I would like to push back on the deep and meaningful slightly. Yes it has to be mainstream and accessible but if the artist / producer can tap into a set of emotions that resonate in a broad way, they can bring meaning..I think it would have to be packaged appropriately but emotions and meaning (philosophy) is stuff that when done right can connect with everyone. I may be misunderstanding your take though

I think musically simple is probably fine, but really basic production makes it hard to stand out. Like you said, the problem with that is it becomes incredibly repetitive because nothing changes.
