nice presentation. I'm in 6a (though so far this winter has been a 7), and because i keep my house cool (55 degrees), I plant peppers in early February. Even with a heat mat, in that temp it'll take 2 weeks for them to sprout. Here, peppers/tomatoes/eggplants/ground cherries traditionally go out on May 5. Tomatoes I start March 15; they're much more forgiving about ambient temps for sprouting.

I've found that as well. Much easier to get the tomatoes up and growing!

I've never done petunias before. How long do you keep them inside before you transplant them out? I was thinking about doing some this year, but I need to figure out the timing.

I'm 5b in N.Iowa and our average last frost date is may 6th. Starting to plan my spring garden now ( maybe to cure some winter time blues as it is currently snowing and going to be single digits to below 0 the next few days ) and this was really helpful! thank you! :)

I live in SW Nebraska 5b and I found that it is better for me to plant cool weather crops at the beginning of May; and warm weather crops at the beginning of June.

Hey! These videos are really helpful! Quick question. You said spinach and kale in January too? Should those be planted in zone 5a inside at the end of January or February?

It depends, if you have a cold frame that you are going to transplant into then January is okay. If they are going straight out to the garden then wait until February.

I had my first (small) garden last year, zone 6a...but this year I have a green house and just got a grow light, there are fans and a thermometer...I’m working on plans and this is very helpful, but does anyone know wheee I could find info even more specific to do with using a greenhouse? I don't understand something here. You said for zone 5, last frost date is 05/15 so I should be ready to plant outside on 04/01 so start seedlings indoors by mid to late February. Can you really plan outdoors before last frost date? won't the frost kill the plants?

Not cool season plants like lettuce, broccoli, kale, cabbage. The will be fine with a little frost. It is the warm season crops that will get frozen by the frost.

I planted kale seed Sept 1 in ground. An early freeze meant it never got very tall in fall, and despite a couple of 10 degree nights, and ice storms and snow storms, it's still alive and starting to put on new growth again. It's amazing how much cold kale can bear! Winter Density lettuce (available lots of places) didn't die until 13 degrees. Turnips (variety Snowball) also made it through 10 degrees. Just don't touch the leaves of greens while they are still frozen; let them thaw out naturally. HTH!

"Cold crops" like what he mentions will take a good amount of frost..things like cucumber,squash, tomatoes and peppers that can't handle frost.. You will need to wait on... I am 5b..but in Colorado we have snowy days till mid may..but so much sunny and warmth in between that as long as I cover things when we have snow I can plant a lot out as early as late Feb. Or March.

I noticed a discrepancy in dates mentioned and would like clarity. *3:35* into the video you said "using zone 6, no, let's use zone 5, so if you last frost date is May 15th then you're going to want to plant these [these being the crops discussed at the beginning] out about *April 1st* which means you're going to want to start them mid to late February inside so they are ready to go out on *April 1st* Later, during a recap: *4:46* and those of you in zone 5 you're going to want to start these late in February so that it's going out *mid to late April* 3:35 You said the discussed crops should be planted out on *April 1st* 4:46 You said the disgust crops should be planted out *mid to late April* I'm in zone 5, Connecticut and the weather change from April 1st to 'mid to late April' Is significant in terms of gardening. Planting something out on April 1st means the crops will face much colder temperatures and possibly much more snow accumulation than if they are planted out mid to late April. April is a month of significant change so it really does matter. Is what you said first, plant them out on April 1st, correct, or is what you said second, plant out mid to late April, correct? Thank you

Help!!! Everybody’s advice about this is different?? I’m planning my second garden last year I started super late. I’m in southern Indiana zone 6 a. April 30 LFD. I’m wanting to start seed I was thinking it was time for cabbage and cauliflower but thought it was to early for other stuff. I’m so confused. I don’t know what advice to trust.

That last frost date is the key! for cabbage and cauliflower (and really any other cool season plants) you would start 8 to 10 weeks before your last frost. Cool season crops can go out into the garden BEFORE your last frost date.

Zone 6, can I put potatoes out under hoop house in feb?

Rachel, I would hold off a little longer. I'm also Zone 6 and I put some potatoes in every year in Mid March, in a cold frame. and even then if we happen to be having a colder than usual year they "wallow" around for a while and don't get growing as quickly as I would like. A hoop house doesn't provide as much protection as a cold frame, so I think you should wait. Or you could try a little experiment this year and see how it goes. My biggest worry is that the ground could still freeze and damage the seed potatoes.

Root crops don't transplant well so I would say no. They do well just planting them directly outside.

If you are doing a "zone specific video" don't send your views to a link to look for what that Zone is. It would take less time to state where that zone is, then to state the link and link that link. 🤔 Red flag warning for this poster!!!!

I'm sorry I don't understand this comment. Listing where zones 5 and 6 are would take hours. It covers a large portion of the us and canada but is greatly affected by altitude, latitude, etc. That's why I post the link so you can go look up your zone yourself.

You’re saying that the literal hours and hours it would take to state every zone by every area in all fifty states and Canada would take less time than sending us to a link to see which zone we live in(which we all live in different areas) this is the dumbest comment in the internet congratulations you win.
