NASA's Operation IceBridge has launched its Antarctic 2012 campaign, flying high-priority missions measuring polar ice from a base of operations at the tip of Patagonia on the Strait of Magellan. They have even made a return visit to the Pine Island Glacier, the site of last year's discovery of a massive rift in the ice.
Sea ice doesn't always hold the allure of a massive ice sheet, or a crevassed blue glacier spilling between mountains, but it comes in array of shapes and sizes and has its own ephemeral beauty. Operation IceBridge studies sea ice at both poles, and also runs across interesting formations on route to other targets. Operation IceBridge returned to the Pine Island Glacier twice in 2012, and NASA glaciologist Kelly Brunt discusses the implications of the glacier's impending calving event.
Operation IceBridge has now returned to the Pine Island Glacier, not once, but twice in 2012. And the year-old giant crack in the glacier, poised to create an iceberg the size of New York City? Well it's still there, and that iceberg has yet to break free. But the rift has grown longer, much wider, and spawned a secondary crack. Before we talk about when that mighty berg will be born, let's take a look at the IceBridge missions themselves. IceBridge's first return to the region was a high altitude flight over the entire region, including the Thwaites, Smith, and Kohler glaciers. After this campaign is over, scientists will be able to compare this broad survey with previous years' measurements in order to better document the rapid and widespread changes in the region over time.

Bull. You guys make this stuff up as you go along? Sheeple at their best. Both the arctic and antarctic have been increasing in Toto for the last 7 years, the locations has changed. The mean temp in Antarctica is -56 F. Unless there has been a major change int physics, nothing melts at those temps.

I guess it's easier to feed at the trough than it is to look up and learn something tangible. It's sad that you'd follow the sophistry of youtube videos while denying yourself the pleasure and mystery of our physical sciences. I guess you'd simply label anyone that questions reality as a scientist? Or is that you? You contradict yourself. Allow me to elucidate; you question reality, take the easy explanation (junk fed) and then use confirmation bias to reinforce your delusion. You then claim those who quanitify, question and quite publicly question our reality as being some kind of lying cult? Think about that for a moment.

Its not really a 'debate', its actually quite surprising you've been reading, though. I'm proud of you. The vast majority of Political scientists, rather than you claim, 'believe' global warming (or Climate change, as what has been said since the 1980s, not your fox news propaganda) to be what is affecting your so called young Earth, Hence the increase in temperature annually since the 1940s.

You people is so full of shit - how about you go there your self and explore it? And show the "truth" Of course they fly close to the coast line as their goal is to study how the ice and glaciers changes (the part in the middle is the last part to bee affected by climate changes). There have been several flights right over Antarctica too - there is even a video on KZbin where they fly around the Antarctica from Sidney and back to Sidney - it took 12 hours. According to your model that would give an average speed of the flight that is over 6000 km/h due to the distance of your coast line that goes along with the edge of your 40 000 km diameter earth disc. Almost 5 times the speed of sound and more than twice the speed of Concorde, with a Boing 747, LOL!!

One more point to consider on this man-made global warming issue, which no one seems to be raising. Even if we in America, and all of Europe, were to adopt draconian emission controls (and virtually ruin our economies in the process) -- what about the worst polluter and CO2 emitter in the world, China? What about Russia? Or the emerging third-world nations that are heavy on the CO2 emissions, such as India, Indonesia, Brazil, Argentina, Iran, Mexico? There's no barriers to CO2 -- it travels the world over. A glance at any table of CO2 emissions by nation shows that the United States and the European Union could stop all such emissions, and that would only account for about 25 percent of the world's total. . Is there anyone out there naïve enough to think that China, which produces about 22 percent (and steadily rising) of CO2 is going to cut THEIR economic activity to get in line with some utopian fancy of man-made climate change? If so, I got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. The Chinese are a fast-emerging economic power, and there's nothing that's going to dissuade them from their goals. First (and almost within reach now) is economic hegemony over Asia. Next (which some economics say is only a couple decades off) is to the THE major economic power of the world. (Which will probably happen, as long as the United States keeps shooting ourselves in the foot). These have been China's stated goals for decades now, and nothing is going to make them hobble their economy while pursing them. Bank on it. And, as they are still a very statist society, there's no internal pressure to make them change, either. Russia, which seems to be "re-Sovietizing" before our very eyes, is not going to be left out in the cold either, and fail to grab their share of economic prosperity. And who's going to tell the emerging economies of Asia, central and South America that -- well, it's too bad for them, but due to man-made climate change, they're going to have to stay down in the third world. Just some more "food for thought", and another reason to look very closely at this climate change science we're being spoon-fed.

+fabian riquetti You are right to a point, NASA launched a sat back in the 90's to prove Al Gores global warming propaganda. This sat was to monitor the warming of the Earth over 5 years or so, but funny, when the data was finally downloaded it showed the Earth had cooled a degree or so. The Clinton White house went into total spin control, funny watching them squerm. But I disagree on the moon landing, they did it, but they lied about everything they found their. Now some of the Astronaughts are trying to come clean and talk about the alien forces their, but die just after. And by the way, I live in a dark country area, and I can see the space station when it comes over with my telescope, its very cool looking. God Bless, and challenge everything brother..

This video is old and there has been record ice growth in 2013 and 2014 is well above average. The sky is not falling, the sea is still in the same place. If anything we're headed for another ice-age. With the accelerated movement of the poles and the lack of sunspots, we should see a great drop in temperature in the next couple decades. Yes there is a lot of CO2 in the atmosphere, we put a lot there, but there is no conclusive evidence that the heightened levels will actually cause a temperature rise globally. Also please feel free to search for the changes on Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These changes where caused by the Sun and not us. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to bring my SUV to Mars and tear it up but its not going to happen. So, take off your blinders and take a look at the BIG picture!

Kurt Iwaniuk "Fact is there has been record ice growth in Antarctica" - There has been record sea ice growth in Antarctica, but sea ice does not affect sea level rise at all. The record sea ice is due to stronger westerly winds which are blowing cold Antarctic air further out over the ocean east of Antarctica. "Fact is" that the Antarctic glaciers are undisputedly melting at an alarming pace that does not correspond to any natural cycle. "Point is, the earth will shake us of like a bad case of fleas. It will be here long after we are gone" -Yes moron, this is exactly the point. The earth will be fine. Life on the earth on the other hand, may not be.

@ytsas45488 8 жыл бұрын
No, I'm not talking about an actual curve because it's basically impossible to see one from so low, unless you're talking about the horizon itself. Basically, if you see other ships, you can see that a curve exists because they will disappear into the horizon bottoms first, which means that the horizon is lower than your current position. This will be true everywhere, and if you have navigational equipment, and can calculate your distance between land on the horizon and your current distance, you could use that to calculate the Earth's shape: a sphere.

Your almost correct. The difference in salinity/density of the sea water and the fresh water ice, causes an increase in volume of about 2.6% because fresh water ice floats better in salt water than in fresh water. However, sea ice will have minimal effect on rising oceans. Its the land ice of Greenland and Antarctica that will cause oceans to rise. 100% of that volume will be added to the oceans.

A guess of mine would be that its possibly an infrared lasercom system from an orbital satellite directed at the artic base. And due the the ccd camera in this video having such a high gain in low light conditions it would stand a very good chance of detecting signals weaker than even the human eye could see and still appear blinding in the image. I am not sure what the energy density at the receiving end would be and that depends greatly on the divergence and output power of the transmitting laser but even if the spot size on the ground were 100 meters in diameter im sure it would still be bright enough for cameras to see. just a little of my two cents from my days at NASA..

Fresh water freezes at a higher temperature than salt water. Fresh water also tends to stay at the surface of salt water. The amount of land ice matters far more than sea ice. Sea ice causes a net zero gain in sea level.

ok lets get things strait here. i have been facintated by the earths polar regions since i was a kid and have studied both regions since then, way before al gore came up with his bullshit. everything i see of every video i've ever been able to track down i see nothing out of the ordinary with any data that comes out of any study. let drag out the carbon myth first. the atmoshere is 70% nitrogen, 20% oxegen both o2 and o 3, 5% methane CARBON IS 1.5% and the rest is a mix of different shit. o2 floats up hits solar radiation and turns into o3 essentially what creates this bubble by protecting us like a shell from space radiation. and if any gas has an effect it is methane and nothing absolutely nothing to do with carbon! methane technically disolves o3 letting more light through warming the planet and melting caps. most of this methane comes from the ocean floor. so more ice caps melt the heavier the water gets with fresh water dilusion, it both slows the conyer belt but also serves to contain more methane on the ocean floor. SO HEAVIER WATER MEANS LESS METHANE WICH MEANS THICKER ATMOSHERE, WHICH MEANS LOWER TEMPERATURE!! LOWER TEMPERATURE MAKES THICKER EXPANDING ICE. this is how the world is temperature controlled!! the danger is not global warming fools IT IS GLOBAL COOLING!!! for the past 5 years the world has been seeing record breaking COLD!! not heat!! this is a natural cycle!! we freeze and we melt we're either oceans or ice! but this isnt even the problem it is NOT MAN MADE!!! look at the charts everytime our weather goes wacky you will see a spike in SOLAR RADIATION AND SOLAR FLARES!! the past decade has seen an increase in solar activity and it is the biggest threat to civilization as we know it! you liberals and fools need to STOP GETTING YOUR SCIENCE FROM POLITICIANS!! and instead go and look up actual scientific reports released from M.I.T. wake the fuck up and educate your self STOP BEING SHEEP!! THATS HOW THE POLITICIANS AND TYRANTS WIN!!

I don't care if global warming is man-made or not, nor do I care if it's even happening. What I do care about is the waste from fossil fuels and the pollution in our rivers, lakes, oceans, and atmosphere. Why shouldn't we switch to clean energy now that it's viable and becoming increasingly economical? It's the sensible and logical thing to do. Why waste our time and resources on a finite material that's demonstrably horrible for our living standards when we could be using a renewable source that doesn't pollute our resources? It's not like switching our energy sources from oil will do away with all oil industry. Almost all plastics are oil based as are many computer parts. The oil industry will survive, perhaps not be as lucrative as it currently is, but it certainly won't disappear. Maybe then the oil subsidies won't seem as absurd as they currently are. Hmm, doubtful.

***** I agree with your points here, nice to see a freethinker expressing themselves. My opinion is perhaps slightly more radical; as i don't care who's fault it is or what the cause is, i'm just pissed that 100 years ago people could go camping and (in the UK) and could avoid civilisation. I cant go anywhere in this country that lets me do that, either the noise of cars (or other noise pollution and main emissions, without going into the toxicity of their fumes and the effect that has on wild areas by killing off fungi or mosses etc) or the sight of chimney stacks, power lines etc. no matter where you go, you always find a human footprint (even if you ignore the constant drone of cars in the back ground, a nice walk out somewhere and the impact litter has is disgusting and shocking, especially woodland as they seem to be magnets for beer cans and such from irresponsible humans. The "agent" in the matrix was right, the human race is a virus, and it i the worst virus this planet has ever seen, i am ashamed to be part of this wasteful ignorant society, and i cannot escape it and live away from humans (as if it were possible i would probably choose to do) as no matter where i chose to go, i would have roads, towns and other "litter" which is inescapable. might sound harsh, but this planet needs a good amount of eradication and severely reduce the human population so the world can balance itself out, and hopefully humans can learn to live like every other form of life- in harmony with everything, not manipulating nature for our own needs and disregarding the needs of every other species we cohabit with (dams and farms are major examples here, as is deforestation and mining. we should change how we live, but without being forced into it, i doubt more than 0.1% or the earths population would ever actually begin to live as an animal should do, creating territories/ hunting grounds and having their own natural ranges etc without manipulating the environment and destroying/ exterminating other animals. WE ARE A VIRUS, AN INCURABLE VIRUS AND THOSE "IN POWER" ARE THE ONES WHO SHOULD BE TRYING TO FIX THE DAMAGE, but every single one is only in that position to further their own ends and line their own pockets. Money is a curse. I feel sorry for the planet, we are killing her. apologies for the rant. for more of my opinions,or you need extra bedtime reading material: message me for my website details ;-)

***** What is commonly referred to as "fossil fuels" is decomposed organic matter that has been compressed into substances such as oil and coal. We know for fact that oil and coal result from organic matter, which is why they are commonly referred to as "fossil fuels." This has been known for over 100 years. Or perhaps you meant something else when you said "no such thing as fossil fuels." However, regardless of the origins of such fuels, we do know that they give off known pollutants. This is a fact and the main reason the EPA was formed - under a republican president, no less. Prior to the EPA, there were no laws about the disposal of the waste from using these fuels or about the disposal of toxic chemicals. Since the EPA was formed, our rivers and lakes have been cleaned and we have water that is safe to drink and air that is safe to breathe. They've also cleaned up hundreds of toxic waste sites and forced companies to responsibly dispose of waste materials. The EPA keeps us safe and only fools would seek to get rid of it. Unfortunately, one of our parties, ironically the party that gave birth to the EPA, has decided that it needs to go away. I can't support that. I used to be a Republican before the Tea Party invaded. I agree with Will McAvoy from Newsroom (HBO). The Tea Party is *not* Republican.

The republican party hasn't even been republican since the liberals took both parties over in 2000. The true conservatives are the libertarians, which are the real republicans. The rest are just fanned liberals and liberal lites. Rand Paul for president!!! Oh and if you people want to stop pollution then you better go after the dirty filthy dumb ignorant commies that rule China. They make more pollution in a month the the rest of the counties produce in one year. Look at just the environmental disaster that is the the gorges dam. It caused so much damage out actually added 2 seconds a day by displaying so much weight in such a concentrated spot. Their is also tectonic implications to this. They open a new coal plant every day, and sniff had gotten do bad that they've actually erected giant screen to show Sun rise and Sun set because you can't do it through the smog in some areas. Any thing we do everywhere else would just be a waste of money if China is not stopped. But that's liberal Marxism for you. Do what ever you want so long as you destroy as many lives as possible on the process under the guise of safety and security.

Cornholio Da'Greatta how is it liberal Marxism to want safe water to drink and clean air to breathe? I never said one word about any other country. It is ridiculous to worry about cleaning up another country when our own is dealing with such horrible pollution. But then, you've revealed yourself. You're a libertarian. So naturally you don't give a shit about anything other than your own skin. Oh, and before you get too deep in your Rand Paul worship, you should do a little research. The man says whatever talking point he thinks will earn him points. Right now, he's regurgitating his dad's talking points because he wants to inherit his dad's fanboys. However, your supposed bastion of libertarianism is also a supporter of the personhood bill. A bill so intrusive, it would make every single miscarriage a murder investigation, not to mention outlawing several forms of birth control, and outlawing all abortions without exceptions, which even my grandmother who is possibly the most pro-life person in my fairly conservative state doesn't support. That doesn't strike me as a very libertarian position. In fact, that is very strict regulation, including telling the drug industry what types of birth control they can and cannot make. The very sort of regulation, in fact, that libertarianism decries. Now, I know I haven't convinced you of anything. Fanboys only cling all the harder to their beliefs whenever they're presented with any evidence to the contrary. However, you really should do some checking yourself. The son is not the father, and you're only going to be disappointed if you think he is. However, I wish you luck. If he maintains his antiwar stance (one of his few stances I actually applaud), he won't have much of a chance of making it through the primary (republican primary voters have been so bloodthirsty for the last decade, I doubt it will change). But if he somehow makes it through and IF Hilary Clinton is the Democrat's nominee (a rather large if, depending on who runs), I think he stands a good chance of beating her at this point. She is, after all, as much a warhawk as McCain is.
