i have combined adhd. someone told me recently, "no offence, but i heard that people with adhd are normally hyperactive and always have extra energy. however, you always seem tired and low energy". this wasn't because this person was curious, rather doubtful of my diagnosis. i know it's not something to be upset about, but it made me sad having to explain myself. i also learned to mask and have past trauma to deal with, so it is only normal that my adhd presents itself differently. just like everyone elses.

I think the reason ADHD is sometimes misdiagnosed for bipolar disoder is the "combined" type. If you dont fall into one or the other- and you gravitate to highs and lows of attention- that makes sense it would be confused. just as inattentive would be confused with depression.

What if you think that you have ADHD but don't want to get a diagnosis? Through my driving lessons I've noticed that all of the innatentive symptoms apply to me perfectly. I've asked my family members and they all share the exact same experience when it comes to driving or paying attention in general, especially in school and during conversations. We all zone out, miss obvious details, day dream to avoid boredom, ... The reason I don't want to get a diagnosis is because I'm afraid of wasting the doctor's time. I'm also scared that the doctor will think I'm just another one of those Tik Tok gen Z people who thinks that having ADHD is cool. On top of that, I'm an overly anxious hypochondriac so it might be possible that I'm indeed just another Gen Z person who imagines stuff. But no matter if I have ADHD or not: I don't feel comfortable going to the doctor's with it. And I mean, what do you do with the diagnosis anyway? Does it even help you anywhere in life or is it just there?

the thing with adhd is that nearly everyone experiences these symptoms from time to time, but those with adhd experience it so frequently and severely that it impacts every aspect of their lives (work, study, personal life, relationships). I'd been struggling with these symptoms for as long as I've remembered, but I was also scared to see a psychiatrist to get diagnosed. But it got to a point where my life felt like it was falling apart because of my struggles in work and my personal life. There are also a number of reasons why you might be experiencing the symptoms too (mental health issues, trauma, other conditions, things like iron deficiency with inattentiveness especially) - but it's up to the psychiatrist/s to decide I guess. It sucks, but it isn't uncommon for people to try a few different doctors before getting one that isn't an absolute prick. I was fortunate enough to get an understanding one straight up. If you're struggling with it, I would highly recommend seeing a doctor. The purpose of getting diagnosed (with anything) is so that you can get treatment - medication, therapy, other strategies, that are specifically catered to the disorder. Most of the people I know with adhd are using meds and it helps us to function like normal human beings during the day, so that we're not crippling under the pressure of our own chaotic brains
@withyoctopus Жыл бұрын
I'm 37. TikTok gave me the idea that I had ADHD. And it was right. Every professional I had ever seen had missed it. Your doctor gets paid for the evaluation, no matter the outcome. And your insurance wants you to get diagnosed because non-treated ADHD is way more expensive in the long run.

medicine in UK is so terrible, we moved here last year because of the war, and i waited for an appointment with my gp for months ( I've talked to my teacher about it and she said that once she waited for an appointment for 14 MONTHS - GOSH) and when i finally get my appointment turned out that I can't get any medicine without my parents permit (even tho my gp said that i have " an emergency") coz im not 16 , and my parents of course not gonna allow that because "it is drugs, what's next? heroin??", so now the only option i have is to wait until 16 and then take care of myself by myself. even tho i should wait just a month, I'm still feel so sad and devastated (?) that if not my parents i could have feel good now, but instead everyday is such a suffering for me and i can do nothing. it's so hard for me to do anything, even my hobbies, so i literally just waisting my time. feel of helplessness that i can't get back the time that i spent in my bed just laying there in the dark room, alone, for years, nit even eating, that's so hurt. i'm thinking about euthanasia, because i just literally lost my life, my best years, and i dont know wt to do, i can't study i can't work, feel so pathetic. don't want anything good or bad for me or anybody else, just wanna end it, if not euthanasia, then something else. I’m the hyperactive type of ADHD, and because I’m female, I went under the radar until my mid 20s. People just thought I was insecure when I was brawling, fighting a lot or ‘driven’ by compulsion when I was restless and impulsive and lazy when I wouldn’t focus on studying and kept performing well enough to pass classes but not as well as I could have performed. Because of my gender, I was forced into a social role that I tried to fit in and that meant a lot of coping mechanisms and hiding until I burned out. I sought professional help and was diagnosed immediately, I checked all boxes for hyperactive ADHD right off the bat. It’s been a rough journey since then but knowing what the problem is, i at least know what I’m dealing with and it’s less scary now.

I took the mini test and these were my results: Impulsivity - 1 Seems about accurate. I'm a pretty anxious person so I tend to subconsciously avoid doing things that may cause me stress (although I'll still get stressed anyway). Inattention - 5 Focusing in school was extremely difficult for me. I also sometimes have trouble with conversations face to face because my mind wanders off somewhere. Physical Hyperactivity - 3 I do get antsy sometimes but considering how I can sit at my computer for hours at a time it's not that bad. Mental Hyperactivity - 6 I really did have a lot of trouble sleeping for the longest time due to this. I have found a routine that helps me sleep but it's not a cure-all method. Emotional Dysregulation - 3 I would say I'm a relatively numb person most of the time, although things that I'm passionate about can bring out my emotions quite a bit. Sensory Sensitivity - 5 This makes sense now because in school sometimes I'd try to focus on my work but I'd take so much notice to the people talking around me which made it impossible for me to focus. It's also a reason why sometimes I get extremely anxious in public because I notice all the people talking around me. Come to think of it, I used to be scared of loud noises like fireworks when I was younger too. Forgetfulness - 4 I often find myself getting distracted by things and then forgetting about what I was previously doing almost immediately. Like I might refill my bottle of water and leave it on the counter to go pet my cats or something and I'll return to my room without retrieving my water. I also tend to forget about holidays and such.

How interesting. When I was diagnosed, I was diagnosed with ADD. I had no idea that was even a thing. I always thought having adhd meant being hyper and annoying like a little kid and it finally made sense why I flunked out of college.. twice. If only I had gone sooner! But by the time I looked for help, I had no support system left, and I was struggling with anxiety and depression. Turns out I walked in thinking I was just depressed and a little anxious only to find out I had pretty severe depression, ADD, both generalized and social anxiety which were apparently pretty moderate to server AND bipolar disorder-which came as a REAL shock. It really puts into perspective just how little we're taught about mental illnesses. I thought bipolar disorder meant you were unhinged and violent. Nope! Just like to spend all my money and randomly quit my job book a trip and suddenly shut down when I realized I did something stupid. 😅 loved this video really shined a new light on my late diagnosis.

Thank you, this has been very helpful for me. I've been having a suspicion of me having ADHD. I used to know very little about it and didn't not really care much, but now that I'm older (13 years old) I understand what is ADHD and how to identify it, I've been actually quite scared to tell my parents, don't get me wrong they are very kind and nice to me and also my biological ones, but they say that I don't have any symptoms of ADHD and that it simply happens to everyone, in fact today i was going to the Mosque with my Father, his car has a little tablet attached which you can put on Google maps and other stuff, then i saw in that tablet a KZbin video in Arabic called "ADHD after tests". I know my Father does NOT have ADHD and when I asked him why he put that video he was clearly nervous and panicked, I personally don't know what's happening, I'm too shy and scared to tell an Adult and I'm starting to think my Parents are lying to me, even if they did I still love them because I know they only want to protect me, but currently I want to research more about this ADHD, also I found by this video I am a Combined type. I've been bullied before, A LOT, like I was basically the disliked person in the class and I didn't know why since I didn't know what was ADHD, Right know I don't know what to do...

One of the things that made accepting my diagnosis harder was that so many people I expressed my concerns to would hit me with the “you don’t look like you have adhd” and “don’t make excuses”. Thant was hard enough for my impostor syndrome riddled mind, but the fact that close Friends and family didn’t even bother to think about the magnitude of growth I had to go to, the months of research and critical thinking, and instead chose to reveal their ignorance. I’ve come a long way, but thinking back on this still stings.

Something I’ve realized is that I mask so much I sometimes don’t notice I do things or feel certain ways so when I am presented with these questionnaires I need more explanation and examples of what it’s asking than the simple question it presents. So it seems as time goes on I’m MORE ADHD than before but really I’m just learning more about myself that I didn’t understand before.
@klltsun_2576 Жыл бұрын
I remember when Im taking questionnaires and I get unsure how to answer. Now I copy-pasted a list of symptoms and whenever I notice I'm displaying one I add a point to the symptom, and hopefully I can keep this up for the needed 6 months. I also learned about how someone's answers can be affected cause they have a coping mechanism, like "do you usually forget planned events" and someone answers "no", but turns out its because they make lists or write it on a calendar, and if they didnt cope like that they would be forgetting events a lot. So yeah same, I'm learning more and noticing more instead of forgetting how much I forget things and have trouble paying attention

I was first diagnosed with depression by a different doctor and it never really worked out. Antidepressants never worked and I never really felt "depressed" just couldn't focus. Word were kind of blurry as I'd daze out. I'm going to try to open up about my hair pulling too. We're considered "gifted and talented" in school but recently it's been getting more difficult to focus and absorb information since now its pure reading and I'm at one of the periods where I just day dream all the time. My older brother also has it but he's hyperactive impulsive apparently. He always had to have something moving. So when he got diagnosed I was shocked. We're like polar opposites, he's always talking while I only have periods where I can talk, although I get impulsive like he does im most of the time inattentive. It's nice having a sibling that understands what the heck ADHD is since my brother and mother pushed me to talk.

I have a Masters of clinical rehab and mental health counseling with a recent diagnosis of adult combined type adhd from a neuro psychologist - a word of precaution, do not self diagnosis and do not rely on your own perception of the DSM5 criteria and instead advocate for yourself and utilize your benefits to receive consultation from professionals. ADHD symptoms can also be manifestations of anxiety, autism, depression, bi-polar disorder, substance abuse, learning disorder - etc. Its unbelievably frustrating to be coping with valid symptoms but treatment and counseling will look vastly different depending on the source of the disorder. Wishing you all the best when seeking and finding support, help is out there!

@@valen5188 Meditation helps a lot, and believe me, when people would tell me that I would laugh and think meditation is impossible for me, but that's because I wasn't trying to do the wrong kind. Instead of trying to set aside a time to "quiet" or try to block out the crazy train of thoughts, set aside time to just let your brain wander wherever it wants to unimpeded. It is extremely therapeutic and I've found that when I do a good job making time for this type of meditation, the problem occurs a lot less at times where it's problematic (like trying to sleep, study, listen to somebody). It's not a 100% cure by any means, but it helps. Also, this doesn't work for me, but has helped some of the people I know with ADHD, grey noise while trying to sleep or study sort of fills the emptiness just enough to where their brain doesn't fill it with thoughts.

When a child, I was diagnosed with hyperactive but now as an adult have been combined. Both as a child and as an adult, I've always struugled with boredom but moreover, lack of focus. It's rhe constant daydreaming. I truly believe stress and chaotic living environments/relationships cause symptoms ro skyrocket. Sleep has always been difficult, which in turn leads to hightened levels of distraction and focus. I had been diagnosed with severe tourettes. I believe it was so bad due to my family dynamic as it was normally a battle zone. In adulthood I've noticed that my "ticks" morph often. Sometimes it's presented rhrough speech, other times hand movements such as rouching my thumb to my fingers rapidly and in an even amount of times. I'm grateful my mom refused medication when I was a kid, but now I wonder if it would have helped as I'm starting to understand the positive effects certain medication can have on a traumatic brain. I had always been highly against medication in general, even over rhe counter, but after a traumatic event last year, I'm taking PTSD meds. There's absolutely no chance I would be here today if it weren't for these pills. I want very much to stop all medication, but I'm simply not there yet. The trauma is far too painful and has hanhed my brain chemistry. PTSD flashbacks are hell on Earth. Just wanting to send hugs to all those struggling through life. You're not alone ❤

My mother and I suspect that I have ADHD. I always doubted it (despite displaying many symptoms) because I have a friend who’s diagnosed with ADHD who’s always hyper, has lots of energy, and is very sociable. I’d been lead to believe that that was the only type of ADHD to have by media and by my friend (not his fault though). If I have ADHD, I’m definitely of the inattentive type and I’m glad this video popped up on my home page. Being questioned about why I’m always daydreaming was what resonated the most with me and I’m now pretty confident that I have ADHD. Im considering seeing a therapist to make sure and maybe I’ll be prescribed medication so that my presumed ADHD is far less detrimental to my ability to function in school

I have suspected that I have ADHD for over a year now, along with a couple of my close friends and a former teacher who also all suspect that I have it at least at a small level. However, through the second half of 2022 and in February 2023 I had been going through some tests with professionals to see if I had a diagnosis. And in the end of all those visits and tests, they just told me that my IQ was pretty high (within the average scale, so not above average) and whatever struggles with symptoms I have wouldn’t give me too much trouble in my life. Like okay, that’s not exactly what I came here to know, I don’t care if they are not gonna be trouble for me (as I’ve long since found ways to stimulate and help myself when I need it, before I even knew what ADHD was). I came here to find out if I have a diagnosis or not! Geez… ( =-= )

"people who identify as male are more likely to be diagnosed with this type" Females and males aren't the same, so when it comes to medical practice you should always look at biological sex and not gender identity. Imagine an androgynous individual comes into the ER with heart pain, dizziness and fatigue. The medical professionals ask their sex and they say the are a man. (heart attack in men and women have different symptoms) The doctors conclude it couldn't be a heart attack because the symptoms do not match up. They are unable to determine the illness and the androgynous individual ends up passing away. Had the patient told the doctors their biological sex then they may not have died. (this relates to the quoted statement because men's and women's brains are not the same and have different compositions, so asking someone their gender identity quite literally does not tell you (almost) anything about their brain chemistry) I have adhd and can't organize my thoughts well so, tldr: Men and women brains are different. Using "gender identity" as a metric for data is as good as using % of people who like pizza because gender identity is completely subjective and can be different no matter your biological sex. PS: Please forgive me for my horrible phrasing (I might have came off wrong) I suck at writing my thoughts down, if you have any questions or arguments please leave them in the replies!

I have ADHD, but I'm honestly not sure which type. I was a VERY hyper, impulsive and headstrong child. I would fidget all the time (still do), I would run around and interrupt people. I was also super impulsive- getting into physical altercations frequently and I also had a bit of a kleptomaniac streak about me. I would steal small items (mostly toys) that I could hide in my closed fists or pockets without notice and take them home with me. These things were often things like toy cars or Lego pieces. On the other hand, nowadays, I feel I fall more into the inattentive type (or maybe I have just gotten better at keeping a reign on my impulses). I daydream, tune out of conversations, forget names and instructions minutes (sometimes even seconds after reading/hearing them). I do still also have random bursts of energy that make me want to flap my hands or make a weird sound or move somehow. I don't know if that is an ADHD thing though.

I work in healthcare. It's kind of sad when I see individuals that want to have something wrong with them. Or a diagnosis with something wrong with them. They think literally something is wrong with them. 🤔 Then you have individuals that don't really have anything wrong with them-. and take medication. We all have emotions. It's how you handle those emotions . We choose to either flatline and show no emotion and don't care about anything. Or sometimes we care too much and let everything us. You have to find the balance between both. Love others and love yourself and others can't love you there's nothing wrong with you it's them. You cannot change people. But you can always change yourself and make yourself a better person.

I was born in 1998, so when I was diagnosed with adhd it was for hyperactivity, that "mellowed out with age" and those medications stopped being given to me because of that, and the old criteria. I just recently visited my psychiatrist and discussed that, and how after doing thorough research myself I'm pretty sure it's still an ongoing thing, now knowing that ADHD doesn't commonly go away on its own. He gave me new medication to improve focus, which is hopefully a step in the right direction. After looking at the video I think I may specifically have combined ADHD, as I think I have pretty much everything listed at different times throughout the day. Inattentiveness, impulsively (especially with money), high energy and also low energy at different times, you get the idea. It's all there, at least it seems that way to me. I think this video will be very helpful when discussing this further with him next month.
