As a black guy raised in Japan, I can say they are afraid of me unless I am smiling. Japanese generally look at someones mannerisms and face and decide whether to talk to someone. Its a country of introverts in general. 基本的に田舎に住んでいますが笑顔で対応すれば大丈夫😅

kinda along the same lines with you, being black and a woman I've been wanting to do a solo travel to Japan for a while now but I dislike being in uncomfortable situations like not knowing what people actually think.

As a black guy who goes to the gym, when I was trying to learn Japanese I found it difficult due to Japanese people were scared to interact with me at language events so it was very frustrating, I could never make friends with them as they would avoid me despite not looking scary at all to 99% of the world.

I don’t think is a matter of size; in general what scares me is racism and discrimination. probably if you are a tourist it will be fine but if you live and work in a different country, soon or later you could have integration problems…

I personally believe is not the size that scares any Japanese when encountering foreigners. It can be the aggressive overtones in a foreigner language and body language. I remember I was having an conversation with some individuals who are from my parents home country and my mother was paying attention to my conversation, later on she informed me that I was being way too aggressive and need to scale down my tone of interaction. Americans are blount & direct on how we communicate with one another and in a country like Japan it can viewed as aggressive and rude.

During the years preparing for the 2020 Olympics, there was quite a concern by some in the West that foreigners may act out of control in bad behavior, as seen in previous Olympic events in their respective countries. Covid changed that though, but in the coming years after 2020, especially since Japanese anime & manga blew up in popularity, Japan itself became a popular place to visit. I've heard of the various issues from Tourism this past year, lot of problems. Even to the point it has led to harassment or vandalism in Japan. Overall the reputation or foreigners in Japan has gotten pretty bad, and it discourages some of us from even going as we don't want to seen as part of the problem. On a personal thought, the Japan I wanted to see was in the first half of the Heisei Era, 20 or 30 years ago. I don't believe in reincarnation, but maybe after I die, my wandering spirit may be lucky enough to drift back in to past.

I'm pretty bothered by their small size cause I am big and bald and bearded and I know they are uncomfortable. I usually avoid eye contact and try to walk fast to get in front of them so that they don't feel scared I am walking behind them. In most countries a woman will navigate in a way that there is no man behind them, but the Japanese don't notice until it's too late. This sucks in a country where you can't just cross the street to avoid walking behind them., because in japan you need to use crosswalks, but it's cool cause I am only a visitor. One thing that sucks is that the Japanese can't look at you and identify your subculture. If they could they would have a guideline as to your values. They can't tell the difference between a cholo, a biker and a gypsy, if they could it would help a lot. Punk rockers are some of the most gentle people but they don't look it. Oh well.

Let me just say this. I am 6 foot 5 inches (roughly 195 cm). I am built like a shit brick house. To most Japanese people, I am the very model of a modern day gaijin. I speak Japanese, but this scares most Japanese. My Northeastern US mannerisms would frighten most Japanese. Nonetheless, I married into a Japanese family. My wife and Japanese family accept me for who I am. So really, who cares? Most Japanese will be scared of you if you are huge, but there are plenty of Japanese people that might find you cool.

I am curious how Japanese people view mental illness? I have ptsd & can't express my emotions well or always show them ony face. It tevds to make people uneasy here where i live in America.

Depends on the person but mental illnesses is often seen as a personal failing from what I've heard. Japanese men are usually pretty stoic and express little emotion but women smile a lot. Not sure if that helps.

I hear several times through these Japanese interviews how drunk and loud foreigners are which makes me wonder which foreigners? Here in the U.S. you might witness this near collage campus near spring break or sports night in a sports bar district but the camera would be hard press to record this on a regular basis. Maybe Japan effects people differently?

What is your definition of a “foreigner” ?! And is Foreign 7 billion people? Are asians foreigners? What about kikokusei? Or the horrible term “Hafu”? The mere term “foreigner” is discriminatory as everyone is an individual you cannot make sweeping generalisations about billions of people
@Ripcraze
@Ripcraze 5 ай бұрын
Foreigner is not a discriminatory word, stop being so beta, it simply means a person not born in the country they are in. Its the same for every country in the world. You are not born in every country in the world by law, you are a foreigner in every country you visit or stay in that is not the country you were born in.
