Every so often, a song gets placed on my recording list and I just don't have a choice, as is the case with 3 Doors Down's "Kryptonite". And I am so glad! This song, and music video, are SO AWESOME, and my nerd brain is swimming.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to 3 Doors Down for the first time, performing "Kryptonite” BOTH on Singer and at Bastau.

Brad is the most non-rockstar rockstar I’ve ever seen. In the years I’ve known him on a professional level, not once has he ever mentioned his music or career or even who he is. I assume he knows that I know but it has never been addressed & I have to say, I think that’s the coolest thing. He’s just a guys guy. One of the kindest, most soft spoken people I’ve met. He would be a great person to have on to discuss music purely due to that fact.

Those people (non-rockstar rockstars) are few and far between. I live in Nashville and arguably the most famous musician I’ve met was like that. He was a drummer for a multi platinum band for 20 years and works at the liquor store where we both live (and our kids are in the same class). When I went to his house for a dad’s night I saw some artwork on the mantle that looked vaguely familiar but I couldn’t place it. Throughout the night through various stories (and the way people were acting around him) I put together he’s a big name but still have no clue who he is. Later we go into his garage and there are big touring cases with “Goo Goo Dolls” written on them. He sees the look of confusion on my face and I ask him if that’s who he played for. Reluctantly he nods. Dude has played drums on all 7 continents, toured around the world. Works at a liquor store now. Super humble and will list off a ton of musicians who are more talented than him.

@@loberd09 that’s funny cause I’m in the Boro just south of you. Yea, he lives in both our area & when I first met the guy and his wife, I actually thought I recognized his wife from a business I used to run but I can only assume I must have recognized her from some rock magazine or something back in the day when they got married. I’m sure he got a kick out of being ignored and someone trying to place her instead. Lol! Funny part is I didn’t recognize him till long after they had left the shop the first time. We just know each other in passing & only see the couple about once or twice a year but we had a really good talk on lawn care and flooding in both our gravel drives last time he came around. Like I said, super grounded dude. 🤣👍

3 Doors Down has a song called Landing in London, which features Bob Seger. I went to a concert in Michigan back in the day, where it was clear that Brad was prepared to sing the song solo, but was surprised as Bob Seger, a Michigander who regularly had concerts at this venue, walked on stage right as Brad started singing the beginning of what was Seger's line. Brad was clearly flabbergasted while able to still smoothly transition into the duet, and afterwards said that was the best performance of his life. I really wish there had been a recorded version of it. The song is great on it's own, but it was definitely a treat seeing the band play it when they weren't expecting the Seger to show up. Also, unpopular opinion, Henry Cavill is near the bottom of my favorite Superman portrayals list. My favorite Superman is Tyler Hoechlin of Superman & Lois, hands down. He was a breath of fresh air, to my great surprise.

Oh I'm SO excited for this analysis!!! This is my FAVORITE song. Not that I think it is the best song of all time, but something about it has forever cemented itself in my fibers as #1. I look forward to watching your analysis and seeing if I come out with more understanding as to 'why'. Post-viewing edit: I both learned so much (I've never watched the MV, and don't know very much about the history - very cool to learn Brad was a drummer and how that connects to his voice!) from your input and thoughts as well as felt so validated, hearing you also muse about what exactly it IS about his voice that is so...unique. There really is just something about it in this one that gets me like nothing else, and even then, you've done a phenomenal job giving more description to what it is that makes this performance so special. You definitely started with the best one from 3 Doors Down, in my opinion, but a few others that promptly spring to mind: "Here Without You", "When I'm Gone", and "Away From the Sun". As for my Kryptonite... People who think certain music is bad, when it really just isn't for them.

"Of course he's precise, he's a drummer." Excellent observation. The drum part in this song (especially the intro) is a take off of a basic drum rudiment, the ratamacue, which incorporates a triplet in it. The drummer continues to incorporate the triplet in his playing throughout the song. And yes, I am also a drummer. 😂😂

In 2003, Weird Al released his 11th album, Poodle Hat. In the lead up to the release, the track listing got leaked, and fans started speculating about the content of the songs. One of the titles was "Ode to a Superhero", and someone said casually "probably a parody of that Superman song", which was met with a few dozen people asking "which one?" Because by this point, there had been so many top 40 songs about Superman, directly or indirectly, that there wasn't any one in particular that seemed to be the obvious choice. Anyway, it turns out the song was about Spider-Man, and it was a parody of Billy Joel's "Piano Man".

I feel like The X Factor on Brad's voice here is kind of similar to Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20: he's coming from the south, southern impoverished United States. he has really unique insight into how the underbelly of America is functioning, or not functioning as the case may be. reading about the early life of Rob Thomas - and his mother - is a riveting affair, let me tell you! and if we're looking to branch out into this '90s nihilism-core hard rock, we have GOT to begin with the song that started it all, Push, by Matchbox 20

There's a short story by author Robert McCammon called "Night Calls the Green Falcon", written, I believe, in the late 80s, that I feel this music video had to have taken inspiration from. Very similar story about an old forgotten actor who played a superhero back in the day, but now lives in a small crappy apartment, who pulls out and puts on his old costume to protect the young woman who lives next to him who is being stalked by a serial killer, and ends up taking a journey into the city's seedy criminal underbelly. Really good story, the video has differences, but I feel there's no way it's a coincidence it's so similar to that story. Anyways, loved the analysis, Elizabeth, entertaining and informative as always. Cheers!😁

I must say this. I have listened to many reaction/vocal coach analysis videos and never followed them. It always seemed so….idk, just a waste of time. Then I found you. You have made me start listening to music again. Appreciating what it does for me. Your thoughts and explanations are so wonderful. As one viewer said in a comment, you look like a Disney Princess when something you didn’t expect happens. That type of wonder and love are infectious. Thank you for making me appreciate music again.

You Have to listen their song "landing in London" ft Bob Seger. There is something truly special about 3 doors down that sadly got lost to time. But they are still on my list of top 5 favorite bands even after all these years.

I've always been a fan of 3 Doors Down so thank you for this. I just searched your content and I saw a name/group missing that I am sure would interest you. That would be Aaron Lewis either solo or as the vocalist for the band, Staind. 'It's Been A While' would be a great song to start their journey with. I always enjoy your content.

This song came out when I was 11/12 and despite being a massive metalhead and hardcore fan; nothing has changed lmao, I always loved this song. It got overplayed a ton so I think many people nowadays don’t listen to it that often if they were around during its release but it’s fantastic. Well written lyrics that transcend music. Fantastic melody and his singing really is on point for the message the song is trying to get across to the listener. He doesn’t try to overdo it or change things up when he doesn’t need to. Sometimes singing with less intensity or “perfection” during some parts helps the listener feel the singers feelings. All in all, great song.

The Better Life is amazing! For me his voice is engaging because it's so deep South without being fake twangy. There is a radio station (95.5 The Rat in Point Pleasant, NJ) that I could only listen to on my way to or from work. They'd play new stuff before it got very mainstream, if it did at all. They'd play songs from The Better Life and one morning had the guys in the studio. I may have been late to work that day. 😁 Immediately went and bought the CD.
