The thing that bothers me the most is the Las Vegas Thing since I live there and there is no way SpiderMan can get anywhere swinging around unless they can fly only the casino filled strip has skyscrapers that are close to each other and is actually quite small compared to the rest of the city. And most of the crime is outside the strip since some of those casinos have some of the most advanced security in America so and it is a tourist destination to go to the strip. Most of the crime happened outside of the strip in the residential area(of which I live in) and there are many different areas like this and there are NO buildings that make it easy to swing the most is a three story building and they are spaced out with large desert like plots waiting to be bought by big business companies that are ruining the economy here and bringing a lot of traffic. What I mean is there is no way SpiderMan or anyone with spider powers or similar to it can get anywhere in the city where most of the crime is. This shows that some comic writers are lazy and go, “Hmm we need a new comic but where in America will it be?” They google search the most famous cities in America and don’t even research about it just throw the characters into that city.

The only cities that could support a spider hero are East of the Mississippi. LA is a big city and full full of crime but we don't have that many skyscrapers or really tall buildings because of the freaking earthquakes. Unless Marvel introduces some revolutionary building material that negate the dangers of Earthquakes a Spider themed hero can't work out here. Chicago and Boston might work. Never been out there but unlike Western cities they're old tightly packed cities with reputations of being filled with crime.

Remember in a Spider-Verse tie-in comic where Ben Reilly is characterized as being the optimistic one compared to Peter and Kaine? I feel like that's what Ben Reilly SHOULD be. Heck, that's what i feel like the dynamic between all Spider-Bros should be. Ben's the optimistic one, Kaine's the foul-mouthed pessimist, and Peter's the one in between.

I agree. Maybe they could've explained that since Ben doesn't have the same amount of stress as Peter (stable job life, less personal villains like Green Goblin, less complicated personal relationships), he learned to enjoy the simple life, thus letting go of the angst that came from being a clone. And then, as you said, he became more optimistic. Dude, you actually made me like Ben Reilly as his own character. Thanks for reminding me of that comic.

Okay the two spider-clones need to meet back up with the OG and they all need to have a major talk and a fist fight to get them back in order. Peter needs to get back on track, Ben needs a reality check, and Kaine needs both. Seriously Peter is the big guy for the company and straight up if the three of them and some other members of the Spider Clan like Silk, Spider-Girl, Madem Web and Miles worked together they could be the most dangerous group in the Marvel universe. Super smart assassins with mid tier super strength, speed, healing, and a top notch danger sense. They would kick ALL the ass. Whose with me?

The worst part about this new Scarlet Spider run, in my opinion, is how badly Kaine got shafted to have it come about. Chris Yost had a fantastic run with Kaine in Texas. He got a chipper sidekick to mellow him out, he had a “Mary Jane” style love interest and a cool hotel hideout. He slowly learned how to be a hero and slowly redeemed himself over his past. But, the most important part was that Ben Reilly was his “Uncle Ben” figure and Peter was his gentle reminder. Kaine kept comparing himself to Ben as he became more moral, reluctantly at first but then more favorably later. He was just beginning to accept his role and then it was all taken away. And this new Ben Reilly just pisses all over this progress by hypocritically chastising Kaine even though he’s a shadow of his former self. His story has become a worse version of Kaine’s with no solid direction and the “Ben/Kaine” dynamic has lost it’s punch. I just can’t devote myself to reading it anymore except to see what happens to Kaine because Yost got me hooked through 25 issues of the previous Scarlet run. Plus, I’m just scared to death Kaine’s going to get thrust back into the villain position, even though, (Again, IMO) he deserves the chance at redemption and being a hero.

Unpopular Opinion: I really, liked the costume that Ben started out with in the first issue. Most of the "Backlash" came from that first cover that I will admit does not show the costume in the best light. Bagley is normally in top form. But in this cover, he drew that weird "mouth" on Ben's mask trying to get that "Diet-Deadpool" vibe going, and his hood didn't really connect to the suit properly. One side of the hood was attached to his back, behind his shoulder and the other side is too close to his neck. Making it look, at first glance, that Ben's new costume had a blue wig over his mask instead of a hood. The art in the book and the variant covers show how good the suit can look when it's not drawn on a really wonky cover, and it looks to combine the best elements from Ben's og hoodie, and his Spider-Man costume. I really liked the suit and was kinda bummed that Marvel listened to the fans bitching before they actually saw art of the book. Like, wait to see the suits in action before you throw hissy fits.

Man the problems you are having with this is the same problem I have with Jessica Jones season 2. It's hard to get invested in her as she jumps from 'misunderstood anti-hero' to 'actual rude criminal' so often. I guess that's kinda the point as we are meant to understand how easy it is to relapse into old ways or old versions of yourself, but it's still tricky as a viewer sometimes.

The thing that completely bothers me about all of it is how much I love Ben and how SO MUCH POTENTIAL was wasted in favor of turning it from a buddy cop comedy to something straight out of fucking Supernatural. Ben Reilly would've made an excellent story if he actively seeked out his past. In Clone Conspiracy he laments he's a sentimental man by nature, he holds onto memories and keepsakes (building a house similar to the one he 'grew up' in before the blood cell separation and the cloning happens). This is further reinforced in his run in the 90s. Ben has friends. Ben has a job but he genuinely cares for these people, genuinely believes in his lifestyle and the people he chooses to keep in it. Hell, his compassion extends to Kaine, who mercilessly pursued him and Janine Godbe for Lord knows how long and when Kaine cries out to let him die Ben offers a hand in help. And that really fucking stood with me. What if, instead of all the Vegas nonsense (along with the unlikeable Cassandra Mercury), Ben simply seeked out Janine? Fresh out of prison. Only to find out she's married with a kid. What about going to the Daily Grind to find it's closed down years ago? Desiree Winthrop moved out to Hollywood, Jessica became a reporter who seeks out justice for the misunderstood? What if Ben Reilly simply discovers he's holding onto memories and he's a man essentially out of his own time? What if Ben's redemption was all about simply finding himself and therefore a reason to don the webshooters again? Shit, Marvel. I like the clone saga, yeah I said it. It was convoluted as all shit, there were plots that either led nowhere or to something completely outlandish, but dammit all if Ben and Kaine were not solid additions. Kaine got a solid arc of finding himself. Why not Ben?

I didn't read too many of the comics back then but I got my hands on an issue when I was really young and I found the most interesting part of Ben is that He is basically Peter Parker, but Is unable to go back to that life, because it's not his, and his struggle to form a new life and a new identity. Ben could be used to be very self reflective and ask those questions on what makes you the person that you are. Hopefully Ben gets the proper treatment in the future.

Yes we did! I'm a long-time Peter Parker fan, but when I finally got around to reading the dreaded Clone Saga, I realized that Ben Reilly is a far better Peter than Peter himself is (e.g. far less whiny). It's just a shame this book can't seem to get him right.

I am shocked this book hasn't been canned yet. Like you said, it isn't bad... but it's a ways from being truly good or even consistent. It's the kind of mediocre that you wouldn't expect from Peter David. I love Ben Reilly and Kaine, and if you told me years ago that a book co-starring them would consistently have me going "meh" every month, I probably wouldn't have believed it.

From the little bit I saw of the interview they did before the series started the writer wasn't really enthusiastic about writing for Ben until he found out he recently became a villain. So, it definitely feels like he was heavily leaning into the idea that he was writing a guy who's totally nuts, trying to be a hero, but is still basically a villain. Which, yeah, I can see how that would have some major backlash. Especially since there's probably a lot of people who had kind of checked out Spider-Man comics since the 90s, but upon hearing Ben was back eagerly looked into the book and THIS is what we got? A psycho who's seeing and talking to figments of his imagination and behaving more like a 90's anti-hero (When he's not being a straight up villain) than as the Ben Reilly we know and love. Marvel has continually done Ben dirty and this is no exception. Seriously, you waited over 20 years to bring him back only do make him a deranged Villain!? Really!? A fan favorite who people have been wanting back for decades and THAT'S how you bring him back? As someone completely unrecognizable as the character everyone loved? Yeah, thanks I hate it.

Just got this in my recommended after finishing the series in preparation for Beyond and I really have to agree about the art. You can tell where it's traced over models, hell sometimes it seems like the artist was just putting a shader over the model. Most apparent in the one issue where the dudes are driving around the strip doing drive bys in a "Bronco" (script says bronco, but the artist used a cheap 3d model of a Jeep, another huge pet peeve of mine), you can see the polygons of the model. However the few issues where André Lima Araújo provided art were immaculate, and the covers by Khary Randolph often outshone the art within.
