Yeeep. And even if someone can get therapy and medication that's not a guarantee that they'll have a good and competent therapist and or psychiatrist. And even then it's not a guarantee that everything will be perfect. My therapist and psychiatrist are great, and I'm still not doing as well as I'd like. Next time I talk with my psychiatrist I'm going to ask if I can adjust one of my meds for nightmares as I'm having breakthrough dreams/nightmares. There are a lot of crappy therapists and psychiatrists out there and people need to remember that. There are good ones but also then there's the cost.

That is a sign of the times. People think that for every health issue there is a pill or an appliance or a therapy that will efficiently ’cure’ the health issue or just make the unpleasant thing go away. This does not only apply to health issues, but to any aspect of life or nature. If their app says that the weather will be clear and dry all day, they will believe the app, even if it is dark and clouded outside and they can smell the moisture in the air. If the weather app had a button to clear the sky, they would press it and expect the clouds to really disappear. Consumer mentality…

As someone in the UK currently living on PIP ( disability) I really wish it was as much as people think it is. I'm not even 40, I have a teenager and a brain tumour. It's not fun, I'd rather be back at work ( medically retired at 35). I'd love to be able to do the things people assume those on disability can supposedly do.

I once had a female colleague ask me who washed my clothes ironed my shirts because her brother had recently got divorced and needed someone to do these things for him. Apparently he'd asked her to do them for him but she explained she had enough to do doing the cooking, laundry, etc for her husband and sons. Me: 'Tell me why don't you pay someone to do all that for you?' Her: 'I can't afford to.' Me: 'Exactly. I get paid the same as you, so why do you think I can afford to pay someone to do it for me?' Her: 'You must do. You're a single guy, your mum doesn't live locally and you're not gay so who does your cooking and cleaning and stuff?' Me: ' I do it myself.' Her: 'What! Really?' Me: 'Yes. I suggest your brother does the same.' Her: 'He doesn't know how.' Me: 'Maybe that's why his wife left? Tell your brother to buy an iron and ironing board, plus a cookery book or visit the BBC recipe site. Does he have a washing machine?' Her: 'Yes, but he doesn't know how to use it.' Me: 'Well either show him or tell to read the instructions. Then teach your husband and sons to do the same. Personally I'd be ashamed if I couldn't look after myself as a grown adult. It's time they all learnt.'

*he's not gay* 💀 *he doesn't know how to use the washing machine* 💀💀 Honestly, as someone who ended up doing more housework than my brothers, I low-key hate women who coddle their sons like that. It's like they're brainwashed.
@bobthebuilderday6leader
@bobthebuilderday6leader 2 жыл бұрын
Oh god. I’m Asian and you can see how patriarchal our culture is. Women are expected to do all the housework and men do the “real” work. Thankfully the younger generation doesn’t really follow that archaic mentality anymore. Maybe her household has the same old-timey mentality, which honestly sucks. Boys and men should learn how to be independent.
@speleokeir
@speleokeir 2 жыл бұрын
@@bobthebuilderday6leader Sadly many of my female colleagues in that office were the same. They all came from a local, working class background where this was the norm and so they didn't question it. It was a bit like living in the 1950s. In contrast most of the people I socialise with come from a more middle class, educated background where this is less acceptable. If one of my male friends acted this way he'd get crap from both the guys and girls. A lot of that comes from going to uni which is an important step in gaining your independence and being forced to learn how to look after yourself. If you want to eat properly and have a limited budget it's an excellent incentive to learn these skills. And the good thing is everyone else is in the same boat so you learn together and there are plenty of people to ask for help and advice. I was fortunate compared to may because I was taught to cook at school and by my mum. By my mid-teens on the days my mother worked I was expected to make the evening meal, put the washing on, etc so when I left home I had all the skills and was able to pass these on to friends and housemates who's parents had run around after them and left them unprepared for living on their own.

@speleokeir
@speleokeir 2 жыл бұрын
@@vikbys Yep. The stereotype is that gay men are more feminine, stylish and know more about clothes, etc so therefore will know how to do 'women's work' whereas straight men need a woman to do these things for them. Yes, there are still plenty of people who think that way. Pretty much all of the women I worked with didn't know what to make of me. They knew I wasn't gay, but I knew how to cook, use a washing machine, etc. They couldn't get their head around it, since all their partners and male relatives simply didn't do that and their wives/mothers, etc ran round after them. Like I said it was as if I'd been time warped back to the 1950s.

This 🙈 I'm currently (kind of) employed, but for me in the past and many of my friends, it has been just that there simply aren't places that are hiring people with our expertise in our area or surrounding areas? Not everyone can be healthcare workers who get employed here just by walking through the door 😅 And yeah, the options are minimum wage jobs, unemployment, and going back to school for a new degree, which is often not possible. Every once in a blue moon there might actually be a listing for a job with our degree requirements. I'm glad my country at least has a safety net for unemployed people so the benefits are livable and there are workers checking on you and helping with finding new work possibilities. Also, what about people with disabilities? Chronic illness? Burnout and other mental health problems? To hell with 'lazy' 😬

I said, my parents aren't paying, i have a student loan like the majority of people at uni. i later found out she was from a private school whose fees wouldve been higher than uni fees. the absolute assumption that everyone's parents pay for them to go to uni is sooooo out of touch from the average university experience.

Other point about living on disability (at least in the US, though other countries have similar issues): living on disability benefits won’t even put you above the poverty line. It’s not enough money to live in most areas. Also they’ll stop giving you benefits if you make too much money elsewhere OR if you get married (I know that’s also true in the UK). Being disabled is almost always more expensive due to the high cost of medical care, mobility aids, caretakers, and other accommodations. I spend thousands of dollars out of pocket on medical care every year and I have insurance. Disability benefits basically only work if you have someone else paying most of the bills (and that person can’t be your spouse) Edit: forgot to mention that if you don’t have the initial money and transportation needed for a doctors recommendation or diagnosis for disability benefits, you often can’t get it. Discrimination in medicine is also a huge issue…
@norXmal
@norXmal 2 жыл бұрын
I know at least here in Norway(since Jan 2022) if you reach over certain amount per bill (20-25$) you can request a refund or you can apply for a coverage card that will void you from any future bill that is used to directly treat your illness/injury/etc that you applied for, you can extend it if more came to be. I believe before Jan 2022 it was done by how much you paid per year (2460kr / 256$) and if you are residing out of the country it generally will cover 75% on all procedures, I am not 100% sure regarding outside of the country, so take it with a grain of salt. Transportation is also covered if used to travel to appointments, albeit if you the coverage card, you most likely already have a disability card that lowers the transportation cost drastically.

A few weeks ago an older man approached me and my sister at a bar. Pulled a chair over and proceeded to ask what we do for a living. I'm 21, my sister is 20. She said she is a barista, and I'm a chef. He went on to say how absurd it is that we work these jobs when there's people having to pick the coffee beans to allow us to have these jobs. Obviously that is a horrible fact of our society, but at the same time my city is poor and job opportunities are not good. You take what you can get to make a living in an economic crisis. He then told us we should just get up and move country and actually live and appreciate life. As if either of us chose to have been born and live in a deprived city, work hard jobs on minimum wage and watch the economy fall to pieces all during a pandemic. The point I knew we were in political trouble in the US was in 1994 when of the 82 new Republican members of Congress from their landslide election win that year, it was reported, I think in the context of them all having to apply for passports simply to function in their new jobs, that only one quarter of them even possessed a passport. The passport circulation statistics currently given by the State Department are a mess and not to be relied on (for example, suggesting that only three percent of Americans had passports in 1989) but as I recall at the time, it meant incoming GOP members were below the national average on passport holding which was perhaps one-third -- remarkable for someone as high ranking as a member of Congress. (More than 90 percent of serving MOCs on average hold passports and not surprising given the number of times they're sent on foreign trips for doing things like oversight of US foreign policy, but I'd wager the rate of passport holding in the UK Parliament was close to 100 percent).

Classmate: “why is he nervous about getting fired? Why is that bad? Why is getting yelled at (by your boss) bad?” The context for this was in a creative writing class, in which the classmate was asking me to explain a scene in my story where a guy is getting berated by his boss and threatened to be fired in front of all his coworkers and is having a lot of anxiety because of it. They didn’t understand why that was a bad situation. They straight up didn’t understand work or the stress of being yelled at. They said they never had a job before, which, ok fair, I had a friend that went to college on scholarship without ever working part time (though when I told her about this she asked if this person was new to earth). Then when I tried to relate it to getting yelled at by a teacher or parent in which the teacher threatens detention or the parent threatens to ground them, they told me they had never been yelled at in their life. After that I didn’t trust a word that came out of their mouth in regards to what they thought of my story. And believe me, they really tried to convince me that my story wasn’t relatable to anyone in the room when I had been in that position so many times working retail.

Here it's super normal to use buses and trains. Everyone from school kids, pensioners, young working adults and students, to older working adults and hell, even many people like university researchers and such, use local buses. I live in a part of town that only has one bus connection and it still goes 3 times/hour on weekdays, 2 times/hour on weekends. Between the city center, uni campuses and the hospital area, there are buses going about every 4-ish minutes. It's fast, easy and efficient, and you can save a lot of money with a bus card :D Inter city travel is also easy with buses and trains, again, used by people of most earning ranges. It's safe and usually uncomplicated, although train travel tends to cost more than bus travel, but it's also faster since the trains speed up to 100-200km/h depending on the connection. So yeah, cars are really only necessary if you live in rural areas or have to transport a lot of stuff regularly. Of course many people still have their own cars, but it's definitely not a necessity. Haha, sorry about the rant, I just think public transport is useful and important 😅 Oh, and in my city, it's perfectly possible to use a bike for travel, the bike routes are in good condition and there's a lot of them!

Nothing to do with other people’s issues, but why would the theocratic states of America get the Air Force? Its a separate federal entity, so id assume whichever party maintains the DOD would be the one that keeps it, not to mention the Air Force isn’t particularly religious and might have even less religious people than the army or marines given that nowadays atheism is most common among those is scientific/engineering professions, which constitutes a large portion of the USAF

Australia is experiencing a housing affordability crisis at the moment. Sydney median house price is $1.5M AUD. I think it's something like 14 times the median wage. It's pure madness. Rural areas are also going bonkers in the market. The Prime Minister of Australia, let me repeat that - THE PRIME MINISTER OF AUSTRALIA said something along the lines of "People who are struggling to pay rent should just buy a house". Sure dude, I'll buy 10!!! Duuuuuude, you're running the country, you'd think you'd understand that people are paying astronomical rents of $500-$600 a week rent (in the cheaper areas) because they can't afford to save up the $180-$200K deposit required, funnily enough. 6:54 Thank you for reacting as I would to the electric car statement! I passed my test a few years ago, and I thought, do you know what? Maybe the iron is hot right now, let's see how feasible it is to go electric! I don't need the latest tech, let's just go for something modest, small... The best deal I could find was a hire purchase agreement on a Nissan Leaf (that's OK, I actually like the Nissan Leaf). The car was around £10,000. But to get the hire purchase agreement, you had to put down a £5,000 deposit. I mean, wow...if I had £5,000 of disposable income to spend all at once on a car, then why would I use it to NOT actually completely buy a car?! I'd just go and buy a nice new £5,000 petrol car! (except I didn't, I bought a second-hand one for £400 that sort-of lasted me three years, with around £1,000 of repairs, so yeah...if I'd gone electric, by now I'd be around £8,000 down and STILL have a couple of years to go before I actually owned the Leaf...)

"External things don't affect your mental health; it's all about you." That's basically something my dad told me once when I was like 8 years old, after I was crying because something he'd said hurt my feelings. He replied, "no one can hurt your feelings unless you let them. When my grandfather died, I let myself be sad." Like... 1) that's obviously BS, and 2) his response to his young son crying was to blame the kid instead of comforting. Many years later, I took a few psych courses at uni, including a neuropsych course, and guess what? That's not how emotions work. I know, shock and awe! Emotions evolved to guide us away from harmful outcomes and towards beneficial ones. They are *mostly* influenced by external factors. (Yes, some of it is internal, based on how we think about outcomes to determine if they're good or bad, but to say that means you can just pretend nothing is bad and always be happy is... fucked up, dumb, and incorrect.)

I had this told to me when my dog was diagnosed with cancer last Christmas…..it shouldnt take me brushing up on psych to explain to them that being sad is a normal response when a vet says your 6 pound dog will not make it to 2023. To not worry anyone, she is still alive rn. Paid for a short chemo protocol to buy some time with her. She is sitting with me rn watching KZbin. Everyday after work I walk her, and play with her. She has done 2 training classes since the diagnosis bc she likes being a working dog-about to start another class. Chemo days were hard, but now that it is over, it is just me and her [and her two older brothers]. I am doing my best to give her a good quality life everyday until it is time, and it is harder some days than others on my emotions. I am still sad of course, and when I was told not to cry it made me cry harder-having someone invalidate my feelings. Sadly, it is news like this that shows someones true colors.

So prices for dorms in my country have been extremely high lately and the news has been really focusing lately on how students struggle to pay for their dorms and the different alternatives some students have taken to because they can’t afford to pay the dorm’s rent every month. Recently my uni’s principal got interviewed by a newspaper. He was asked about the dorm prices rising (because it’s just a big news item) and he just answered with “if you don’t have a 900€ phone, you can perfectly afford a dorm”, completely ignoring that 900€ is just about 3 months of rent for your dorm and most dorms need you to sign a 12 month contract so that phone won’t even pay for the entire thing. Also ignoring that the uni he’s the boss of prides itself on how technology forward it is and it’s literally impossible to got to that school without a smartphone. He got a lot of backlash for that quote (which was used in the title of the article) to which a responded with “go read the entire article and don’t take me quote out of context”, which would be fine if not for the fact that it’s behind a paywall and he is talking to students who are already struggling to get everything paid without having a stupid newspaper subscription.

Neither of these are particularly entitled. The carrot one's been gone over, but even with the "Not burden my dad": having the ability to get nice things does not make you out of touch, unless you also take these abilities for granted. If someone couldn't buy a house but their parents were willing and able to, then it would be very kind of them (and in fact a sign they realise how lucky they are to be in this position) not to add to the burden by insisting it be in a specific area or neighbourhood. Beggars can't be choosers as they say, and so the people literally having their parents buy them a house are in no position to insist it be in a location they want, especially when that location would be troublesome for the people doing the actual buying.

@@trianglemoebius What you're missing is that the house was for university. As some who is currently in uni, I do not know any student who does not rent or anyone even considering buying somewhere to live whilst they study. People do not own houses at 18/19 unless, as Evan says in the video, they got Daddy's money. To have your parents be able to just buy you a house for uni, pick a city and quickly and easily make a huge financial investment that a lot of working adults struggle with these days, is out of touch because it is not something that anyone else does or even considers as a possibility. And how is it not taking it for granted? I wasn't there (this is my friend's story) but i'm pretty sure they didn't say 'I'm so very very lucky to have my dad buy me a house to stay in' they said something closer in tone to 'oh yeah my dad will just buy me a house for uni, no worries' which is taking it for granted. And whilst it is considerate to not go where your dad tells you it would be a hassle, its also saying 'I can't live there because I can't have my cushy house paid for by daddy's money and would have to rent accommodation like everyone else' so not exactly the Saint you make them out to be.

In response to the disability thing: It's out of touch bc a) disability does not give you enough money to live b) if you're on disability, there are hugely strict rules about how much money you can have (if you have over 2000$ they can literally charge you and take your money) c) you also lose your benefits if you get married, making it a marriage equality issue as well. someone might not be able to get disability because they're married, but their partner cant support the family alone for example.

@@nerdyfangirl1 thanks for the pointer to Jessica, she’s super. The situation is quite nuanced and has changed a bit since as well, but confirmed my thoughts about ESA and the new ESA can be independent but only if you have worked and paid at least a year of NI, which was the same as when my wife claimed Invalidity Benefit originally 30 years ago. What is crazy though is those payments meant that in the early days of our marriage I could pursue my career and business and paid way more back in tax. If we had to chose I may well have had to restrict more to look after my wife and essentially have both of us on benefits! The other benefits Jessica lost were around housing and these are something that applies equally to all claimants as they start to co-habit. I think this just shows that disability benefits don’t cover enough.

You mentioning Oxford St and public transport reminds me that recently when the tube strike was on I had to get from Victoria to Kings Cross and I was going to use my push scooter but I was stressing about time (and it was raining which was quite grim) so I was like okay, fine I'll catch the bus- all was going well (minus the line down the street for the actual bus but everyone fit thanks to double deckers) until Oxford St- I didn't notice how slow the bus was until I realised people were walking faster than the bus, I got off at the next red light (thanks to the driver understanding) but it was too late- I missed my train to Liverpool despite scooting my heart out (I had 1 hr for the transfer, the bus was meant to be 20mins, took 10mins to get to Oxford street so we were stopped for at least an hour and while scooting I actually caught up to the bus '20mins' ahead of my original bus) and vowed to never catch a bus in London again- bike and scooter only if tubes are down and tbh, even if not. Oxford St is only nice at 5am I think. Avoid at all costs otherwise.

As someone who works at a community college, I would suggest that we are better at serving non-traditional (older, married, with kids, etc.) students than many universities, and if you are looking for small class sizes as a freshman/sophomore, I'd suggest earning your associate's degree at a community college (but make sure it will transfer to whatever university you plan to attend). You can also get a degree in nursing, or a certificate in cosmetology or diesel mechanics.

The buying a home (I will asume apartment) is really location based as well though. 5-6 years ago I saved up to buy an apartment and all my friends said it's better to rent. But when I showed them the numbers it quickly became aparent that you are basically paying the exact same in rent and you make up the difference in 2-3 years. I did live with my parents for a few years to save up the down payment but in the end it was worth it. For context the apartment of ~64 sq. meters cost ~78k EUR + finishing it up (it was basically just the walls, so flooring, painting the walls, doors etc. had to be done by ourselves) which was another 14k-17k. For referance a slightly above average pay here would get you ~1.2k per month after tax so you are getting 14-15k per year

I actually did buy an electric car to save on fuel bills. I realised that a ten year old Vauxhall Ampera (Chevy volt) would cost me the same in hire purchase as my fuel bills used to be on my £750 civic. Of course, now the price of electricity is insane so not sure how much I’m saving anymore and I wouldn’t be saving anything if I had a long commute but if you only do short distances then it’s ideal. Presumably long distance people will be able to start getting in on that as things like big battery Nissan Leafs and Kia Neros start ending their leases but that probably also has to wait until the energy crisis dies down

Mostly charging situations. You can get cheap ones that are good for just around town and everyday tasks. Everything else is a big NO because they cost too much for most people right now. Now, Plug-in hybrids are fantastic options or even just normal hybrids. But also, just get what you can afford (whether a normal car, PHEV, Hybrid, or Electric).
