Also the "old car" hobby. The average age of people at the old car shows in my area were born in the 50's. I was born in 62 and there are VERY few people with old cars at these shows that are younger than me. The younger Gen X and fwd people just dont care about old cars. I see this hobby also collapsing in the near future. I will never sell my old Jeep because I did not restore it as an investment. My son will end up with it. He loves the old Jeep because its mine (ours)...but no passion for old cars and I am not knocking him for that...times change.

I agree with most of what you stated Brenton. All you have to do is look around and see who’s doing the outdoor stuff it’s mostly older people, look at Sturgus motorcycle rally looks like an aarp convention. I love to deer hunt and in the last 20 years the number of active hunters has dwindled to half or less. The younger folks like the nightlife shopping and video games ect. That’s why there’s an exodus from the country to the city’s, City’s have what young people want. Ever read the book bowling alone? It explains how we no longer do things like we used too great book. I've had this same conversation a number of times over the last couple years myself. All the 'big-boy toys'; the hot-rods, the big motorcycles, airplanes, and definitely the bigger boats, will soon become a thing of the past. Not only are these younger generations more interested in staring at electronic screens, but they simply don't have the interest or the expendable cash to afford such luxuries. I believe that many of the yacht clubs will end up becoming nothing more than fancy trailer parks, that have boats for homes instead of trailers. Private airfields will become a thing of the past, as will country clubs. There's gonna be alot of industries going by the wayside.

Crazy how I bought a 16 foot cape craft center consul with a 50 hp Yamaha and it came with a trailer all brand new for like 6,500 and this was in Long Island where prices were not cheap even in 2002 when I moved there 22 years ago man lived in Long Island for two years. But my 2011 16 foot Hewescraft i just bought was so much more (granted they are much better boats)…you were right they’re not cheap boats but I think it’s worth every penny. I can’t wait to get out and use it. I know I use it a little bit last week, but really use it ❤

Forecasting boat values and trends is very difficult. Good points with the old folk retiring and less young folk to fill in....but I see lot's of interest still. We have Yt influencers keeping the dream alive. Also, boats can sit in a boat yard for a decade with someone paying yearly storage fees just for that dream....even to sit on it in the boatyard. It's a very slow market to drop back down. 2 boats I was considering in 2019 was the Beneteau 321 and Catalina 320....had a contract on the C320 for 45K. Logistics and time was a killer for the deal....2021 the same boat was 60K and sill is not budging. It'll take years to come down if it does at all.

@@brentonsriversidehermitage Yes, that's all I've been buying, trailerable sailboats. Buy, sail the heck out of them while I make them beautiful again.....and then sell. I was lucky enough to buy a Catalina 22 wing keel with trailer for 2k. When the boom came I decided to sell it for $7500. I like buying neglected boats, rehabbing and selling high because I know my work will be appreciated. When people spend high they tend to maintain the investment more.

Agree with most of what you said. Another problem is that many of todays owners do no maintenance at all. So an RV, Boat, etc, that is 10-20 yrs old, is trash. So not only are a lot of boats for sale, they are not cheap. You dont want a $500 boat. It will cost 20k to fix it. The 5 yr boats are too much. But trying to find that sweet spot, a ten yr boat with low hours AND that is not rotted out, for 1/4 to 1/2 new price is almost impossible. Its one thing to do a handful of maintenance and repair to get a mid age boat on the water. But who is gonna pay high prices AND have to replace a 5 yr old interior or floor that would have lasted 30yrs if boat was covered?

P.S. I am considering finding an old 25ft hull, stripping it. Do a floor, and then just set my 18ft camper on it which has a decent interior. Rig my 125 merc on it and away I go.

I think your right about availability; but, what about demand and qualified buyers. You’ve accumulated some cash so you can act quickly and you keep up with trends. Through experience you’ve you know when to buy and your potential profit margin. You have the ability to do a lot of the work and you know where to source the necessary materials. Lastly are the universes of buyers and sellers. Luckily with trailerable boats it is easier to marry the two. The Best Buy is when an owner slaps on a “For Sale” sign and not what is listed in the various rags. That is where tge “Sell” is. 🐐

I dream of doing the loop, but at this point, I'd need to win the lottery. LOL. I've researched so many boats, styles and makers. They all want crazy money. Buying used is an option, but there is so much that goes along with that too. My crack pipe dram has settled on a custom aluminum power cat made by ACI. it can putt along, looping on one engine, sipping fuel, or blast through rough seas at almost 40 knots. I grew up on the Chesapeake Bay in boats since before I can remember. I've always dreamed of going down through the Panama canal and up to Alaska. Recently I learned of the loop. I'd love to do that too. I'm about your age (49) and dream of retiring to a live-aboard life. As a boomer, I can say we're dying off, so a lot of boats are going to Market and getting to the point of saturation, which is great for anyone in the market looking to buy . My plans are to buy a large enough boat to be comfortable to live on so I can cut off all my ties living on the land in order to live on the water instead. And when I die, just leave me on the boat and set it on fire so I can have my Viking funeral. LOL

That's exciting. Roy's boats are awesome. I've thought the same about his Dianne's Rose...25 feet or so would be a great live aboard size. Great lakes: right now, because it's far enough in the future (spring) I can say I plan on bouncing down lake erie, then up lake Michigan and through the soo locks and home to lake Superior. If that ends up being a bad plan, I will have at least made it to the western entrance to the erie canal. I'd ride my scooter home ans fetch the truck and trailer. I really want to pull the barge up in front of my house in Ontonagon;)

In my part of the world ( Canada), boat owners are being forced to scrap their boats due to age. Aging out of the ability to get Insurance on boats, many boats are being taken to local landfills and bulldozered apart because the boats are sound yet no insurance no marina will allow the boat to stay without the insurance paperwork. So it maybe a dream to purchase that sound project boat...yet in the end the system wants it destroyed before it's natural life is over. There seems to be a bit of frost on the roof in the background, keep heading south Old Man Winter is looking for you.

I've often wondered about placing a small travel trailer or pickup camper on a flat bottomed, trailerable boat base in lieu of building a cabin. I suppose weight may be an issue. I know zilch about boats, how practical an alternative would this be?

Hi Brenton, I have a million questions lol But in your opinion what is a fair price on a 96 pontoon boat with trailer and 85 hp Yamaha engine. Don't know the length yet but hope it's at least 24'. Don't need much but a tiny stove and bed and dry. I can get it for $2500. Also what about the gulf and Mobile bay before the great lakes. Love the videos and your perspective. I am 65 in medium health and having a old timers crisis instead of mid life one. Thanks for any input you can provide cause I know your busy.

Howdy. We've heard of texting and driving, but what we have here is texting and driving a Shanty boat ;) lol. Qs: is the Yamaha a 2 or 4 stroke? I'm guessing 2 stroke (because I've never seen an 85 HP 4 stroke) in my opinion, 24 feet is bare minimum for shanty boat length if it's going to be a live aboard for any length of time. 28-30 best. Also, how big are the toons? Most are small and can't properly hold up a cabin. With all the worl that goes into building a GOOD shanty boat, I'd start with the beat platform possible. Spend more of you have to on this. And a 4 stroke. Tri toon is best. You can add a toon fairly easy. You can email me if you want. I love talking boats:)

Not criticizing, just to help you make better videos. 38, that's the number of times I counted in one go through of this video where you said "You Know". May I suggest that you take the time to get your thoughts down on paper "You Know" like a script, before you make the video! Other than that, I want to point out that the video points out where the market is and where it is going. However it doesn't really address some fundamental issues. Such as you rightly pointed out that the market is initially getting cheaper because of a lack of disposal options for older boats. You then stated your prediction that the new boat market is getting priced out of reach for most other than the wealthy. But shouldn't you also have touched on the fact that anyone buying a boat in this cheap market will ultimately also be faced with the same issue of how to dispose of said boat in the future ? Personally I plan to retire on a homemade houseboat, which I believe is where the used boat market is actually headed. In the same manner that the small house market has recenty boomed along with the Van dwellers and RVers etc... Affordable housing has gone for the time being and may not return until the market has crashed and when that happens well, the country will look very different very fast.

Nutshell: 9 out of 10 boats in existence currently are almost unsellable. The 10% that is will go up on value due to being what the future boaters are looking for. The new ones built will be expensive due to materials and labor. Go price out a new cdory foe example. Or a Hewescraft with a hardtop. You'll see what I mean. As people have less money to simply survive, they won't buy boats, unless they live on them as a lifestyle. Thank God for pontoon boats (they turn into shanty boats quite easy) ;) thanks for the feedback
