And disappointingly but not surprisingly, countries that tend to score lower are places in Africa, Middle East, or Asia which are already marginalized in many respects anyway. There is clearly a pattern with places like Denmark and Sweden and Norway having better education and economics and such, they also tend to be better off economically in general. Global inequality is a serious problem and every one of us in any country should be able to grasp basic respect and decent etiquette. It’s ridiculous how often this is so overlooked and I’m sure all of us play some role where we could do better.

Yeah, me too. I'm also curious as to why Finland is higher on the list than Sweden. Sweden legalized same-sex marriage wayyy earlier than Finland. Our country is also currently run by politicians whom definitely aren't LGBTQIA+ friendly. During our president elections people constantly discussed and were disgusted by the thought of having a gay president. Many LGBTQIA+ teens are kicked out from their homes immediately after turning 16. Schools are awful and don't teach about these things. My teacher was fired because he showed us the document about Alan Turing. So yeah, don't think it deserves to be higher up than Sweden.

I've done a little more research into this for Greece in particular since I want to move there. From what I can tell, Greece is doing almost everything right regarding legislation protecting the rights of LGBTQ individuals and the broader community of the country. The only thing docking its overall score is the wider public in the country. Yes, they are known for their hospitality, but they are very religious and stubborn people (that second part is self-explanatory considering the geography of Greece). The older generation is generally not as welcoming to fellow citizens who identify as LGBTQ. Other than that, it seems like the big cities are the best place to live, and someone from the LGBTQ community can live quite happily in those areas with a good job and fluency in the Greek language. Like any country in the upper half of the scale, if you are kind and cordial to the people you meet, you have a good chance of changing other's minds and hearts. Sadly, that's not always the case. But there's a chance, and I think we should all work together to show that all we want is to be kind to each other and live our lives like everyone else does. Just because some countries treat us better than others doesn't mean we should avoid them (if they are safe in the legal sense). It means we should do our individual part to show others that we are just like them in almost every way and help them catch up to the countries higher on the safety scale! ❤
