What Scratch Golfers Actually Think About [PREDATOR RIDGE - RIDGE COURSE]

I’m scratch, and I can tell you that the difference in a 3-5 hc, and scratch is basically controlling nerves, and making more one-putts. I highly recommend all of you single digit hc guys to start playing from the front tee boxes more often. You’ll get a lot of mid-range looks at birdie, and you’ll also get more comfortable being under par coming down the stretch. This is VERY important. How many times have you been under par, and blew it on the last few holes? Playing the front tees makes this feel more “comfortable”, and gets you used to going low. It also gives you a lot of practice on those half wedge shots(scoring shots). Also I keep 2 stats…. I need to hit 12/18 GIR, and have less than 30 putts, to shoot par, or under. No doubles, no 3-putts, no chunks or skulls, and no balls out of play. If you struggle with an occasional chunk, or skull then you’re not quite there yet. Practice your “strike”, until it becomes a non-factor.

Wow what a thoughtful recommendation. I am a 4.2 and have battled to get below a 4 hc. I hit 65% GIR and 62% fairways and avg 34.2 putts a round, so it’s all my putting and scrambling. But, I always play from the blue tees when possible thinking I’m cheating when I play from the white tees. Your advice to play from the whites tees challenges me and is a bit unsettling. I usually hit GIR but have 30-50’ putts which is why I have over 34 putts a round. If I was closer on my approach shots maybe I’d be closer to the pin for makeable putts, but that just seems like cheating. I am 61 yrs old hit my drives 250 and 3-metal 235-240 so I think I should hit from the blues. Okay bottom line I’m a head case and need counseling and golf therapy…

@@LakeStevensPete I normally play at 6,500 yards in the summer months. However, I move up to the 6,100 during the winter. It sounds like you’re playing too far back. You should have a wedge, or 9 iron on short par 4’s, and be able to barely reach the shorter par 5’s in two, if you’re at the correct tee boxes. The short par 3’s should have you hitting a short iron(7i or less). The longer par 4’s should never leave you over 200 in. The longer par 5’s should have you about 100 out, after second shot. And on the longer par 3’s, you should have 200, or less from the tee. I never play the tips at my home course. They’re just too long for me(7,100). Play the holes how they’re meant to be played. Don’t punish yourself from making the course longer than it’s designed for you. The red tees at my course are only 5,055. Some of the par 4’s are drivable, but very narrow around the greens. I do play them sometimes, just for the reasons that I mentioned above.

Really insightful comment. I’m currently a 3.1 - I’ve never thought through getting practice at more reasonable birdie opportunities by playing up front. Also, interesting idea to get used to the mentality of low numbers by taking advantage of front tee position. I’ll definitely utilize that this year. Most consistent issue I have when reviewing the results is I’m putting 31-33 times per round.

@@StevieDahlen As far as your putts per round being above 30…. I’m guessing it’s proximity to the hole after a chip, to save pars. Ya gotta get those chip shots inside of a 4’ circle. If it isn’t that, then try taking one more stat. Estimate how many feet of putts you “make” per round. A pretty solid putting round is 75’ of putts made. Just walk off the distance from every putt that you hole(8 footer for birdie, or a 4 footer for par, whatever it is), and just write down 2’ for gimmes. You need to pinpoint why you’re 3-4 putts short of your

It's always funny hearing 10 and up handicappers talking about distance and such with there clubs. Golf is about consistently being able to hit a certain distance over and over again. Not the one time you swung out of your shoes and hit your 9 iron 170 yards straight lol. Once I slowed my swing down to hit a constant shot my handicap has dropped into a low single digit. That being said I will still go out and have a bad score here and there with massive mental breakdowns.

Hey bud! This is the Ridge Course. The Predator is a tougher layout (but with less stunning views). I would guess their season ends in October and reopens in late-March or early-April.

Practicing 115 yds and in got me from about a 6 to scratch and better in less than a season. I would go to the range, hit 100 wedges, then chip & putt for 30-45 minutes. Another interesting result from hitting all those soft shots is that I almost never hit full shots with my 6-LW anymore.

This was more of a match where we could give each other putts. So adam often said my putts were good when they were close to keep things moving. Especially when we are filming and occasionally taking the drone up, we want to be respectful of the groups behind us and not play too slow. Generally, in casual stroke play I’d pickup (and not even bother tapping in) something inside a couple of feet but would take my time to line up my 3-4 footers and make sure i keep my score properly.

Great video, but my biggest pet peeve. why does your friend repair pitch marks wrong? you never pop the middle of the mark back up. that just separates the roots and kills the grass immediately. at 7:38 you can see him do that. you should be doing the opposite motion(the top of your pitch mark tool goes up and towards the middle...not down and away).

Makes it hard to watch pro golf too because they seem to do it wrong as well. It’s apparent in Nash’s swing that he is lead hand dominant (even if it’s not his dominant hand). When I learned that, it transformed my game drastically. Great swing 👌🏽

@@NotAScratchGolfer gladly my friend! Generally speaking, when a golfer tries to use their Trail hand to create power/hit the ball, it results in weak, slappy shots that usually end up right. But, when you learn to use your lead hand as much as, if not more than your trail hand (starting with feeling like the lead hand is doing 90% of the work would be my advice), you start getting more lag, more compression, more distance - and a nice draw 👌🏽 I’m no pro, but I went from a 12hdcp to a 4hdcp in just a few months with this change, WITH a newborn (now 5 months old). I honestly feel like I could be much lower if I had the time to practice like I used to. So many years wasted not knowing that the lead hand is the key hand for the avg golfer - the pros already know this. Nash is almost certainly the best/most consistent ball striker I've ever seen, and that includes a handful of mini tour guys I've played with. He doesn't quite hammer it as far as some guys do these days + he says he is prone to the yips with the putter from time to time. Still, he's had some very impressive tournament performances and I'm sure he will continue to!

I like how he said check your ego about power and distances my driver swing is the only swing that gets full power but focusing more on control, 3 and 5 wood down only get 80% swings, that way I can consistently make it through 18 holes, you go taking 100% power swing on everything, we’ll eventually you’ll get tired and now your not at 100% power anymore, you may hit your pw 150 a couple times then towards the end of the round u run into the same shot and only hit your pw 135 and come up short, just my theory that’s why I only play 75-80% power helps me with consistency as well which I believe is the most important aspect to golf

if you want to get to scratch you should focus on getting your reps in above anything else. it's not really productive to think strategically until your game from outside 30 yds is well below scratch IMO

There was a great ongoing discussion about Nash's swing that I unfortunately had to delete because the OP evoked f-bombs and political attacks. Suffice to say, I generally LOVE the discussion in the comments. There are two odd types of comments, though, that I wish I saw less of: armchair coaching from non-certified pros and "handicap deniers." One commenter said, "calling BS on this guy being a +3 with that swing." This comment under literal empirical video evidence of that swing producing 9/9 GIRs, one bogey, multiple missed putts inside 6 feet, and a 3-under thru 9 score. What bothers me about these comments is that they promote the false notion that we play "golf swing" instead of "golf." So swing your swing, golfers. See a professional for coaching, and don't fret if your swing doesn't look like Adam Scott's.

This actually magnifies the importance of thinking well. If i dont swing, putt, or chip like a +3 (which i agree, i dont) it shows how important thinking well and course management are. Also, there’s something to be said about consistently getting to the same impact position. It doesn’t really matter how you get there (insert jim furyk, matt wolfe, or anyone unconventional), but it matters that you can repeat your swing and that path, club face, angle of attack etc match up to produce a predictable outcome.

Do you want to get better than a scratch or happy with where you are at? For me, i love the challenge of improving even though i may have reached my individual potential. I’ve found that working on all aspects of my game, including my course management and mental toughness has helped me shoot lower scores when i am playing well and less bad scores when i am playing poorly. In my opinion there is no better feeling then chasing a tournament win or personal low score, you should give strategic course management a try!

Yeah Nash would typically play one tee back. Kept it simple and played the same tees so as to maintain pace (we were already a foursome playing two separate boxes with a tripod and a drone :p).

NASH plays nice but I wonder.... are you always playing short putts like that? Friendly game and all okay.... but even when I play a friendly game, I never stand on the line of play... adding 4 general penalties so +8 to Nash's score for a +6.... this habit is going to cost you at some point...
