Hi Dillon, nice informative and not technically confusing video. Clamps and weights couple the record to the platter/mat. Weights are good but clamps are better because they tightly couple the record to the turntable and smooth out most warps, but clamps are more expensive. I use clamp mostly but have a weight to. like yours, its right weight and looks good. even a very cheap turntable will benefit from a weight or clamp, only caveat with cheapo tables like Crossley etc., don't put too heavy a weight/clamp on them since their motors are very flimsy and will burn out trying to turn the extra weight. enjoy the music......when our border walls come down i will get over there to see your store....

I sometimes use something that is more like a clamp, that sits on the spindle and screws on to tighten it, to keep it flatter on the platter which is helpful with older records that are slightly warped. I use an old vintage Pioneer PL 117D turntable as a daily driver with an expensive audio technica cartridge/stylus.

I have a sliver one that has a built-in level. The main reason I bought it was to make sure I leveled my TT correctly, and yeah, it looks pretty cool. I've been playing most of my records with it on, but recently, I've been suspecting that it generates some static. When I play a record without it, I hear and see less effects of static on a record (less dust particles and pops). I'm still experimenting with it. I have a record with a noticeable warp that I purchased new at a local store that I could not return (thanks to quarantine). I play it with the weight on, and maybe that's why it sounds good. So, perhaps it does have its benefits, but I'm still suspicious of the static.

Although I am a newbie, I think a weight helps. When a record is on the platter and it is cleaned with a brush. That brush(depending on the type) will create friction and cause the record to slide on the platter if any sort of force is used. I use a felt block from Vinyl Fudge and put a little too much force down and saw the record slide. OOPS. Lesson learned but there could be micro movements if you dont use a clamp.

I appreciate it. Another guy just posted a beginner video, said he has one and it isn’t worth it. I think your right, it can help with some snap, crackle, pop and definitely on warped records. Some records are super warped, but some has just a slight warp in one spot or only noticeable on one side. I think it’s good in those cases.

to me, all the information on these things tells me one thing. They hear some difference, if your record is warped it really helps a little. I grew up in the 70s and 80s before the vinyl resurgence and saw many hi-end systems while they were playing. Never saw one. I'm not saying they're a scam but, it seems they came out after the vinnyl resurgence.

Ooo, a Noble records record weight. Nice... 🎶👍😁 Everything you just said is why I use one. I use it on my direct drive Technics GR because it’s got enough torque for an actual weight, but certain turntables are better off with a compression based one. I do notice tighter bass and it couples the record flat to the platter, especially with warped records. For people into gear, it’s definitely kinda cool looking too. lol

Absolutely anything that can stop the Slippage between the platter and the Vinyl will definitely help at the Minimum with Consistent Speed and can take a Small amount of warp (Very Small) but everything that improves the playing surface will have a bit of improvement so not a waste of money!

They also add rotating mass to the platter. Thus supposedly dampens any microchanges to the rotation speed. Is it worth paying for that? Probably not. But do I like my record weight? Yep. Not because of any reason other than I think it looks cool.

Since the 80s I have been using weights to dampen any vibration of the loose record just resting on a turntable. Imagine a thin disc piece of plastic just loosly by your ear then run your nails across it it will vibrate through the whole piece of plastic. Hold the plastic firmly by your ear with your hand there will be no resonance by vibrations. Doing tests it still runs at a precise 33rpm. What I hear when playing a weighted record is the track & nothing else. It's fuller & precise & 40 years on I have a new set up, a rega 3 turntable & don't fear putting a weight on it as no fluctuation of speed or spindle exertion just like my previous turntable that lasted 25 years using one without problems. If you can't hear the difference fine but I can & I only spent about £60 on one. Let's be honest anybody with sense if they cared about hifi would not play a warped record on it. REPLACE WITH A NEW COPY.

If you have a good tone arm, it is going to track a record much better than a cheaper one. I find a 2 or 3 thousand dollar turntable (with a 500$/600$ tone arm) does not show the sound of a warped record near as much as a cheaper turntable. The best example would be on 78 RPM records. Some have a little edge warp, others are a little off center. Some have both. Think about it, move your finger up and down like it is a tone arm riding up and down on a warped record. Now take that finger, and at the same time move it right to left like it is tracking an off center record. Both at the same time, it will actually shake. A good tone arm will track that, and you may hear it, but on a slightly warped LP, you won't hardly hear a thing. You should still start looking for a non-warped copy.

I have about four records that are warped so bad it effects the sound. I might get one of these but an affordable stabilizer. So basically if you have an entry level turn table all you will notice is warped records will sound like they aren't warped. I guess im covered once i get a stabilizer. I have an Audio Technica LP120, Have had it for about 4 years and like it.

I find that apart from helping with warp issues, I get noticeable tighter base and better dynamics. I think this may be also due to the fact that the records don't slip when spinning. Probably best to use lighter weights on a transcription deck and heavier on a direct drive, for example a vintage AR-XA can't really handle any extra weight at all and in most cases makes the record sound worse. This is very rare though, and for the vast majority of turntables this won't happen.
@NickP333
@NickP333 4 жыл бұрын
giuseppe ciabatti Yeah, they’re not snake oil. If your system is resolving enough, it definitely tightens up the bass and, as you said, even improves dynamics and even the overall soundstage. I’ve got 2 systems, one of em all vintage gear with an AR XA that I use a compression based one instead of a weight because of it’s suspension.

Janet Owens Because those two words are true. The HiFi store I used to go to gave me one to try out years ago, and it absolutely worked, so I held onto it. One point that you did not cover is that not every turntable can use a record weight or clamp. You should not put a record weight on a turntable without first checking out if your turntable can handle the added stress of the weight on the belts or bearings. You should check with the manufacturer of your specific turntable what the tolerance level is if any. For example, I have a Mofi Ultradeck and I purchased the weight sold specifically for that turntable. The puck weighs 495 grams and is optimized for mid-to-high-mass platters (approximately 5 lbs and higher) which mine is. You are correct that if you have a less expensive turntable, you probably shouldn't use a weight. Those TT's have low tolerances and can probably be damaged by using a weight. If your turntable can tolerate a weight, you may (but not guaranteed) get vibration damping, flatter records on the platter, and reduced wow & flutter. Again, you may experience those benefits. Paired with my system, I definitely hear a tighter and stronger bass with the weight than without. But then again, I have invested in my system and I have a high end cartridge on my turntable. I would say check to see if you can return the weight in case you can't tell the difference, check with the manufacturer of the turntable to make sure your model can handle a weight and which one, look to see if you have a system that will demonstrate those subtle differences that these type of accessories will provide.

No. Generally with most if not all belt drives it's the bearing you'd have to worry about, and most if not all are plenty sturdy enough to deal with the weight. The better your system, the more you'll hear the difference.

It doesn’t have to do with the area. Buffalo has always been my favorite animal, I read when I was a kid that out west, when a storm came, the buffalo is the only animal that will run towards the storm and face it head on to get through it quicker. All the other animals run from the storm. It’s just kinda the mantra.

Noble Records thats a way cooler meaning than anything you could of told me from history. One of the first videos I ever seen of yours you were talking about your wife getting you a bon iver record and how much that meant to you and I think that had to of been a huge moment of you saying idc what I gotta do but I’m gonna stop doing these jobs I hate and do what I love and it’s that passion that seeps through all your content. Your content is very just chill and fun and also extremely educational to collectors and you never come off like that high fidelity record shop elitist. But that story of the bon iver record hits home to me because I left a job of ten years when my wife was 8 1/2 months pregnant to start my own ebay business and without my wife having my back 10000% I couldn’t of done it so I can relate. But also the story of the Pearl Jam record and how it pulled you through tough times musics amazing in the way it can do that. Keep the content coming man it’s always great

I have an Audio Technica AT 120 X USB. Tracking weight is 2.2 grams. After I spun my first disc, I could notice an increased bass response and a more "open" sound. I think the reason that I hear an improved sound is because the stylus tracks the grooves better. (2.2 grams is very light!) My TT is a direct drive, so I don't worry about the added weight. I don't know about a belt driven TT, but I should think, if you have one, it should be no problem. In answer to your question, I would say yes. Stay well.

High potential for snake oil capitalising on the rich who have no other life-goals than to liquidate their cash. Is there no mention of the precision needed for the spindle hole diameter and centre to be 101% accurate? Any off-centre placement of the weight or clamp will cause issues in the balanced spinning of the platter and record. Here's a cheap hack: get a hockey puck!! Find the centre & drill a hole with your friend's drill press. The dense rubber is not magnetic or statically charged, it bears some weight that can be shaved with a file, it can have the crest of your favourite hockey team, it costs $2 CAD at your local sports store.
