i'm mexican and lived in japan as a teen. i'm 5'1 and have a bigger frame (broad shoulders and wide ribcage). people would casually mention i wasn't as small as them, but would then brush it off by saying since i wasn't asian, it was expected of me. cue developing an eating disorder... my lowest was 42 kg and i looked awful compared to japanese girls with my height and weight. i think having a smaller frame really makes a difference in how emaciated one appears, but either way i don't think any of their standards are healthy or justifiable. a lot of people brush it off as "oh well since their naturally small..." like dude 90% of the girls i knew in high school were either anorexic or bulimic, it is crazy.

When I’m told to get fat because I don’t look attractive because I’m too skinny, I say 〝So what? Why do I have to look pretty? Why do I have to get fat for a guy who pays attention only to something on a woman’s chest but never do to anything inside her chest?〟. Very few Japanese people are like me. It’s scaring me and I finally went to the doctor for it today. At first clothes were fitting me better and it was great but now nothing fits bc if it fits my waist it’s not long enough and if it’s long enough it’s too big on waist. I buy new pants and they are too big within a month and it’s slowly leading me into insanity. I just want to wear clothes that fit 😭

Actually, the ideal weight is individual, based on your height, your bonemass, your bodytype and many more things. So people should really be more tolerant to eachother. Sometimes the cause might be diseases that runs in the family, and in those cases there is very little one can do other than trying to eat healthy and exercise regularly

Girl, you look good! You don't need to loose weight. Japan is mostly a homogeneous population. If 110 lbs is "fat" then the average American is beyond obese 😅.

I think height could be playing a role here. Some of it was excessive like 83lbs -90lbs, but yeah, I agree with the 123lbs. Technically, at 5ft I'm pushing it at 127lbs. Actually I think that's around where overweight starts. The doctor was being a bit generous when she said that. When you're so short, there's just no place to put the weight. I'm not Asian, but a lot of Asians are short like this. I'm not sure I'd want to be 90lbs, but I probably could be and remain healthy. I'd just be on the lower end of healthy for my height. Actually, I think my lowest potential healthy weight would be something like 97lbs. My weight is more now, but I used to naturally live in this lower range of healthy weight. You just can't be as heavy as others at this height. The doctors have been on me about weight since I was 160-170lbs at like 15 or 16. They've been telling me I'm morbidly obese probably since 180lbs. 110lbs probably would be a reasonable weight. Also, the average American is obese and some are beyond obese. Into the later obese classes. People looked very different size wise in previous decades. Some of the comparisons I've seen often bring up pictures of the public in the 70s.

When I came to the US from India when I was little and attended school in the US, I used to and still indirectly made fun of for being short, and I noticed that women were skinner than usual. I realize that everyone is different and people should not make fun of others if they are something that they are currently not. I know that people can change but people making fun of others does not give a good feeling and results in people feeling insecure about themselves. If you want to change yourself, please don’t do it for other people’s sakes. Do it for your own sake. You’ll feel much better than way. Always keep smiling! I think it's because they put on weight differently. I'm 5'2 and 130 but I have an hourglass figure. Japanese women don't usually gain in their butt/hips and breasts so much. Tends to go straight to their middle (many women have recatangle shape bodies). I agree that 130 is not bad though.

@hotteoki4498 also true for bone density. Apparently Asians have really thin bones, which is true for all the Asian people I've encountered irl. For me to be 60 lbs, I'd have to remove my skin, organs, muscles, and fat lol. At 200 lbs, my bones stand out visibly on certain parts of my body, like my wrists, ankles, hands, feet, and ribcage. So even if I was 100 lbs, my wrists will never be as thin as someone with small bones

I've always been a little heavier than my friends growing up which is far from the ideal skinny Chinese standard for women even though I'm short. Currently I weigh 61kg at 157cm and I hope to drop down to about 58kg but only cos I started play ultimate frisbee this year and feel it'd be easier on my body if I carried around less weight. (P.S. I already lost 1kg by improving my diet, yay!) I couldn't imagine myself going below 55kg cos my body wouldn't have the strength to do what it does to carry me through the day. On the other hand, I've had two housemates that fit the typical Chinese standard (probably weighing 50kg or less) and it was like looking at a piece of paper. They got tired of low intensity exercise before 20mins had passed (and this was walking, mind you) which I couldn't even fathom. My main point is to please take care of your body so it can be strong enough to do what it needs to do for you whether that be getting you through the day without feeling like you're about to feint, playing a team sport, etc. The scale is only a number and you know better than anyone else what your body needs.

5'2 and 105lb sounds about right... If you eat healthy and exercise such as jogging. That will be ur normal weight. And if you try to build some muscle then 110-115lb is possible. WIthout weight training, and just mainly eating healthy and doing light exercise you're within perfectly normal weight. In fact I think you're in perfect weight for your height. Just take a look at all the marathon runner and 5000meter race athletes. Their like 5 inches taller than u and weight same as u. Do you think they're unhealthy? They can run 3 miles in less than 15 minutes. Is that ANYWHERE near unhealthy to you for a body? I think not. Is just sad Americans are trying to make FAT ppl look healthy. that's all

I mean, so many things are in a range lol. Height plays a huge role, muscle mass too. Being 1.68 and weighting 55kg looks different when your body fat percentage is 30% to when it's 18% (i'd now, as I worked hard in the gym to get there lol. I look waaaay leaner despite being the same weight I was when I first started my fitness journey). And besides, there's a range, between skinny and fat there's thin, lean, and normal/average. I wonder if part of the reason why we find their answers so shocking is because height wasn't taken into consideration? the girls were probably thinking of themselves and quoting the lower weight of their healthy BMI scale, and most of them look shorter than the interviewer, so i'm not surprised that it shocked her. She looks tall so weighting 50kg or less would of course be extreme haha.
