I have a 2022 Camry SE hybrid and I get at least 48mpg, however I often get 52. No doubt the best vehicle I’ve ever owned, comfortable, quiet, easy to drive and even relatively fast.

I had a 2012 Prius. I drove it for 90,000 miles and measured every gas fill-up. The read out in the car consistently was about 5% optimistic. For example, the car may say that I got 50 miles per gallon but when I measured it at the pump, the same way you did, it would come out to like 47 miles per gallon. I think your logic on making short trips is spot on. I would notice that if I only drove like 5 miles the MPG on the read out was like 38 miles per gallon. However if I did a 20 mile drive it was closer to 50 miles per gallon. Thanks for your analysis.

I have yet to get more than 43 driving on Normal with mixed city/highway. Rather disappointed with that outcome. pretty sure the EPA ratings are only based on Eco mode.
@escheidl5 сағат бұрын
As they say "your mileage may vary." So under those same exact conditions, If one of you had a straight 2024 ICE Camry XSE and followed each other around the city trip for trip, the ICE Camry would have most likely averaged 26 mpg (I'm being generous) making for a 17 mpg difference. Condition for condition, the hybrid will always come out on top.

This explanation is absolutely correct. I have a 2020 RAV4 hybrid. 63 k miles. Bought new in 2019. Over the life of the vehicle, my average is 43 mpg, which is 5 mpg more than EPA combined value. Mostly driven to work through city/suburban routes. Or weekends on highways. Shorter drives kills efficiency. Longer city driving 15 miles or more returns best efficiency. Most recently, maybe around 61k miles, I had two consecutive 50+ mpg tanks. Toyota hybrid system is a beast.
@BrianNC814 сағат бұрын
40mpg+ in a midsize car is excellent. The difference between 40 and 50mpg as far as fuel cost is extremely minimal. Over 1000 miles = 5 gallons. At current gas price approx $3 your talking price of a pizza $15. The difference between 45mpg and 50mpg is 2.22 gallons over 1000 miles. About the cost of a cup of Starbucks coffee. Anything over 40mpg is law of diminishing returns because its already so cheap to drive.

Air conditioning and heater affect fuel economy and other variables that affect fuel economy like elevation, air temperature and payload. The numbers on the sticker are given in Prime driving conditions. The secret is regular maintenance folks....air, oil filters and fluids every 5k miles.
@wicked_smaahtСағат бұрын
@@benrhoads6406 in Toyota hybrids, heaters run on the gasoline engine, but AC runs on the auxiliary electric motor. So, there’s no loss of efficiency for running AC in summer. Use of heater in winter kills efficiency, though.

my suggestion as for how we will drive "comfortably and economically" just think about this... Jan 23 we purchased a Tesla Model 3 for city driving so I get 200 miles for $8 bucks!!!! and Jan 24 we purchased the AMAZING MISTUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV for long drives. so no range anxiety... We love our pair of efficient vehicle...we are coming from V8 Durango and V8 Chrysler 300 so WE ARE SAVING Thousands of $ on gas!!! life is good!
@BrianNC814 сағат бұрын
What about total cost? If the Durango and 300 were paid off and you spent $400 in gas every month that may be significantly less than 2 car payments.
@TheMELTDOWN9112 сағат бұрын
@@BrianNC81 I agree and my wife and I really though about it but we deserve a change the Durango is 2007 with 4.7L and the 2008 300c with the Hemi...it was time for a change, also because we started having issues, honestly with good preventive maintenance and a NOT heavy foot all cars could be reliable, just many people abuse their cars, and then they complain, when the engine blows up! kaboom LOL!

You must have the FWD. I have the AWD XSE and I think it is rated 44 CIty, 43 highway, 44 combined. I've had mine almost a month and typically have been beating that by a little bit. I did a couple of calcs based on odometer and gallons to fill, and on other trips, the trip computer spits out a number after each drive. I'm not sure how precise the auto-shutoff in the fill nozzles are, but probably not enough to make a huge difference. Your "city driving" might not be the same as the EPA "city driving" loop, which is standardized. You might have more traffic lights or stop signs. Ah, the warm up theory is interesting too and makes sense. I've just started messing with Eco mode to see if it matters enough to notice. It doesn't feel noticeably different. (Topher tested one and noted that "Sport" setting didn't change much either!). It is interesting to check the car's calculated mpg vs the old odometer and gallons to fill. Keep up the good work!

Does the car's estimated MPG account for idle gas cost? Like if you just sit there in park for hours, does the estimate actually go down? I feel like that may be why it's estimating higher than actual because the estimate only runs when it's in drive.
@oldnumber62 сағат бұрын
My estimated MPG goes up when idleling with the AC on. The electric motor is running, but not the gas motor.
