This video should be a prerequisite for people to watch before they're allowed to comment anything critical about a professional's striking capabilities 😆 Excellent conversation, gentlemen -- thank you both!

The idea that in 10 years MMA striking and transitions will be next level compared to today - considering that at the higher levels, like top 25 say, they're already really darn good! That's an exciting thought :D

I wish Luke had asked him about the jab more and coaches like Trevor Wittman. He has made a HUGE difference to a number of fighters striking games, purely through fundamental boxing concepts. Kamaru Usman did years and years with Henry Hooft doing kickboxing focused style of training and was always a very unremarkable striker, and then he goes to Wittman, who teaches him all about footwork, defence, use of the jab, cutting angles, counterpunching and his striking absolutely skyrocketed. Same with Gaethje, when Gaethje stopped brawling and fully focused on using his jab and always having his feet in the right position to counter, moving his head defensively, he improved massively. I think boxing is the art that most mma striking coaches know the least about, it’s Trevor Wittman’s bread and butter, and look at how amazing his fighters striking usually are. And it’s all built around the jab, which is quite under appreciated in sports like Muay Thai, which is usually the base most mma fighters are taught. Footwork and head movement is a huge part of mma striking. Boxing is built around those two things, where in Muay Thai they are two things which are not very important and not taught to a high level.

Horrible take about Muay Thai . Did you even watch the video?
@fochiqui

@@RomeosGinhis take is actually accurate though
@RomeosGin
@RomeosGin Жыл бұрын
@@fochiqui Every striking martial art pillar is footwork and head movement. The difference between them is the range. Just like Kirian said, ppl in mma don't throw elbows because of the prerequisite of close range, thus opening up "grappling range". To say muay thai does not utilize jab just says you dont even do martial arts.

Shouldn't you have the guys name in the title and not "elite striking coach"
@NotJosephMuscat
@NotJosephMuscat Жыл бұрын
I agree but I would assume the logic behind that would be that no one would recognize his name. Therefore to get more views/have a more relevant title, they would use that instead

7:50 obv this guy is a font of striking knowledge, but I mean, fuck no. This is expressly not true. Head outside double legs getting punished with guillotines or certain takedowns inviting the knee is a huge reason with ppl have switched to single leg shots or upper body / trip takedowns like the Dagestanis…

There are two dumb things in muay thai: 1. You get penalized by judges if you back up in a fight. This makes the footwork stale and fighters less good. 2. Stance switching is frowned upon. The philosophy that Fitzgibbons represents (master one stance before learning the other) is just dumb, because you only learn switch stance by doing it and it takes time. That's why absolutely you should learn it from the get go. The highest level of fighters are doing it in boxing (terence crawford) and in mma (cory sandhagen). The only reason it's not happening in muay thai is tradition and it will happen there too once the first one to do it sets the bar. The ability to strike from every position gives you so much more weapons and footwork.

@joez.9932 Жыл бұрын
This guy is very arrogant, I don’t recall all the names he mentioned, but they were mid tier at best. Boxing is much more difficult, because you have less known weapons, two hands???! A lot, you know what all of his guys announce their punches, when they kick they expose their head, they understand how to switch hands when kicking. More combos, less power, better balance…the best defense is a good offense, but you need endurance, do actual road work, get off those stupid treadmills/bicycles. In a boxing match, all decapitate any of his fighters.
