What's Wrong With This 1986 BMW 535i E28? 300k Miles

Today at the shop I look over a 1986 BMW 535i E28! It has over 300k miles!

Thanks guys, for the shoutout. And what an honor to have a shark in your shop!! The floating sensor in the coolant reservoir goes bad very often( reed-contact in the sensor). I had an e30 323i 1986 for 12 years and I had to change this sensor twice (oem) in the time I owned it. It's the same sensor as in the e30. Good luck and please make some videos on the repair of this shark.

I thought they had an expansion tank,rather than a radiator. The e28s definitely have an expansion tank. You check the coolant level on the expansion tank. What did you mean?

Wow this brings back so many memories. I owned an 85 325e, same color “Dolphin Grey”. Loved it!!! That seemed to be great find for whoever owns it. That 1985 is what got me into BMW. I would love to own an 80’s 535 to compliment my 2012 535. Keep up the great work especially with the vlogs. Can’t wait to see it completed.

Yay! 1980s Bimmer work! I'm glad to see you working on some vintage stuff (you need to get to Selena's E30! and your E24!). So many independent shops won't touch anything older than an E46. Heads-up: check the banjo bolts on the cam oiler!

I just remembered I had the same problem with the shifter in my 325e. Unfortunately not knowing enough about it I thought it was normal based on the age. The info you put out is so valuable, more than you can imagine. Keep up the great work on this channel as I will stay subscribed and looking forward to the content. Just wish you were still on the east coast. If you know someone I can trust in the Atlanta area for my 2012 535i I would appreciate that info. Thanks.

TODAY I had my '88 535is smogged (in CA no less) and it passed easily... With 0ver 400k on the clock. Tell me another car that has achieved the same.

Could you please explain your air filter comment? Air/fuel mixture is controlled by air-flow sensing component (usually a MAF) and O2 sensors. A restricted airflow will kill performance, yes, but not affect mixture--the computer will set the mixture for the volume of air inhaled. Yes?

Yes, so far it's the Toyota Camry with 226000 miles on the factory struts. And still have life in them. I swap out front struts at 221000 and put in 223000 mile struts from my parts car. And the ride is smooth 👍🤘

I'm from England. I own a 1987 525 super eta. It could do with some TLC. I've currently waiting g on the garage for the MOT. Runs great,just a little tired in places,you know,worn seats,cracked dash,m tech kit is lose in areas,like the front bumper. The paint is worn in some places but not bad at all for a 31 year old car. How much do you think I could get for it? I'm thinking at least £3000. The fact that it will have an MOT,shows its road worthy. If I got the paint done,I reckon quite a lot more because it runs excellently and has plenty of torque left.

Im not used to no leaks anymore since the e46 I just got only has 57k mi (my first non 5 series BMW) . On my 93 525i before my neighbors complained and I ended up donating it since the center support bearing went out and water leaked while it was parked so mold grew inside, at 319k still started everytime & had the original engine and tranny (replaced the rear main seal and the leaks stopped it got weird 😲). Hoping for an e28 again soon since I'm bored of e39s & this e46 is more of a commuter.

Nice car but what's up with the bumpers? Looks like Euro bumpers inside US bumper sleeves or something, weird. Those US bumpers always make me cringe... takes the whole model out of proportion (same with US E12, E21 and early E30). This looks better but why not go for the whole euro bumper conversion? Own a 1985 525i myself (European model with 2.5L M30, never sold in the US), also Delphin grey. Bought it for peanuts years ago and I use it almost daily. It is being restored now, welding of floor pans and front strut towers almost done, after that its rusty front wings and a few doors will be replaced with good ones and finally it is going to get a fresh paint job.
