The best tragedies are the ones where, if maybe something was slightly different, it wouldn't have ended the way it did. But there was no chance of that happening. The mistakes made were too natural, too human, for it to go any other way. The crew was ultimately a group of good people, but goodness doesn't prevent human flaws. A great story.

Such a good exploration of grief. Sometimes you want something or someone to blame to direct your hurt at because it's easier that feeling it because it's almost like drowning 😢😢
@snowpanda73884 ай бұрын
Legitimately made me cry, the way this game explores grief is so painfully real to how it can affect you. The "drowning" in the bottom right of the screen during the loading screen was subtle but it really does feel that way in the pits of grief. One side of you brain yelling at you that it can't be just that and there has to be more but the other half frustrated at yourself for not being able to accept the facts as they are and just deal with things and move on. Absolutely adore this game!

I’ve attended several Handfastings in my long-ass life. It’s a beautiful Pagan ceremony that the couple in question can choose to either renew in a year or they can part ways. And, yes. It is perfectly legal. I remember a specific Handfasting (I might have been fifteen or sixteen at the time) during which I tied a ribbon around the couple’s hands, wished them well and then my Brother, who was right behind me, couldn’t think of anything to say, so he tied their hands and said: “Um… yeah! There you go!” This is probably not going to be funny to anyone else, but it’s stayed with me for about half my life and so I figured I’d share it here. Also my Mother wrote an incredibly beautiful Handfasting song for the couple in question (we knew the son and his mother at the time) and she sang it during their ceremony. 🥂🥂🥂🥂

Maybe I missed it but my one critique would be that there wasn't a definite answer on why no one used a life boat. It seems there was enough time. Just adding a piece of dialogue saying it sunk too quickly would make it definitive.
@UniversalControl-134 ай бұрын
In my opinion in that it doesn't need to. The game is basically about grief and accepting that things are unfair. The ending does pretty well of conveying that. If anything the environmental already give you the clues. I mean how would the small life boats are stack on top of the ship when it sank? Another thing was that they basically lack safety training that lead to the demise of everyone (the most apparent one being that Maria innocently lock the fire escape door). So everyone except Hans probably had no idea what to do in the event of a sinking ship. I mean heck Jessie just decided to patch Thomas right then and there rather than securing an escape route (I get it might have been a big wound but an emergency temp patch could have work in that situation). In conclusion everything is a mess when the explosion happen.
@Irumimiru4 ай бұрын
I think because the storm was too fierce? Even if they were on the lifeboats, storms strong enough to tilt a large boat like that would probably capsize the lifeboats too This is saying the tilt was strong enough to roll a divers bell to the walls and create holes
@Irumimiru4 ай бұрын
Ah- I just got to the part where it said "they got out of the storm" and now I have no idea anymore~
@UniversalControl-134 ай бұрын
@@Irumimiru It's the big hole caused by the exploded boiler. Sinced it's located where sea water is directly outside the water came gushing like a torrent. The fire spreading made it impossible to even reach the hole for an attempt to fix it. Even if they do manage to extinguish the fire the hole is too big to patch. In comparison when Kaymar made a mistake not securing the bell diver properly and causing to open a hole during the storm, it was small enough to succesfully patch that hole. But that's not possible due to the tear and size from the boiler explosion. Hence the boat sank so fast probably no one knew what action to take, but it was too late anyways. As evidance of the life boats in the game, no one was able to safely lower the boat for an escape.
@UniversalControl-134 ай бұрын
@@Irumimiru Also you aren't wrong about the storm. Although they did pass through it. During the storm Kaymar suggested to eyeball the water gauge meaning they had to directly tamper with the water pipe somehow. The pipe was long since stressed and since the water from what I gather were syphoned, the boiler couldn't regulate heat as intended. They did attempt to fix it but it was too late.

I love trying to think about this story at the end of it all. Like if they didn't hire demesvar for a second opinion this probably wouldn't have happened, but they wouldn't have hired demesvar if thomas had been honest about his mental state, but thomas already wasn't taken seriously by the captain so how would that have gone, but the captain was on literal heroin trying to cope because his daughter just died, etc etc. But even past that, is it possible they could've survived if Maria didn't lock the fire door? Was Erik's work culture at fault to a degree? I don't know! And that's why I love it. You could blame the whole ship if you wanted but most people had good intentions and this disaster was the culmination of so many perfectly human actions, would it even feel good to find fault? Maybe it'd help for a bit, but I'm glad you get to end by taking the first step to moving on.
@UniversalControl-134 ай бұрын
@@LindseyNZ I dunno second opinion is right term for what Demesvar was hired for. I'm pretty sure he did a big upgrade on the ship's engine just what's puzzling was that there's no document for the changes he did. But you are right on that.

I too figured there would be an alternative ending, and spent WAY too long to find someone who actually played it/showed it. SPOILER below! . . . . . You can choose to stay with Alex even if you initially break away from her, as long as you don't enter the elevator. What happens starts off the same as every time you try to help Alex; you try cutting her free. But this time, hallucination Alex comments on the events, saying how they won't have enough time to do this and get out, how this isn't right/what you should do. Then you do as you've done all the other timed and turn to look at stuck Alex, but now she's saying this isn't what she wanted for you. You look down to see that you've cut a hole in the arm of your suit, and now Alex watches as your suit fills with water and you drown. Extremely tragic either way. You either listen to her crying and begging for you to not leave her, or you drown the same way she did while she tells you you shouldn't have and she didn't want you to.

I wonder if Cam blocked out seeing the crew's bodies if they all died with the ship. It couldn't have been long enough to not find any of their remains - at least their clothing etc. Which is even sadder to consider Cam searching for answers and brushing past his crew completely unaware of them floating next to him. Gameplay wise it makes sense to have the boat empty but if they didn't escape the boat where are they? At least Kaymar and Eric who definitely passed inside the boiler room even if the rest of the crew went above deck and got swept away its all just too sad
@vivil80054 ай бұрын
Bodies tend to disappear fast in the ocean. Ocean currents, sea life, and time (since it'd been months at this point) would clean up a lot. I think a couple of them, at the very least, didn't drown with the boat. Adelina and Kadri were in the mess during the explosion (her cow eggplant is still there), on the upper parts of ship. Kadri could have stayed to see if there was anything he could do, but I can't imagine him letting Adelina come. She, at the very least, likely made it to the upper deck. Her fate after is uncertain-we don't know if she could swim at all. Even if she could, she didn't know how to operate the life boats, and there was little time. If she did know how to swim, she was likely in the ocean for days before a combination of exhaustion / dehydration / hypothermia took her. She would have drifted far away. The best you could hope for her was that she was not alone during that time.

14:42 For some time those boats were used to transfer people from one ship to another. Ships usually took a long time to sink and those boats frequently turned upside down in stormy waters, so it was better to wait in the ship. So even if they did use the boats as a last resort, they could have drowned anyway (I suppose the ship had more boats).

If he was inexperienced he would still be an apprentice and his mentor would still be around being a mentor But given his mentor retired or is no longer his mentor that means he was proven to be very experienced enough to do the job That is the whole point for people to take on apprentices to train them to take over their position when they feel like they no longer can do the work His mentor had trained him to be the new chief engineer because he was getting to old to do the job and given he became the new chief engineer that means his mentor approved he was ready to take over It didn't matter what anyone said he mentor is the one who makes it clear if he is experienced enough or not to do the job And since he had the job that means he was proven to be experienced enough to take the job If he was still to inexperienced he would still be an apprentice he wouldn't have the position at all because back then that is how it was your mentor would refuse to approve you if they still found you to inexperienced to take up their job Hans just didn't like he was just so young (in his early 20) working as an engineer he saw him inexperienced because of his age but if he was approved for the job that means he was very experienced enough for the job He even went by the book his own mentor didn't even do that he didn't keep records or anything and he didn't even report that the engine was outdated or anything he just updated parts that he saw needed it and that's it the mentor literally sounded like someone who was inexperienced wasn't thinking properly because how could he sit here and go about updating stuff without checking to make sure the engine itself was updated or could handle the updates and all He knew the engine wasn't up to date but his mentor didn't? The mentor had to of known he had to see some documents and blueprints and all to know they wasn't updated for the engine to where he would refuse to upgrade anything until the engine was but instead he just did the job without a second thought So when he came back and the engine was straining he thought someone was sabotaging the ship because there was no record of anything while he was gone but when Jessie informed him of what all happened while he was gone it finally shed light to what was wrong He stated the schematics or blueprints for the engine was outdated so when they updated some parts of the ship it caused a strain on the engine to where the whole thing needed to be rebuilt and updated to handle the updated parts because he didn't know what was updated to revert it so he could figure out what was causing the strain because his mentor didn't keep record or what all he done for him when he returned so to keep the engine from blowing up because of the strain the whole thing needed to be rebuilt with updated blueprints and all to keep up with the parts So my question is this: why did his mentor update those parts before updating the engine? 38:54 Even Alex said something about Thomas knowing the engine as much as his mentor did which means his mentor knew that engine well enough to know it was outdated because Thomas knew that and all so if he did know why did he still update parts before updating the engine?

The mentor showed signs of dementia, so he had memory loss on top of other dementia symptoms. The mentor most likely didn't do the paperwork because of that, it's mentioned that Thomas was covering for him and doing it. The crew didn't know, so when the mentor did the upgrade without Thomas, there was no one to compensate and fill in for the forgetfulness and mistakes.

Part of me wonders if Maria threw the key to the fire room into the boiler (they mention a small object they couldn't reach and she walks towards the boilers which isn't near an exit) and that's what caused the boiler to break in the first place.
@UniversalControl-134 ай бұрын
Unfortunately no it was the water gauge that was the problem. Was it the mentor fault? The manufacturer? It wasn't clear but both had hands on the tragedy. Part of me can't believe they hadn't make sure the mentor left a clear record on the upgrades on hand. I'm pretty sure Isabelle and Hans are the ones making that arrangements so I'm a bit baffled by the lack of documents of those changes. The equipment probably couldn't handle the pressure hence even if Maria destroyed the key it wouldn't make a difference. Except for the fire escape door which I don't think they would extinguish the fire, but they could have escape safely earlier (this is just speculation tho). But it is an interesting theory just for me its unlikely.

First I was a little disappointed as I hoped this would be a little like " Call of the sea " and have Lovecraftian elements in it, but it were more like those Sherlock Holmes games and quite interesting mystery. Can this happens in reality ? Absolutely. I have almost 40.years of experience of heavy machinery production and warehouse work. I have seen several horrible accidents from cuts and bad bruises to lost fingers. I was fortunate enough to be at home when several accidents resulting in death happened, but they always resulted in a quite thorough investigation on what happened, and what can be done for it to never happen again. So that is the lesson here, work environment is getting safer for each passing year, and companies are actually working to reach a goal of zero accidents. ( It might be to avoid settlements and lawsuit - but I take it. )

Everyone on the boat is lacking the safety procedure. Like for reals even tho Eric is trying to implement it he's stubborn in the wrong places. Arguing in a workplace shouldn't even happened. Then there was Isebelle and Hans, there was no documents of the changes being made by the mentor which maybe they want to be discreet but there still needs to be a clear hard copy on hand. Thomas whose clearly competent was too respectful of his mentor leading the tragedy and then the matter of stoveaway which fortunately was just a little girl whose heart is good. And Maria? Oh boy I don't need to spell that out. As for Jessie she wasn't taught on what safety she needs when out on sea, no one had a safety guide either. The kicker? The manufacturer that just sends out a faulty part that was paid in full. Granted its hard to find the fault part but it's no excuse and should be sued for damages.

To make it brief the ship sank because of a faulty parts and the updates made by Thomas' (the engineer of the ship) mentor. This faulty part also apply to the crane used to lift up the statue (from earlier game) from the waters. The manufacturer didn't/couldn't detect the faulty parts and just sent them, causing the incident making the crane couldn't handle the weight thus collapsing. This lead to the death of Alex which our protagonist struggle to accept because they wanted to find fault in someone else. They (our protag) wanted to believe it was done by a sinister intentions of someone in the crew. But reality is everyone wasn't at fault but was trying to survive the storm with the ship stopped working in the middle of the sea. There was distrust sure (there was a lot of let say drama and tension), however it was found out everyone had a future to look forward to which makes it all sadder. The heaviest one being the captain which is actualy Alex's father, he didn't know until she died thus struck with grief. He got out of it and manage to fight the storm but the a blow in the boiler ended everyone. I forgot to mention the problems they were having on the ship's engine was the boiler, this is the one that's probably updated by the mentor. It was found out when the storm was about to hit. There was a temporary fix but when they were about to fix it for real the pipe of the boiler overheated, causing it to explode. This what made the hole and plus coals are everywhere which caught on fire. You can imagine the damage it cause. A lot was going on but this is the major gist of it.

when Gab was talking about BB's weight and stuff, I was curious to see how that compares to freedom units, and my cat (not the one in my pfp, he's about the same as BB) is 10.5kg 😅

That inscription on the silver mirror is kinda messed up , the siren kept Odysseus from returning to his wife , for years.

So the resolution to this spooky mystery is "It was the boiler"?

You forget that the mentor had a hand on this boiler exploded. We can also concluded the manufacturer being incompetent in some parts being faulty (the crane incident).

Thats what causes a lot of many accidents like cars, planes, and trains. The game is not just the mystery but the protagonist having to accept the reality of unfairness. It was ultimately no one on ship fault just unfortunate mistakes that causes the life of people who had a future. Kaymar has a girlfriend, Thomas was briliant, the stowaway that escaped street life, the chef whose kind, Jessie's carreer, Maria becoming a respectable adult, and the couple whose just had their bond blossom. This is the real tragedy. As for Hans well he lost both people already but he got a hold of his grief in the end. It's most likely he is the one who died with no hold in the world of living.

So the boiler was a bigger deal even tho it sounds lame but with context it's devestating.

@@UniversalControl-13 Yeah, I guess I've just been conditioned over time to expect something spooky in a game like this. But I don't need Cthulhu to show up or anything like that.

Help! So what cause the crane to break?! I missed that part and can't find where it's answered...

gab wrapped up at the end, an undetectable hairline fracture in the metal made it weak. a manufacturing issue nobody could have caught
