My favorite scene in the film is Madeline Kahn as she's being dragged out of the hall. Her heels making two serpentine skid marks as they take her away. Hilarious!

My favorite comedy of all time! Streisand, O’Neil and Kahn are perfection! I watch it at least once a year. It never gets old. This movie made me a lifelong Barbra Streisand fan. My friends and I quote the film often. You’re upside down, Eunice that’s a person named Eunice? By next week? Use your charm. Lol

I absolutely LOVE this movie!! Saw it the first time on tv when I was a child, not knowing about it and what to expect. Bought the dvd some years later. Have since watched it at least 20-25 times. My favorite movie ever. Been some years since I watched it now, but think I still now all of it almost by heart. Just started to long to watch it again. Sadly, I know only like 3 people who’ve seen it, including my brother. There’s no reactions or reviews here on it, so thank you for this!!

I apologize if I already said so, but while I'm not big on this movie, it's a favorite of my best friend's. My own favorite moment is probably at the very end, when Streisand says "Love means never having to say you're sorry." I'm so old that I saw this when it first came out, and that line was a catchphrase from the infamously successful Love Story, which O"Neal had just starred in opposite Ali MacGraw. That line was everywhere at the time, getting repeated left and right. So when O'Neal replies "That's the dumbest thing I ever heard" -- oh, I wanted to cheer and applaud, such catharsis. For that alone I could have thanked this movie, but it has other charms too. And by the way: you're out of the car and back with your owls! And for that alone I could have thanked this video, but the review was good too. Owl be seeing you.

In fairness I thought Ray Milland put in a good performance for Love Story. And that's it really! Oh and I didn't mind the admittedly overly sentimental theme song.

Excellent review! And yes, it might be the funniest movie ever made. I saw this in the theater five times when it first came out (but remember, a ticket cost $3 back then). And i agree, so many of our friends have never heard of it. People don't realize how hard it is to do good comedy, so much that passes for comedy today is so childish. It reminds me of the story when director George Seaton was visiting actor Edmund Gwenn on his deathbed. He said to his dying friend “All this must be terribly difficult for you, Teddy.” (his nickname). Replied Gwen , “Not nearly as difficult as playing comedy.” He was right. Keep up the good work Jerome!

In the recent release of her autobiography, Barbra noted that she and O'Neal had started "dating" (or hook-up) before the film was even set up for production with Warner Brothers. When she was approached by Peter Bogdanovich, she told him she wanted O'Neal in the film. But by the time they started to film the movie, their little affair was pretty over - he wanted a free and easy, no commitment arrangement while Barbra was pushing for a little more security. They stayed as friends and had a blast making the movie, but there were a few times the strain of their relationship was tough on Barbra. And of course, years later they reunited for The Main Event. Another side note, Barbra has an odd sense of humor, or lack of - though her 25-year marriage to James Brolin has grounder her, at the time of the film she thought it would tank, so she sold her profit points back to Warner and cashed out. What's Up Doc was the 3rd grossing film in 1972 - a huge hit and she end up losing 2-3 million dollars. (by the way, I saw it at a drive-in theater in Santa Rosa CA with my family, we all loved it)

A year after this original post, I'm finding it After five decades of occasional rewatchings, it always holds up. If there is any sadness, it's realizing how fantastic audiences would find Madeline Kahn and how much I miss her work. This is one of the greatest debut performances I've ever seen, and it always impresses me how grand she performs. That countdown... those shrieks... and her bubbly pushiness which closes her scene. I can't name this funniest-ever-scene FOR ME because, well, I'm simply laughing too much to quantify. Heck - all the other contenders must be less, though, because they DO give me time enough to at least ponder counting and analsys - WHAT'S UP DOC does not. Does that make it my winner, too, then? MAY BE!

An enjoyable and fun homage to screwball comedies by one time potential genius Peter Bogandovich prior to his career nosediving. This was a genuine loss to film lovers everywhere though he remained a very good reviewer and commentator. I enjoy it a lot although it appears much better due to the dross released around that period (and yes I was a teenager at that time) The best moment is of course still the final line (esp for those of us who were teenagers and remember Love Story). Certainly well worth catching

I love how the jokes are set up in advance and pay off later in this movie and also the one event triggering the next in the chase sequence: I always laugh when I see Judy and Howard knock the garbage cans over, which roll down a hill and start chasing a pedestrian who then has to leap over a fence for his safety only to land in a garden restaurant on someone's table as they eat. I am HUGH!

The performance and tone of a joke is just as important as the writing and timing. My personal favorite line is when gold club guy shouts "Follow that cab! Your enthusiasm is spot on and when you talked about the hotel detective using his charm I began to laugh because I find that part hilarious too. I saw this in the movie theaters with my parents as a child and remember how much we enjoyed this comedy as a family. It's amazing that it's also rated G, which is a rarity these days even for Disney movies. It made me want to sit down with you and everyone else who loves it as much as we do. One of my favorite scenes is when the unassuming man is just walking down the street in San Francisco and suddenly garbage cans are rolling and bouncing all around him forcing him to jump over the fence and onto an unsuspecting lunch goers table. Thank you for your review. Absolutely in my top 10 movies of all time. It has a special place in my heart that are shared by only one or two other movies. And if you must know the other two movies are Breaking Away and Being There.

Hi Jerome, Just rewatched "What's Up Doc,?" after seeing this review. I remember laughing so hard at this movie when it was first released. I still remembered the basic premise of the film and immediately recalled Judy's line to the Judge as soon as I saw his face in this review. But I totally forgot about the last line of the movie, which had me in stitches upon this viewing. I'd never really made the connection to earlier Screwball Comedies until seeing this review (I've always loved "Bringing up Baby", "Some Like it Hot", and other silly films from the Black-&-White era that reduced me to giggle fits when I first saw them as a kid). I didn't know that this was Madeline Kahn's first movie performance; she played very similar characters in the Mel Brooks movies she was cast in, with those performances often being a highlight of the show. Thanks for inspiring me to look for this movie today!

What a day brightener...a review of one of my favorite comedies by one of my favorite reviewers! It's been a while since I've watched it...will have to get the Bluray. I recently heard that Streisand doesn't like the movie, and didn't like it while t was being made. Such a shame, because it's probably one of her most appealing performances. I love the entire cast, but I've come to think of Austin Pendleton as the film's secret weapon. Funny and charming, he's like the glue holding everything from flying apart!
@Weiselberry4 жыл бұрын
Apparently Streisand didn't think it was funny. However, when she watched it years later, she felt differently. Austin Pendleton's part is essential! Love the line under the table when he assures Hugh that everything's fine, "we're just chatting," as if it's the most natural thing in the world. :)

Peter Bogdanovich was an enormous fan of old Hollywood and had interviewed many of the greats for Esquire and MOMA. He was particularly close to Howard Hawks and Orson Wells. If you haven't seen it already, be sure to check out Paper Moon. Bogdanovich directing Ryan O'Neal again but in black-and-white with Tatum O'Neal's Oscar winning performance. I love this movie and anyone that thinks Streisand can't act needs to watch "Nuts". Amazing performances by some all-time-great Hollywood.

There are movies I went to when I was really young that were way over my head, this is one of them. The product of being the youngest of seven and going to movies as a family. The only thing I had remembered about the movie from that time was not understanding why the Ryan O'Neal character was marrying someone who was so much older than him. Peter Bogdanovich on the commentary from the Paper Moon DVD said Madeline Kahn was very willing to let them make her up as they wished but was then horrified by how she looked when she saw the movie. Her glam role in Paper Moon was Peter's restittution. TCM just ran this movie and Ben Mckenwicz interviewed Peter Boganovich. P.B. said Barbra wasn't thrilled with how during rehearsals Kahn was getting all the laughs and went on to say Barbra never thought the movie was funny until sometime in the recent past.

I totally agree with you on this one. Funniest movie ever. If you're not paying full attention, you miss little things that make it hysterically funny; such as the scene when the older lady found her case of jewels missing and she's on the ground crying and whining, and suddenly her voice trails off and she looks up and everyone is staring at her rather expressionless. It's just the way they did that scene that I always remembered because it's those details that make it so funny moment by moment. This is comedy at its absolute best. Also, loved the part where the garbage cans roll down the street and the guy that's running from them... brilliant!!! Such an unexpected addition. And yes, just when you think you couldn't laugh any harder, in comes the judge and the scenes that follow. Your sides will hurt from laughter watching this movie.

I really love this film, it's so funny :). " I don't think of you as a Woman Eunice, I think of you as Eunice" Lol. That scene when everyone is crouched under the table makes me laugh so much, it's the question about what the waiter served them that really gets me I think. Madeleine Kahn was really good, she was such a great comedic actor. I agree completely about the funniest scene probably being where the German concierge tells the little burly guy to use his charm to stall the lady and he then trips and kicks at her, it's shocking, so so funny. It's always such a fun film to see, it's one of those films you must watch when it's on, it reminds me a little of Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and Peter Sellers Pink Panther films in terms of its fast paced slapstick humour and gags and of course the great earlier films that you've mentioned in this brilliant review, films I really enjoy. :) ~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~

Really funny stuff. An underrated 70's screwball classic ! There was an attempt to make this film into a TV series in the late 70's, but it didn't happen.

One of my 10 favorite movies. Barbara Streisand never looked lovelier and Madeline Kahn was brilliant as always. My daughter and I quote this movie constantly.

Without Madeline, this movie would not be remembered. Can't think of anyone who could have done half as good in that role.

Definitely one of the funniest movies of all time! I can't make up my mind which is funnier: Bedazzled (1967) or this. I loved this since I first saw it on tv in the 70s, and was lucky enough to see it theatrically a few years ago. It definitely is a mood booster!

Oh I did forget Ghostbusters 1 and 2. (Yes I did like Ghosterbusters 2 ), no comment on that other one. Animal House, and Stripes. Forgot those too. I know everyone knows, Ryan O'Neal and Barbara Streisand also did The Main Event but heard it was so so. Any thoughts?

This is a perfect comedy I can watch anytime! I also recommend "Bringing Up Baby" which largely inspired this one!

If you're interested in Casablanca,I think you'll enjoy this account of how it came together. You could also do a really funny version of "As time goes..... BYE!!!" Best Wishes! kzbin.info/www/bejne/eX7ZeJiBqduip6M

Review “Take the Money and Run” when you’re in the mood for more quirky comedy. Woody Allen’s debut that had a really different feel to a lot of his later stuff.

Must be my funniest film ever too. I can't think of another comedy that left me with painfully strained facial and belly muscles like this one did. "Oh god I can see."

Ahh, one of my favorites, ever since i was a kid. Showed it to my daughter when she was about 9, and i was happy to hear her call it her favorite movie a few years later. (I think it has since been surpassed by Barbie, but it's still high on her list.) I was laughing throughout your vid, remembering funny line after funny line (Yes Eunice; How much without buffering?; I am Hugh/You are me?/No, I am Hugh/Stop saying that). Never disappoints, this movie. Funny about Barbra Streisand and her possible annoyingness (04:49) -- I never felt that way, as opposed to Bringing Up Baby, where Katherine Hepburn IS so annoying to me. I don't dislike Hepburn, but that movie, oh man, she drives me batty. Which is why I keep Baby off any favorite comedies list -- as opposed to, say, His Girl Friday, which is a Hawks screwball that I adore.

Yes! I remember this movie well! It also contains a lot of the brand of humor found in Bugs Bunny/Looney Toons cartoons!

Oops, more from the hog of comments, more recommendations, All Of Me, Steve Martin, Lily Tomlin. Planes, Trains And Automobiles (for Thanksgiving), Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, and any with Jack Lemon and Walter Mathou. Sorry, sometimes Jerome Weisonberry gets the hog out of me. One of the best people on KZbin.
