Bit of a lore correction - it seems that often a Space Marine can use their power armour without the pack, just with alot of difficulty. I was referencing the scene from Pharos when the Night lords removed an Ultramarines power pack and it made him fall over, stuck in his own armour, and easy to capture. So maybe the writers have different opinions of how it works

My head cannon is that as with every machinery when power source us damaged thers a chance the mechanisms will lock in place, that's how I explain the diferent situations, a space marine can move with unlocked not powered armor but if the armor shortcircuits and locks it becomes nearly impossible to move the weight and power thru the armors machinery

@mattor300 there is a situation where armour does lock. Normally SM armour doesn't ever lock its not something that's mechanically it can do. However... It is worth noting that space marines will still be able to move in the armor without the power back,but they will be considerably slower because they actually would have to carry the weight of the armor without all the servos helping. We see it in knights of macragge where the main cast of characters arrive on a feudal world and because of a warp siphoning their armors are often underpowered.

They don't get paralyzed, they can move in the armor but they're carrying the weight of the armor rather than the suit doing it. Term armor has it worse off. They need a larger pack which is covered by an armored cowl-- that hump that goes up behind the head-- but only has half the life time despite having twice the fuel. Remember, IF you maintain it correctly, it goes forever, but that's if you have someone regularly checking and feeding it fuel. Otherwise, it runs for *12 hours* then shuts off. If shot and damaged-- not even destroyed-- it shuts off to prevent explosion and the wearer needs to attempt to lift three times as much weight as they would with standard suits. Put another way, if you shoot the backpack dead on term armor, they're stalled near permanently.
@Nempo13
@Nempo13 3 ай бұрын
@@gigaus0 They tossed out that lore a long time ago. Long before the fall off Cadia they had an STC found with better pack tech. Why? Because they thought it was dumb that the elites were so limited and they wanted Terminators to be depicted as fighting for 3 days without rest. The authors GW use are not well versed in the lore, and many have extreme biases (half the Heresy writers hated the Wolves and Scars, Wolves got turned into bipolar idiots and Scars got sidelined over and over again) so unless it is something mentioned in multiple books and repeated in codexes, check the author's other books. If they wrote the Wolves as Idiots or the Scars as flippant...you can safely assume the author knows less lore than you do after an hour wiki dive.

Honestly they've retconned a lot. The ball things on the top sides are thrusters now, so technically a normal space marine backpack could be considered a jetpack. This is not true. The armour might no longer be powered, but the space marine would just wear it like a typical human wears a medieval suit of armour. Yes, it would require more effort to bear that weight, but they’d still do it. See Nick Kyme’s Knights of Macragge as an example. Something on the planet prevents all tech from working. The Ultramarines are forced to bear the weight of their armour, but they’re plenty strong enough to manage it fine while they go about their business. 😊

I am not sure about the paralyzed part chief, The first thought that comes to mind is that sargent from Dawn of war 1 trailer the second thought that comes to mind is the power armor used by thunder warriors, they did not power the lower body and they were still mobile granted they were still not space marines. To my knowledge, space marines are really fast contrary to the misconception that because they are in heavy armour so they must be slow, the reason as to why is probably because there armours are power by the backpack, granted they will probably be slower yet still effective if they loose power. Edit: so apperently in 'Blades of Democleas' ultramarines lost the ability to move their armor after a EMP detanation, so there is creedence to the idea, how ever there are other books that says the otherwise as well like in Dark Imperium where a nova marine was moving while his armor is depowered.

I think you would design it so that the armor itself can be emergency removed by the Marine should it become "immobilized". @Goldenkitten1
@Goldenkitten1 3 ай бұрын
You'd think. But I suppose engineering the armor in that way could be a major weak point. If the armor can easily be shed in pieces I'd be worried that a smart enemy who knows that could attack the joints where it comes apart and either hit them with armor piercing shells or just straight up peel pieces off with a melee weapon.

The funny thing is that if that IS a fusion reactor, it is MASSIVELY overkill for the limits that the marines themselves have. Per kilogram of material used in fusion, a million plus kilograms of oil, coal, or natural gas is used. That is a LOT. And it's most certainly WAY above anything we see the Marines having use for. So you could probably make it smaller and put it into the armor.

This comment doesn't make sense, since we have no reference for how large a reactor needs to be to process any given quantity of material. It's kind of like if you looked at a nuclear power plant and said, "That's overkill. That building could contain enough uranium to power all civilisation a million times over." Which as we all know, isn't how it works. The actual core is a tiny part of the overall structure and it's required systems.

No; lore differs on this matter. But generally speaking, space marines are also have incredible physical strength. The true value of the marine is in their genetic enhancement. While some authors use the power pack destruction as a lore device, the broad consensus is that the marine would be able to move in standard power armour in the same lumbering sluggish way a medieval knight would. Armor can normally still be walked believe it or not. Not only is this shown in some novels, but a GW approved videogame also showed in cinimatic that a Marine on a command bridge was walking without a pack. It's not much enhanced, and some writings have been said to say there's a limited amount of power still stored on board the armor it's self. But if we go by the averages of depictions, what is confirmed is that most can still get around without a pack. Perhaps in another novel past where a Marine fell over when the pack was popped off, it's the rather sudden changes of weight and ease of use that caught them off guard and didn't make adaption quick enough to catch themselves.

Honestly this gives me a massive idea You know how you might have thought « aren’t bolters massively overkill and inefficient vs those trash enemies like gaunts and what not »? Well what if they connected a gauntlet mounted laspistol (or two or three fuck it double barrel wrist mounted laspistols) to the marine’s wrists directly They would likely barely drain the power pack even after continued use, wouldn’t be much of an inconvenience, and they would be massively useful at dealing with mobs of fodder enemies from a distance faster than the marine would dispatch them in melee; and without wasting any bolts. So now bolts can be used against foes that warrant them.

paralysis is true only for regular human like sister of battle or inquisitor. For a space marine, the lost of the power pack reduce slightly is mobility at best. But he lost also all support systems of the suit

The Emperor's Children don't use powered armour. They just need a power source for their sex toys. You need SERIOUS wattage behind a magic wand after you've been through all that shit.

Micro Fusion reactors are super special for the Imperium, rarely found outside of elite use cases like this. The Imperial Guard would love to have them, but are stuck burning fuel to power most of their vehicles and heavy weapons. Though the quirky ability to slowly charge small arms with the sun helps. For the Tau, micro-fusion reactors are basic mass produced tech, which allows them to be issued to every squad to instantly recharge their weapons, hence why power hungry kit like railguns and pulse-rifles pose no logisitacal issues to them.

so if you can jump a group of Marines from behind and hit their backs with enough fire quickly enough, then you've essentially paralyzed or half-paralyzed them well enough to give a fighting chance of you surviving the encounter

Honestly, it would be a huge tactical disadvantage to have a power pack when neutralized, will render your soldier immobile. If this were true, TAU would systematically target their power packs, so would chaos space marines, Eldar etc. The galactic word would get around that goes something like this "Humanity's finest? Just shoot that massive power pack they are wearing. Easy Peasy" Except orks and tyranids.

Space Marines are technically immortal & can lived for many millennias so long as they don't get killed off in battle. And with that Power Pack they can extend their life & survive even longer than without it. That Power Pack afterall powers up their Powered Armor, Weapons, Equipments, & it also functions as a Life Support System during long campaigns, long missions, or even during emergency situations. So yeah, that's what it's useful for.

Thanks for the info! On a side note, In the newest trailer for WH40K Space Marine 2, The Bulwark class is shown to have an ability icon that resembles A Power Pack and also has a number 3 above it, meaning it could have multiple charges, I wonder what that could possibly mean as an ability, any ideas?

Actually, the back pack IS a jet pack. The two spheric/tubular parts on each side are in fact thrusters for Zero-Gravity combat. Yes, Space Marines also fight in the void when needed.

so what's the point of them having super human strength if tvey can't move the armor? why not just have a bunch of normal humans in that same armor it would be a lot more convenient.
@zzzzzzzzzzzzzz1984
@zzzzzzzzzzzzzz1984 14 күн бұрын
they are strong enough to move the armor on its own it would be like a normal human trying to move around in a heavy suit of armor, but when the armor is active it is extremely responsive due to the black carapace, it becomes light as a feather for the marine wearing it and due to the added mass of the suit and its strength makes the marine that much more deadly, imagine getting hit by a football player, now imagine getting hit by a football player driving a tank, that's the difference

They actually are mini jetpacks as well. According to lore on power armour published by GW themselves, they can he used as thrusters in zero G. And they can move in unpowered power armour, just not in unpowered terminator armour. Do vetter research, MK.

If you can trap a space marine once the power pack is destroyed, that means there is no way to mechanically disengage the armor from the inside. That's exactly the kind of tragic oversight I'd expect from the Imperium.
