Welcome back to Study Ball. Now that the 2024 NFL season has started, I will say this: after Week 1 in the NFL, of all the years I’ve been analyzing, this is probably the biggest overall struggle for quarterbacks that I’ve seen. There were a lot of struggles. Maybe it’s because we have a lot of young guys, or maybe it’s because they didn’t get a lot of preseason time-whether young or veteran guys-but it just wasn’t great quarterback play across the NFL. This leaves me with a lot of questions moving forward about who these guys are going to be, and what these offenses are going to look like throughout the year.
This week, I’ve been running around and traveling since last Wednesday, so I just got home. As a result, a couple of Study Balls are coming out late this week. The first one is going to be on Deshaun Watson, a veteran who really struggled this weekend and has been struggling since he got to Cleveland. A lot of people have questions-I have questions-about who Watson is at this point in his career and what he’ll be throughout the rest of his career.
We’re going to look into his game this past weekend, some of the things I saw, and some of the things that are really concerning to me. It led me down a path of what I think we’re seeing. I’m not in the room, so I don’t know the reasons or his thought process on everything, but just by watching year after year, throw after throw, I pulled out 19 different clips from this game. There were even more I could have pulled that showed some mental and physical issues with Deshaun Watson. We’ll go through those 19 clips, and I’ll walk you through what I’m thinking and seeing with Watson, but more importantly, the questions I have that I want to get answered throughout the rest of the season. #deshaunwatson #nfl #clevelandbrowns

And this is exactly why Flacco excelled in this offense. Guys are open, but it requires good post-snap assessment, and I think Deshaun just has not had enough game reps in the last three years to be efficient in the system. I have a feeling he'll end up being decent if he can string together 6-8 consecutive games in a row, but with the various off the field issues and the pressure of the contract, I'm not sure if we'll ever see his progress come to fruition in Cleveland. It's sad; Browns fans deserve better.

@@John.Christopher he quite literally called out Duke Johnson for not playing through injury, called out Kevin towards the end of the year for the play calling, and called out the GM AB. PLUS he quit on the team in week 18. Myles Garrett and Denzel were hurt and still played, he sat out. PLUS he requested a trade and bid a farewell to the team before the offseason even happened. He’s balling now but he wouldn’t be doing that in CLE. He had 4 years to show it and didn’t do it consistently once. Just because Watson may not be the answer doesn’t make Baker the answer because he clearly wasn’t.

I think Deshaun needs more spacing from his receivers as well. He might not like the route combinations or he might find it difficult to pull the trigger because the routes are seemingly running into each other. Even though I think Stefanski is running these routes to help Deshaun with quick open dink and dunk passes. Another thing that throws a wrench into the gears is that the Browns receivers aren't all that great at creating separation. It's all a very tight window for success with all this in mind and when Deshaun does hit someone in the hands or the digits of their jersey the receivers are dropping the ball. Looking at the playbook from Deshauns days in Houston, his receivers had speed and there were so many down the field posts/go routes. I know this might sound stupid but even on Madden I'm running the Browns playbook and so many of the combinations run into each other very closely on a small patch of grass. I'm seeing a lot of these same combinations in the all 22

Poor per-snap reads, cannot see and diagnose the field, cant get thru his progressions, doesn't have the arm talent anymore, and lost a couple steps athletically so he cant escape and scramble like he use to. He was always a guy that relied on his athleticism, and now that he needs to start using his mind and football smarts.......he lacks that dept and cannot do it. He is washed up. Hope the Browns can move away from him.

JuJu Smith-Schuster missed ONE season when he willingly sat out over a contract dispute and that essentially ended his career. He came back the next season and was a shadow of the player he had been before his missed season, and he quickly ended up being relegated to a rotational/backup player. Now he's a nobody on the Chiefs bench. He had one target in the Chiefs' opening game and zero receptions. Missing just one season made him go from one of the most dynamic players in the league to a meaningless bench rider. Over the last three years, Watson missed ALL of the 2021 season. He played just 6 out of 17 games in 2022 (and the 11 games he missed were at the START of the season, so he literally sat out for nearly two full seasons in a row and played just 6 total NFL games from the end of the 2020 season to November of 2022). He played just 6 out of 17 games last season after getting injured. So he's missed nearly 2.5 of the last 3 seasons. AND HE IS A QUARTERBACK! Not a running back/receiver like Schuster. The most difficult position to play in the league by far. He is basically a rookie QB at this point. He has missed so much football that I have a hard time believing that he will EVER be able to return to the player he was in Houston. And I am about as certain as anyone could possibly be that if he were to get suspended again and/or injured and miss a significant number of games this season, that his career will be over. I'm talking purely from an "ability to play" standpoint. Guys at less important/difficult positions sit out for one season and they come back washed. Watson has missed nearly 2.5 of the last 3 seasons and people think he's somehow going to be "the old Watson" again? I don't see it. And I was worried about this all the way back when the Browns signed him based solely on the fact that he missed just ONE season (2021). I was instantly thinking about the Schuster situation. Then the snake Goodell overrode the "independent arbitrator's" ruling and suspended Watson for 11 games instead of her recommended 6. I wish I could go back and find the comments I posted online back then because I said repeatedly at that time that Goodell was HOPING that suspending Watson 11 games would end his career. To punish both Watson AND the Browns, because the NFL and the owners were furious at Haslam for giving him that fully-guaranteed contract. Goodell wanted to extend Watson's time away from the field for as long as possible to do the most damage to his playing ability, and he unquestionably succeeded in accomplishing that. Then Watson broke his shoulder last season and that just compounded the disaster. Like I said before, I'm confident that if Watson misses more time this season due to injury or a suspension, his career is over. At this point, the Browns need to use that poison pill clause in his contract and cut their losses right now if they can. If Watson didn't disclose this latest accuser to them in writing...whether she is telling the truth or not, she could absolutely be making her entire claim up and I still don't care...then they need to use that as their excuse to void his guarantees and get out from under this while they still can. It will destroy our season and put us right back on the disgusting QB carousel, but that is better than being saddled with a QB who can't play for the next three seasons (including the rest of this one) and is preventing us from even signing someone better because he's getting paid 30% of our cap.

@@kurtwarnerqbc The weird thing is when looking at the plays highlighted on the video, a lot of those seem to be easy looks if he read pre-snap correctly, which looked to be Josh Allen's issue as well under Dorsey but because we saw players getting open for Allen and we see players getting open for Watson, it is really hard to "blame the system." I hope this doesn't come off as a knock against either but too many times, we get "success" confused with "skill," and like Allen, there may be a "skillset" deficiency, if that makes sense. Dorsey and Stefanski might need to have an honest look at the playbook and see what really works best for Watson's skillset. The second weird thing is their backup is probably the best play-action QB in the league, based on EPA/Play. Don't know what to make of that situation.

So at like 29:30, not making excuses for the guy and great breakdowns, is it fair to expect that play to work. The time it would have taken watson to shove that ball straight to the guy showing numbers might have not have been enough before 11 gets to him. At that same time watson has to get it over the two guys shoving straight at him. Idk if that was a play he had a ton to work with

I was at the game and felt like there were plays missed…. I can’t believe what I’m watching putting on a Cleveland Browns uniform zaps every qb besides Flacco of talent… seeing baker now vs who he was on our team it’s night and day… the shit we are saying about Deshaun now is what we were saying about baker…. It’s sad to see it really is

Thank you for the excellent content. As an avid Browns fan it's my opinion that #4 doesn't even know what routes his receivers are running a lot of the time. Like he was dumb to begin with and checked out mentally when he was guaranteed almost a quarter of a billion dollars.

Kurt Warner is a great QB and very knowledgeable. As for the Browns, overpaying Watson and throwing Mayfield under the bus is all on their GM, Berry.

Great analysis. So much for the junk comments like "O-line sucked". This is not a franchise quarterback and will never be again. Cleveland should take the L, bench him, and make Winston the QB number 30 in that never-ending list.

Is this THE Kurt Warner? When I grew up, there was a kid down the street whose entirely family claimed they were related to you or your wife or something. I kinda always chalked it up to him just trying to be cool. Well he was killed in an accident when i was in highschool, but I’ve always been a Kurt Warner fan just because of him. I don’t even care if he was lying, but at this point in my life I’d like to know if it was true at all. It was definitely convincing as kids so who knows. Even his mom claimed it true, but maybe she was just teasing us kids. Cheers man, stumbled upon this because I’m a browns fan, so what a small world. I was too young to remember you other than my friend and seeing games on tv and us screaming “we know him! We are famous”

@kurtwarnerqbc You expertly broke down 2 plays and reads but please explain the 2 consecutive penalties that were called immediately at the line of scrimmage at @29:20 and @30:30 What did they do wrong. It looks too the naked eye that refs are just randomly hurting the teams to kill drives. What's your take, opinion, or knowledge on these 2 because I see nothing wrong

When you don't want to play football, but are getting paid 230 million bucks... that's what I see. Indecisive, no trust in his receivers, looks like he doesn't know the system and hasn't put in the work... He's had 3 injury and suspension plagued seasons in Cleveland... the fans aren't happy, and I'm guessing the players aren't either. The Haslams should cut ties, admit they made a mistake, and extend Jameis Winston... after all, just look at those empty seats.
