I agree with most of what you say, although my experience has turned out a little differently. In the mid 70's I was able to buy 5 acres in Nevada County for less than $10K. I then built my own house using cash flow from my job. It was pretty basic, but I never had a mortgage. As time went on I was able to add to it, but it is still considered "rustic". I had someone say to me once" if you have so much money, why don't you just knock it down and build something nicer"? My reply was, "I don't really have all that much money, but the reason I have what I do have is that I can be happy with what I have". I still feel that way in my old age.

I sold out of the South and took the money and purchased a home at the top end of the Great Lakes, best choice I ever did for a decade. Now I am of an age of retirement, those eight months of winter skiing were wonderful. Property valves rise in the South over the years in the North they really do not, in a few years one can never go back South, it is a one way bus ticket! So think do you want to cut and split wood for eight months a year just to not freeze to death, it gets hard in your older years. That is why property valves are so low in the North, no one wants to grow old and freeze for eight months of the year. ( I have some limited money so I do escape the winter, I am lucky)

You are so right my parents and I were living the dream in the Florida Keys early 60s middle 70s and all of a sudden everyone wanted to be there and more restrictions and taxes and cost of living. So I joined the USCG and got to stay there for 4 more years but they found an undeveloped peace of land in SC 103 acres for $25000. Homestead it with a old patched up mobile home and went back to the basics I moved up we got a old sawmill and cut our own lumber and improved the house and built barns and a shop grew bigger gardens we lived off the land it was so inexpensive and relaxing but we could see the changes not so much at first and then snowballing tax’s , power rates, gas, everything that we didn’t grow and preserve. Well my folks are gone now and my wife has gone to be with the Lord and the mass exodus of New Yorkers like rats from a flood are buying up the land for insane prices building half a million $ and more houses and demanding water lines and better roads and everything that goes along with people who are not used to living simple lives and inadvertently are destroying our way of life back when we knew our neighbors and would help each other to now they are afraid to open their doors like there still in the city. I’m 68 years old I’m going to get into high gear and get my Shanty built and let some yankee have this place that I loved that has become a burden. God Bless my friend you know we got to love every body but we don’t have to like them amen.

Gotta tell you Brenton, you have hit on things that are core to many of us. First, I grew up mainly in the Bay Area - 60's & 70's - moved South in '76 and would never go back. I had the first issues of Mother Earth News (yes, before it went nuts), and as I get into the retired life I find myself a little torn between my life long aspirations of acquisition and the need to divest myself of all of the "stuff" so that I don't burden the kids when I go. Further, you work all of these years and have so many projects and to-do's started, that now you have this driven urgency to complete. I thought that this was a time to relax. You struck a nerve, and I guess that my point is that it is real easy to join the rat race but that in itself is rarely satisfying. I doubt if in hindsight, that if I had run off to join a commune (some of which were near Grass Valley) I would be happier. One thing is absolutely true and speaks to your point, simplicity can be just as enjoyable as any other style of living. One last thing, I agree that our current world is increasingly volatile economically, socially, and politically, so all of the lifelong planning, worrying, anxiety, could all be for naught. I am an optimist, but I am also a realist which is one reason that I have been watching your channel and adding a few comments along the way. I am glad you are enjoying what you are doing, and am even a little bit envious. Keep it going Brenton!

Captain Brenton I think you just took me to Church. 😊 These pontifications are spot on imo and I couldn't agree with you more. Most folks live well beyond there means(fast food workers, janitors, doctors, lawyers, etc). It's more about paying yourself first before paying your bills(save 5-10% every paycheck). If you pay the man first and live off the rest, you will work into your 70's or beyond. I'm 45 and my wife and I are nurses. We work two days a week by choice at this time thank you Lord. I worked full time the last 13 years as a nurse until January of this year. Everytime I eat rice and beans it makes me smile to be off an extra day a week. 😂 Two things that aren't made everyday are time and money my friend. Exactly what I'm looking to do, hence my venturing up north to the midwest/ UP. I woke up many years ago, luckily. I feel blessed for that. Looking to purchase raw land or a big piece of land with a small camp. Even if it needs renovating, I can do that myself. Where I live now, 20 years ago it was so affordable, but not anymore. Here in the mountains of NC. Home prices here are astronomical. My little place has more than quadrupled in price in the last 5 years. Many people have bought second homes here too and turned them into airbnbs so there's no afordable rentals for the local folks. I don't mind winters either. I actually enjoy them, so I think it might be a perfect fit... We shall see, at the very least it will be fun to explore...
@brentonsriversidehermitage
@brentonsriversidehermitage 14 күн бұрын
Hi Dyan, I can give you some useful thoughts here, I think. The UP is a big area, and mode diverse than people would think about. Lake Superior is colder and less populated than the Lake Michigan side (except Marquette, which is the biggest small city in the UP at approx 25k. That's where NMU is. The Keweenaw is beautiful, but surprisingly, not much affordable land. The affordable land is in the middle of the UP, away from the Great Lakes. Small (dying or dead towns) and raw land like you're saying. The prices used to rock bottom giveaway 10 years ago, even 6 years ago, but like your area...folks from down south moved up for second homes and relocated to escape the madness. Prices have gone up... but it's relative to what people are used to. I still think it's one of the last best places in America. Northern Minnesota is nice, too, and some of it is affordable still.

Brenton since you have started this trip and you have spoke about this very subject before. Each town you went into or talked about, like Clinton Iowa and a few others you went too. After watching your videos I jump on Zillow and just for fun I search up houses for sale in those towns to see what’s there. Not knowing if the areas are good, just looking at the prices, and your right I saw fixer uppers for $35k, many more in the $70’s or low $100k. The monthly mortgage on a $80K with taxes is less than $650 a month. You could do that and still live on a $10 an hour job. Like you said for those struggling or “forced to live in a car or van”. They have options, if they really wanted too!

I've been homeless many times in the past. It's not easy. Having a place in the world to call one's own changes everything. This summer I plan on showing more of these little towns with modest empty houses. One thing I say is, if a person spends most of their time online, it hardly matters where they live. If they work online, even more so. I've net people who live in the middle of nowhere cheap because they spend most of their time online. When they leave, they lock it up and go roam. Thanks for giving these ideas some thought

I think the biggest issue with the guy or gal “living in their car” is they are not starving enough to fix their own lives. There are so many hand outs, not hand ups in California, that the car dweller has little motivation to improve themselves. There’s just to much free stuff given to those with no mandate to improve themselves. In California they get Free food, free medical, free phones, legal to camp or squat almost anywhere. No ones telling them to get a job or get out, they just keep feeding the problem and keeping the poor and oppressed down by giving them more free stuff or letting them break laws that the tax payer can’t.

The reason property taxes are high is that they are the only revenue source for local governments that have to pay for expensive services like police, fire/ems and schools. States collect sales and (in most cases) income taxes but have the same problem where they're on a relative shoestring to cover expensive basics like roads, public universities and utilities. Then the federal government collects massive income and other types of taxes, which they partly turn back to the states (with many strings attached) and frankly blow most of the rest. If we could balance out the tax system between federal, state and local, a lot of the other issues would largely sort themselves. But of course that's "the system" that you're talking about, so it's pretty likely to stay that way.

My grandparents bought a 20 acre farm in Massachusetts in the 1930’s for $6500. My grandmothers last property tax bill before she sold it in 2003 was $4500. If she had kept it for another 5 or 6 years she would have paid the equal amount in one year’s property tax as the original purchase price. Think about that next time you think you own your property

I live in WI renting currently and have been trying to find a peace of land in northern WI/UP to put up a tiny home but the current bills are holding us back.. I am tempted to have us just live on our 26ft sailboat or find a bus first and try and save up the cash for the land.

That's a great way to get over the hump. I've lived in some many vehicles buddy. Back when I actually made good money, I had like a 70% savings rate. I've heard it said: the difference between renting and owning is a down payment, and I think there's some truth to that, but bank loans are out of the pan into the fire. Buying land outright or owner finance is the way to go. In the UP, inland towns still have some amazing deals. Anywhere near water (like everywhere) not so much anymore.

@@brentonsriversidehermitage yeah loans have never been an option and I'd rather pay cash anyway because of the terms chaining you down for life. We just can't decide if we make the move now with our boys having two yrs left of HS.. and just have them do online or we just wait till they graduate. I don't feel they are learning much anyway. Feel they would learn more about real life while traveling. A peace of land for me would only be a place to regroup and relax. I drive truck and am always on the road but I long for the sailboat and if I had it my way we would be on there trying to catch up to you on the loop lol. I do know that I'd like to sail up there on Superior and would be awesome to buddy boat with you. Our boat is swing keel and we can raise and lower the mast on our own and wind is free. I feel it be the perfect platform.

Ok, let's see if Karen Tube lets me make this comment. The Midwest is full of value and, if you are a self-contented introvert, you could live a quiet, happy life there on the cheap. Problem is...I figure a lot more people are gonna have this same idea. Then, you have a never-ending stream of foreigners coming into the cuntry that are eventually going to settle in those areas (look at Dearborn, MI to see what I mean). Midwestern prices aren't gonna stay cheap forever. Best to keep a good thing a secret. Don't advertise.

@@brentonsriversidehermitage Human societies/nations seldom function well and the ones that do don't last long. I'm in the last year of the baby boomers and you are not far behind, brother. I loved Mother Earth News in the 70s. I still have a book around here I bought from them on how to make ethanol fuel. The way I look at things is there are really only 2 classes in the western world, the wealthy class and the working class. The working class encompasses everyone that is not wealthy including the poor and disabled that may not work. The wealthy are always the ones that end up with the power and they are doing it through economic insecurity. They have been brilliant in buying up the media to spread propaganda and divide us while buying the government, including the justices. Never forget that the police and military are the thug enforcement arms of the government, which are the wealthy class. It should be mandatory reading of "The People's History of The United States to get a reality education on how the US came to be and what it's really about.

Georgetown SC is one of the last few spots left not to developed. I hope there government officials do not sell out to the money of the investors from up North. I hope they deny building permits and rezoning requests. Send them back up North where they came from. Let them go back to there crowded cities and there crime ridden neighborhoods. My uneducated humble opinion is we are facing 1970's style inflation. Wave 2 has started, pain is incoming. Get small!! Stop buying things you don't need, to impress people you don't like, with money you don't have! Brenton's conclusions are sound. Get a skill, live simple, the best things in life are free. 😮 Call me naive cause I ain’t buying what you’re selling….lol I too used to read Mother Earth news as well as countryside and backwoods home I subscribed to all of them as well as many more. I enjoy your talks even more than your travels but I’d say you’re describing a problem that’s not nearly as bad as you imply imo. You see most people in this country are like yourself they have multiple houses as well as many toys such as boats and motorcycles.they may complain about high prices but they rarely change there habits to conserve money. The spending goes on and people are renting airbnbs flying too and fro and the bands still playing. Life is good in America….. That’s not too say we don’t have poor and homeless people we do, But most of that is due to addiction and or mental illness. Have you looked around? Even the poor ain’t poor anymore..I think you’re trying to fit today’s situation into a certain biblical prophecy that you believe in. That were about to enter a time of trouble like never witnessed before.You describe them and they as satanic? Who are they and them? Are you talking the Government?Taylor swift. Bitcoin? You always allude to stuff but never tell us how you really feel. You talk about loss of freedoms, regulations,and high prices and I agree there real. but you never lay out what you really believe and why,Oh you allude to it, you skirt the edges of it and you throw a few hints but you never lay it out so we can debate and dissect it. You have every right to believe whatever you want and who knows you may be correct so don’t hide your real beliefs. As a book I’m sure you love says let your little light shine, lol
