I am a huge GSP fan however, Chael is giving GSP way too much credit as it relates to giving up his middleweight belt. The fact of the matter is, George St-Pierre signed an agreement; a contractual agreement that he must defend the belt. He simply did not wish to defend the belt. So the UFC told him; relinquish the belt or be stripped of the belt. George decided to relinquish the belt...because he had to do so. It was not out of honor.

I think the UFC really bungled here. There was an opportunity to make a HUGE, record breaking fight.. and it's not as if they would have to promote either guy very much at all. ALL fans in Canada know who GSP is, even the casuals, for Christ's sake... and Khabib is very popular right now, not just in Russia but worldwide. Like Chael said, if GSP theoretically came back and won a 3rd UFC belt, but then relinquished it soon after - who cares? The sport and promotion still goes on, and GSP was likely the only guy capable of actually doing it that we will see in a long, long time... it's a bummer.

Sean Quade The LW division is extremely jammed up. More so than any other division in UFC history at any time. Tony deserves a shot very badly. Poirier is right there. Conor is still active. He came back because he knew that he could beat Bisping (notice how he's not even considering challenging Woodley even though that's the weight class that he always fought at and went straight to Khabib) I think he only wants fights that he is confident of winning which is why I felt like he didn't try too hard to make the fight with Khabib happen. I think he was hoping that McGregor would somehow have won so that he could fight him for the title but when Khabib won didn't want to look like he didn't want to fight him so retired. GSP wants to go out on a win which against Khabib I don't think he is confident of, while against Conor I think he is a lot more sure of a win because stylisticly he's a bad matchup for him but not so much for Khabib. That's just my purely speculative opinion though.

Dana was butt hurt when GSP vacated the WW title and didn't give them a rematch vs Hendricks which would have sold millions of PPV's. The reason GSP didn't fight MW is bc of health reasons, it would be different if he just didn't want to fight at MW, but he physically couldn't he got seriously ill, he nearly had to retire bc of that illness even if he would have agreed to fight 10 more times, he may not have been able to. GSP is way too small to fight at MW, and him being sick as fuck before he fought Bisping was proof of that and GSP listens to his body, his health is #1 over anything, even fighting for another title. Seen a video about how sick GSP was when he fought Bisping, and he still looked good, considering he was out for 4 years and was seriously ill for the last month of training camp.

not even the biggest gsp fan (fight style only, fan of the man), but DAMN, how do you, as a promotion, pass on the opportunity to have someone win championships in three divisions? Additionally, the match up itself would've been killer because so far, nobody has been able to contend with GSPs wrestling, and if there is a person to do so, Khabib looks to be the most likely suspect to date imo

From the UFC’s perspective, what gets more money, a GSP VS Khabib fight, that if GSP wins, he retir4s and it’s a one fight deal that destroys Khabib’s immortal status, or prevent that fight, maintain Khabib’s invincibility and allow him to continue fighting/winning (as an undefeated legend) and pile up PPV numbers, which would include Conor at some point.

THe UFC is guaranteed the highest PPV record in the history of MMA easily, that's a FACT! What youre proposing is Khabib defeats Fergusson, Poirier or whoever and the next 2 or 3 guys and assume Conor wins his next fight or two. I'm so happy to hear your just as confused about this as I am Chael! I hope you do get to the bottom of this! I'm certain I've seen videos of Gsp saying he could go down to 155 and was training to do so. This was my assumption to what he was currently doing and then I unpleasantly arrived to hearing his retirement. I completely agree with what your saying about where it would leave the division and I don't think it makes a difference for either guy. If khabib wins everything will be as it is now. If Gsp wins and vacates the title then there's a vacant title for the top guys to still be chasing. Good luck with your investigation sir!

Well said, GSP has always been the most pure fighter in the game. GSP has no weaknesses, none, he was only to be defeated if his opponent got lucky. Left hand, right hand, right foot, left foot, left or right knee, right or left elbow, strikes came from all of the above, never got lazy with that, comfortable throwing anything at any time. Force a take down on anybody, slam em down and end the fight within seconds with vicious elbows, or guy's would tap or he'd tear their arm/leg/foot/hand clean off, tap or you get your limb broken in half. The greatest fighter of all time, he's the Michael Jordan of mma, maybe even better
