Can Gordon or any other high level black belt clarify statement at 11:30 regarding inside position from guard being good for mma. Wouldn’t outside position be generally far superior as a bottom position? Superior frames and the head is usually further away. K guard and DLR should be much safer than almost any other inside position other than butterfly with double under hooks (see burns vs chimaev). What am I missing here? Is aggressive entry to leg entanglement the key? I just don’t see many reliably safe ways to use inside position in that in between phase. Does high knee shield ->far arm drag-> half butterfly work well?
@docabj
@docabj 8 ай бұрын
I thought that was interesting as well. Leg attacks are always a sprint. Can I get a complete control position that allows a finish before I get punched three times (I’m guessing most stop attacking at three good knuckle sandwiches) in the face? One would think Outside ashi would be the best bet for an attack that keeps your piehole away from power punches BUT outside ashi is the entry with least sustainable control (by comparison to inside entries). People who don’t understand or drill leg lock defense tend to know just enough to pause/panic when an entry is starting. While they can generate more punching power across their body towards your face when you are in inside position, if you really know what you are doing and catch them legitimately by surprise, it’s probably true that Inside entries potentially offer the quickest route maximum control of the leg and thus fastest route to finish. Also, depending on the opponent’s experience a deep enough entry may put you closer to the opponent’s core making it harder for them to generate enough power to one-punch a leg locker into stopping their attack.
@peteypablo09
@peteypablo09 8 ай бұрын
Guards using outside positioning have superior frames for keeping people away in nogi, sure. But think about the upper body frames. If you're stuck in k guard and unable to off balance your opponent you can get punched hard while you're trying to do so. And we've seen many knockouts or game shifting strikes happen when someone is trying to play DLR. Now think of butterfly with inside ties. Or half butterfly with the far side arm drag grip or the shoulder crunch like Gordon likes to play. The opponent is tied up and can't punch you with any meaningful power. I think that's what he's talking about. Does that answer your question or did I misunderstand you?
@prandz420
@prandz420 8 ай бұрын
@@peteypablo09 I think you understand but I don’t know if I agree that K guard and DLR are bad. K guard has great frames and turns opponent away from you. DLR can obviously be pretty bad but if you are inverting for a deep DLR hook your head is pretty far away to be hit. DLR can also use a long frame with the free leg. Both are still worse than top position though obviously. I think you’re right about butterfly and half butterfly with good upper body grips and I think that’s probably what Gordon referred to. I have probably been dismissive of inside position for mma because shin to shin and seated guard is probably the worst thing you can do while outside position entries seemed safer (closed guard vs kneeling and DLR as entry to K when standing). I think burns briefly used inside position against chimaev I’ll have to rewatch that. Do you think high knee shield would be a good entry point to half butterfly? Also if unable to off balance in K guard could transition to X guard which is somewhat of an inside position. Thoughts on single X and X guard for mma? Single X seems a little safer due to foot on hip but not too sure.
