This is a very disturbing story, and when I told my husband too, he was appalled. Looking back, I probably was lucky to escape with my life. I went on a date with a guy, when I was in college. When he was in the bathroom, I happened to notice his bedroom door was ajar, and I couldn't help but take a glance inside. All over his room, on every surface, there were decapitated doll heads and strange severed doll paraphernalia. Less to say, I left shortly after. I think back to that day, and it still kind of bothers me.

Not the worst I've seen, but my parents and I started to empty my late grandma's flat recently. She was a bit of a hoarder, but very neat and organized, so nothing dirty or gross there, but we did find some funny stuff, including : - a plastic bag with a hole in it, where she had circled the hole and written "hole" next to it - about twenty pairs of old glasses - someone's baby teeth (whose ? no idea) - strands of my dad and aunt's hair from when they were kids - a mummified and flattened frog, kept in a box of old papers

I used to work at a prison. Guy named Comoiux (dunno how to spell it) who was known state wide for an escape he did where he had a gun hidden in a wheelchair during a medical chain run. He refused to clean. Absolutely refused. The guy had a layer of film over everything in his cell. He'd also constantly claim people sexually assaulted him despite purposely having a cell so filthy people would instantly throw up if they entered it. Heck, halfway across the pod even hardened corrections staff would gag after the cell's bean slot was opened. Sometimes he'd go on medical chain and the count room would cruelly put other inmates into the cell. We'd give those inmates enough chemicals to clean a pod, and even gave cell fires a pass. Anything to clean it. Even the most racist, inmate hating scumbag corrupt pig would get upset on their behalf.

I was walking home from school once (elementary school at the time) and I saw someone changing their little kid, in the middle of the street, in broad daylight Not changing diapers, changing clothes I saw that, and immediately walked an alternate route It also happened earlier this summer but outside my house (neighbours kids taught swimming). The mother seemed annoyed as I came home from work and parked in front of my house. Excuse me lady, this isn't your street, don't be flashing kids around here

My dad was always a bit of a slob, but I never noticed it as a child because my mom kept the house pretty tidy and I liked helping her do it. That was up until the divorce. It wasn't until my dad started living by himself did I finally notice that he was a slob. Well, one day during one of my court appointed visits, I went to my grandparent's house and saw my dad living in the spare room in their basement. I went down there and crushed "something" under my foot as soon as I walked into the room down there. The room was so filthy and recked that I never knew what it was. But my dad seemed to know, he flipped out on me and my brother for going into his room without telling him first. I'm sorry, but when you're a child and your grandpa tells you to go get him something out of the bedroom in the basement AND hands you a spare key to get into said room, you go do what your grandpa told you to do. Anyway, it's been a long time since then and he is still a damn slob and has never cleaned up his damn act. Last time I saw his room, I thought I had walked into a house from the show "Hoarders" or something similar. It was freaking disgusting.

There is a fine line between saving stuff that can be reused (not trash), breaking down products into 3 different types of piles (trash, recyclables, and valuables/useful materials to fix other things that will end up going into a specific location that works for the specific materials but never have a mega surplus of anything. We resell a ton of our older stuff online to make extra money instead of just throwing away our old junk.), and making sure to regularly clean up any clutter because I’ve seen how bad it can be since we helped clean out my grandmother/great grandmothers house after they both passed away within 1.5 years of each other. The entire 5 bedroom house was filled from floor to ceiling in every bedroom, the hallways, all the bathrooms except one, the dining room was completely filled up with junk, majority of the living room minus a small spot between the tv and my grandmothers chair along with a narrow path to go to the kitchen/bathroom/front door, and we had to physically break the garage door off because neither door could open up due to being completely crammed full and when they forced the doors shut the room shifted some how to block both doors from being opened. It took my mom, her 6 other sisters, and the 14 cousins (us grandkids that came for our grandmothers funeral) nearly 2 weeks of 10-14 hour days to clean up the trash so the family could sell the house because nobody lived in that state for many years.

When I was about 8 years old I lived in a house that looked straight out of a horror movie, we had an unknown infestation of rats in our basement. Nobody ever went down there since the landlord we were renting from said it was off limits. One day our fire alarm went off for no reason and wouldn't shut up, so we called the fire department to verify all was good. They went into the basement and found mountains of dead rats scattered around everywhere and there were even some that were still alive. This explains why we would see a rat in the house like maybe once a week. And on top of this, my mother's room had a beehive in it, and she just let it chill there and ignored it. She was a heavy drinker, so it wasn't a priority to her. Even our windowsills in every part of the house we're just littered with dead bees and flies So we had dead/alive rats and a bee infestation at the same time. Other than that our house wasn't particularly messy. So the landlord must have been living in absolute filth in her half of the house for it to actually affect us that badly. We never seen how she lives but I can only imagine. After being put at risk of contracting the bubonic plague and being randomly stung by bees many times I hated my home life as a kid and I resent my mother every single day of my life. I don't know why my mother let us live like that.

My mom has a friend who went to her friends house. Something was definitely off, and she saw the mom on the couch. I don't think either of them adressed each other, and she left the house without finding the friend (it was the 80s/70s). She found out later that the mother was dead before she went in there, but the catch was that the mother's corpse was on the bed... not the couch. We still talk about that one.

These stories are making me feel not as bad about my own house, lol. My entire family is slightly hoard-y, so our house is full of stuff. Our house isn't dirty (for the most part; the only dirty thing is something that we can't currently control - our walls have damp. We've had the council out several times to look at it, but they haven't done anything), just messy. I'm actually in the process of clearing out my room, and it's cathartic.

I used to consider myself pretty strong (as in I thought I could stand gross things) That was BEFORE I had the joys of cleaning out one of my grandparent's rental houses. The tenant moved across the country, and their buddies were supposed to collect a few large belongings from the house for them. The buddies instead used it as a hangout. There was fecal matter on the walls, in the toilet, in the sink- They had left rotten food on the counters, and for some reason, there was old breast milk stashed just about everywhere. Needless to say, *gross*. That's not even getting into the absurd amount illegal substances stashed beneath their porch 🥲 not an enjoyable experience to clean up.

There was an old man who lived in my hometown. He would just drive around on his for wheeler with his dog. One day we find out he’s in the hospital. My dad being the good soul he is. Decides we’ll solve the rat problem in his house if he ever recovers so he can have a nice reunion or whatever. I got dragged along for some reason. We open the door and his house is all the same color of green and black. His bed, fridge, floor, ceiling EVERYTHING. He has rat holes in his MATTRESS. You open the fridge and it’s all black and green. We set up so many mouse traps and it wasn’t uncommon to get 4 or 5 mice on one trap. The woman was a single mum with 3 kids, and every single room was packed full other than a little path to the beds. The kitchen was nasty to the point mum and I just said "nope" and left (we suggested she hire a proper cleaning crew, maybe some biohazard guys cause of the amount or mould and mouse crap we saw). They ended up getting booted out the house and it took about 4 months to get it cleaned.

The place eventually got so unclean it lead to pest infestations that could have be spread to friends places/work, this left everyone understandably furious that they (the friend) were not planning on informing anyone of this situation and were knowingly risking exposing others. I considered never talking to this friend again as I have an extreme phobia of parasites/infestations etc. And this was essentially my worst nightmare come true. In the end they left the job after staff blew up on them for all of the above, but the home is much cleaner now.

Her roommates were not much different, a druggy who was staying on his US father's money meant for studying but he spent it on acid and opioids, other was an alcoholic. Their bathroom was so bad, I either used the shower with mushrooms growing on it or went to use a public one. The druggy one threatened to stab me, because I made a small joke. Few years ago he died from an overdose. I feel bad for his father who just wanted the best for his son. But now I am keeping my bathroom spotless due to fearing that mess I experienced.

If I was in this situation I would have returned the same day, with all the groceries, and requested the manager reimbursed me not only the cost of the groceries but the cost of having to drive all that way to return them due to his staff members' abhorrent scent having spread all over the groceries. If asked I would have had no qualms telling him which employee it was, while that may seem Karen-ish to some people, others will understand that when you're struggling to pay for groceries these days you don't have the privilege to play loose and easy and not make a fuss. If the choice is I go without groceries for that week/fortnight because they had to all be thrown out or I return them to get a refund, you can bet I'm getting that refund. While I do understand that some medical conditions can make a person smell rancid, it's up to the employer to put their employees in appropriate positions. Putting an employee with a medical condition that makes them smell atrocious in front of customers is only going to turn away said customers. If the employee smells like a sewer because of poor hygiene however then a private conversation with the employee asking if they're okay, and why they may suddenly have poor body odor might be enough to address the issue. If it's not, and the employee simply doesn't care or can't smell it on themselves then a reminder that all employees must adhere to the business's policies regarding hygiene (a lot of businesses do have clearly stated hygiene and clothing/uniform requirements), and provide them with a written portion of the policy as well as an official warning. If the employee continues to come to work smelling because they either don't smell it on themselves or they don't care enough to stay clean, and it's a risk of turning away customers or making customers complain then it's time to fire them.

Aight that's it, gonna start cleaning today even if it's just the little things. My place isn't terrible like the one's mentioned, but my god I still feel the need to clean something after hearing all of that. I had to stop at 24:55 because the feeling kept growing and growing along with the disgust.

The mushrooms from story 17 are called puffballs, and the spores would cause breathing issues, pulmonary damage, and a fever. But the effects only last for a few months. They're caused by hypersensitivity rather than fungal growth.

For the first one, the cats are probably also being neglected, as if they are in the walls, and shitting on the floors, then clearly they are not being treated correctly.

My dog is pretty old. Honestly could just plop over and die any time now, makes me tear up when I think about it. Anyway, I used to have this rug in front of my door. It was one of those "Welcome Home" rugs. Only just recently did I realize the amount of pee on that rug. The moment I realized it I just rolled it up and put it in the dump. I love my dog, but omg she can be a little gremlin sometimes.

I got another one. Not mine, but a neighbor's. She was a kid that loved playing with one of the elderly neighbor's dogs, 3 little Chihuahuas. One of them got pregnant and had a couple of puppies, which delighted that kid and she was constantly over to play, with her parents permission (their room overlooked that neighbor's yard, so it was safe). One day, the elderly couple disappeared. They seemed to have travelled out of town. The dogs had been left on their own for the whole time and nobody fed them or gave them water, not even the kid neighbor, even though she knocked on the door and seemed worried. I guess they hadnt seen that nobody was looking after the dogs, or were scared of breaking in to help them. It got so bad, that one of puppies was eaten by the other dogs, alive. The kid neighbor saw it all. I found out because the parents of the kid neighbor asked me about the elderly couple and told me what happened to their dogs when I told them I didnt know what had happened to them. I broke in, fed and gave water to the dogs, and buried the pup that had been eaten. They took huge chunks out of the poor pup, pretty gruesome stuff. I kept looking after them for 3 days until the owners came back. Turns out, they had an emergency and had asked their drug addicted son to look after them. He instead went on a bender and never showed up. The kids parents were very angry because their daughter was traumatized by the scene and had felt like calling the cops for animal cruelty, but had second thoughts because the owners were elderly and were also worried about them. Good thing they didnt, since it wasnt their fault. They ended up giving her the other pup that survived, and she still happily looked after their dogs, though im not sure how they were behaving after cannibalizing one of their own. At least the pup looked happy and healthy with the kid neighbor.

My dad says my apartment is very creepy because I am into vulture culture and collect skulls and other similar things. But besides the fact that there are skulls (that are neatly organized and labeled on the walls and in a cabinet), it’s a lot of bright colors and nothing like edgy or anything? I also have tarantulas and snakes and beetles, but again, those are just animals and I do not have them to be edgy or scary. I just enjoy low maintenance pets with pretty colors.

These stories with the nasty nightmare house remind me when one summer I was working for a cleaning company in my town. We usually cleaned vacation homes, and residential homes of older people who were not able clean their bathrooms for obvious reasons. But one day on my day off I got a call from my manager who asked if I wanted to go clean a house with them. I said yes because I was just fresh out of high school and needed some money to buy me a new car to commute. We end up going to this beautiful house and I was having high hopes for it being an easy bathroom cleaning. Low and behold as soon as the home owner opens the door I could see MOUNTAINS of trash and random stuff all over the house. Even on the floors. I was mortified that the living room and kitchen looked like that. But worst off was when I headed to the bathroom to see piles of USED toilet paper all over the bathroom. I talked to my manager and said that I was sorry but I was quitting. 13$ and hour was not enough for me to stay with the company at all.

Now, before we moved to the country and then to the house we live in now, we lived in the suburbs of Portland. Across the street from me, I had this friend (who went to the same school as me) named Ava. Me and Ava were good friends, and we were mutually friends with this other kid named Capri. So, Ava, she was bullied at school. The reason was because apparently, she never brushed her teeth. I had nothing against her and still don't, maybe she wasn't taught or just didn't have a toothbrush (she didn't have as much money as we did, my dad earned a lot), so she had these CRAZY cavities. Like I felt bad, because they must have hurt. They were on *all* her teeth, and they must have been crazy painful. They were basically destroyed beyond the point of no return. Her breath wasn't the best, but of course I never mentioned it because I didn't want to be rude. And her house... her house was insanely dirty, like not as bad as some of these, but the worst I've ever seen. It smelled. That's all I have to say. Last time I talked to her was 2nd grade so maybe those teeth were just her baby teeth and she's doing better now

My mother was an animal hoarder and it was horrific. Her animal of choice was cats, but she had other kinds of animals too. I felt so bad for them. She had an attached garage. I would walk through the garage to enter her house. It was like walking into a wall of stench and my stomach would immediately turn. I would walk through her kitchen and dining room and out a sliding glass door out onto her deck. I would lean over the rail and throw up. If her dogs were outside, they would come racing over and eat the puke coming out of my mouth before it even hit the ground. I had to walk back and forth across the deck as I threw up over the rail to keep from puking on their heads. After I emptied my stomach, I would steel myself for the smell and reenter her house and say "Hi Mom!"

My ex wife used to know this family that would leave dishes all over the counters, and the bathrooms had spider webs (not cobwebs, spiderwebs) in the corners. The only clean rooms in the house were where the dad lived and worked. They managed to keep stuff off the carpets and out of the hallway, but the rest of the house was just dirty. In the living room they had the living embodiment of the Jeff Foxworthy joke about a smaller working TV sitting on top of a larger non-working TV. They also had a swimming pool that had long since turned green with algae, and probably was a mosquito breeding ground (we didn't go out there.)

Not a home, but I worked as a dance instructor for a pretty big dance company for a summer. The break room was infested with rats, there was mold everywhere, and packets of food that had expired months or even YEARS prior. Being desperate for praise and extra money, I cleaned it all up and kept cleaning all summer. What I should've done was dumped it all out on the dancefloor for the clients to see before quitting. I later found out that the owner and manager have no interest in the safety or well-being of their employees.
