UPDATE 2: After 6 days, KZbin is starting to recommend this video to a broader audience... but it took over 1700 comments and 9k likes to get here! (And the video has only around 70k views) If THIS is the kind of reaction youtube needs before it recommends art content, how on earth is any artist and creative supposed to share their passion with the world and reach a wider audience? The only good thing is that other artists will now have a positive effect because the more people this video reaches, the more youtube will recommend my fellow peers and their videos along with it. (what many people don't know is that if more art videos do well, ALL artists benefit from it because our content and channels are linked/associated with each other) UPDATE: As of right now this video has more views, likes, comments and shares than all of my other recent videos. But the amount of people this video reaches (impressions) is lower or the same than my last videos. It’s not the viewers who decide the views and what they see… it’s KZbin! And they do in fact control and suppress users and content. Wether it’s a feature or a bug I don’t know. But it is 100% real! Some food for thought 😅. Thank you all for watching!!! Please show each other some love and support… Artists, creatives and creators need a sense of community more than ever!!! 🫶 And If you want to support me you can leave a like, a comment or do so over at Patreon.com/alpayefe

Your video brought to light exactly what I've noticed. Less of the art I want to see, more garbage I'm not interested in. KZbin didn't used to be that way. It's frustrating. Thank you for clarifying, for me, the vague red flags that I didn't quite identify.

Well, I think one way around the problem could be to start doing short videos. And I don't mean compromising with the quality of the content. What I mean is a short video serving as a trailer for the longer one. I've seen this on a channel with some historic content and was wondering, why the guy was doing it, but after watching your video I think that it may be that he's using the short videos to get attention for the full content ones and get around the algorythm.

I have a really small channel and had to stop painting traditionally and started to do comic illustrations to generate some views and try to grow my channel because of this issue. At first I thought I was going crazy but it seems I’m not the only one experiencing this. Thanks for bringing this topic up. KZbin would also actively take away my views. One moment I would have 60 views and a few hours later I would have 25 views. And having a small channel, there’s no way to ask for help, no to call or email cause KZbin prioritizes bigger channels, not nothing channels like mine. Even though I like painting traditionally I can’t afford it now.

Trying to get my art out on instagram and even deviantart was completely fruitless, but i was beyond surprised after moving to a small town in central Finland. People were happy to not only view my art but support it, talk about it with their friends and family. Sharing and creating is greatly encouraged. And it just makes me think that maybe its the internet that ruined art and its value. Just creating art isn't enough for the online world, we have to dress it up and dance it around like a monkey.
@0ooTheMAXXoo0
@0ooTheMAXXoo0 Жыл бұрын
What methods did you try on instagram or deviant art to let people know that you exist at all? It took some social interactions in your town for people to realize that you make art and to then see it and then to like it and talk about it. Is there really more individuals in your small town that have seen your art than there were views on social media? The people noticing you in your home town might be enough to raise your exposure on-line. All it takes is for a few people to link to your art and then all of a sudden your audience is the whole world. The first step has to be local engagement or on-line engagement. No one will find you on-line or in real life unless they have a reason to find you...

@@0ooTheMAXXoo0 i maxed out my online art presence at about 5000 follows on insta after 5 years, half the population of my small town, and dA is basically dead. In my experience even just 10 people being interested in my art in real life did way more than the 5000 online. And it may or may not be a good number, but it became stagnant there. And no one would buy art, just look and scroll. Maybe comment if i danced it around like a monkey. The way i view it now, the real life interactions people have with my art are way more important than trying to gain followers and presence online. Real life meaningful interactions lead to newpaper articles, connections, art galleries, and selling my art became easier too once i changed my focus. And i wish i knew it from the start! Theres a ton of pressure to be known online, and it really isn't worth it for me anymore Its true it has to start somewhere, whether it be online or real life. But for me personally, one was way more effective.

Great video. As a KZbin "consumer" I'm also frustrated with the recommendation engine. It shows me the same videos over and over again, and they are usually the ones with hyperbolic titles and party trick content. And the Shorts are definitely taking over. I spend a lot more time scrolling past things I don't want to watch and it's getting annoying. I'm also concerned that KZbin deliberately concentrates on promoting already successful channels, resulting in a few people making ridiculous amounts of money and everyone else speaking into a void. Not that every creator is relying on KZbin for income, but KZbin shouldn't be the one deciding that. It's not a free market. It's a centrally controlled economy, and we know how those always end.

Ikr. It keeps recommending me videos from 2-10 years ago! The videos that I already either watched or actively chose not to watch back then (hit "not interested" on them). Videos of at least 30 mins to an hour or a few hours got recommended consistently. And I loved it! I never downloaded tiktok so never got into that and KZbin shorts was my first taste of "TikTok content" and it was horrible. I saw some shorts I loved, but the rest would just be weird art hacks that make no sense or mind numbing content and let me not get into that period of time where everything was basically Andrew Tate centered... This was a heart wrenching video as I am one of those artists that has almost given up my art entirely. Besides the social media gift/curse I believe that society as a whole has abandoned the arts. Societies of past used to almost have art at the helm for forward motion. People used to respect artists, thinkers, sculptors, builders etc. because the masses were aware of the work and time invested out of love and only later in life would make a living out of it. These days art is looked at as something doomed to leave you homeless. In my heart that’s exactly why artists should be praised much more. It’s sad that artists will be the ones that have to support other artists but seems to be the only answer. Maybe if we start watching each other more, we can start making a dent on the algorithm.

This is SO TRUE! It's frustrating both as a creator and as a consumer. The search engine is absolute trash now. If you do a search for "oil painting" or whatever medium, you get 6. That's not a typo, SIX listings on that specific search, then it's a bunch of "people also watched", "new channels for you" and "people also searched" along with other suggested posts not under what you searched for. You used to be able to do a search for oil paintings and get hundreds of pages to search through. It was so easy to find new content. It's impossible to find the content you want now. You get what they want you to see.

I'm someone who used to chase the algorithm and shifted from art speedpaints to art challenges and other gimmicks. I got tired of it and now just post what I truly want, but my channel views are way down, and I lose subscribers daily. I knew that would happen, but chasing views was bad for my art and my mental health. I think my channel would have suffered even if I stuck to my older content. It seems like art videos in general aren't as popular as they used to be, whether it's flashy content or otherwise. Luckily, I don't depend on KZbin as my primary income source anymore, which has been very freeing. I can be creative without stressing as much. But it's still sad seeing the art community decline like this. I'll admit I don't watch many art channels anymore. I mostly stick to studio vlogs because art videos don't hold my attention anymore unless it's short form. I want to follow PEOPLE who do art, not the art itself. I want the personal connection and relatability. I only gravitate towards speedpaints if they're short, which I mainly watch on TikTok.

Sandy, you've consistently gotten around the same amount of views per video for a decade. Occasionally you'll create a video that goes somewhat viral (60k views, 100k views, even 20k views is decent output) but you almost never replicate it. You just keep going along doing what you want, which is fine, this is art after all, but you can't then complain that more people won't watch your videos when there's a multitude of other artists out there that will give the audience videos on what they want. I suppose nothing is stopping you from continuing the trudge, but at least now you have a chance to change because now you can't unknow that you are largely responsible for the outcome you've been getting. I’ve been creating watercolor painting videos on YT for 2 years now and hadn’t been shown anything from your channel, Alpay. So, I agree with everything you say in this video. And I have noticed that very few artists ever comment on each others work - I sometimes do, but I don’t feel my comments are appreciated! You're absolutely right, not only in KZbin all over I'm a Artist in Puerto Rico I showed my work in few shows in the island one of my paintings won an award I never received the award the person in charge of the event didn't even acknowledge that my paintings was there it was crazy, I even lost the desire of painting I love to paint, I haven't paint for over a year. I agree with you art it's been taken for granted. Everything it's digital, or abstract art, that I personally don't like. I love traditional art.

Don't lose the desire to paint because of others...I did something similar due to a break up, I regret, I'm slowly getting back to where I was and hopefully surpass that point. I was pretty darn good, now I'm a bit rusty... keep your level of expertise, skill, talents, enjoy -- Keep going for yourself and then later share with others. Some of us that enjoy art, what we see created by others gives us joy too in just seeing what others create. Keep going and don't let others keep you down, then they 'win'. Wishing you more Joy!! :)

It’s interesting I was showed this video today, because today I have been seriously considering giving up art. It’s not just happening on KZbin, but all social media platforms. Instagram, Twitter, twitch. Algorithms do not favor artists and it’s so hard to keep up with posting constantly when sometimes the art takes forever to make. Or you have art you can’t post because of contracts. But yet ai artists are going viral cause they can post 5 posts a day, with various pieces on each post so keeps people looking longer. I miss the days of art communities so much.

It’s crazy how social media was supposed to allow us to connect easier and to a wider audience but it’s becoming much better to just network in real life at this point. Those real life connections are the only ones that actually bring value to our lives now. These platforms are just becoming endless short reels and aren’t conducive for pretty much anyone’s work so they are going to force us off of their own platforms due to their greediness. I’ve even seen this on Instagram and Facebook. I can’t even remember the last time I’ve seen a post from an actual friend and not just some random reel that was targeted to me through the algorithm. The thing is, the people that work at these companies are solely focused on increasing revenue. They don’t care how they do it. Even if that means completely destroying their actual source of revenue in the future, the people that use the platform to begin with. As long as that one person high up in the company looks good in front of their boss because they increased revenue, that’s all that matters.

I've actually noticed this too, but not in the way most people have. Almost all of my subscriptions here are art related as that is my passion. Even looking at more direct terms such as looking for gouache painting or watercolour painting videos, your search will always turn up the same handful of videos most of the time, usually by artists I already watch, so finding anything actually new when DIRECTLY SEARCHING is restricted. It's nice to know it's not just me who's noticed this. I don't make content (yet) so I had no way to see the other trends you mentioned. I also get recommendations that have no actual relevance compared to anything else I've ever watched here, so I agree that some recommendations are literally just shoved down our throats for no reason. There is definitely a decline.

That's alarming. Speaking from my own perspective as an extremely introverted artist (I have literally HUNDREDS of paintings that no one but my bh has EVER seen), I finally feel ready to reveal them to the world.....and it's too scary! Every time I look into social media to promote my art (I don't have an account ANYWHERE) it seems all doom and gloom and stuff that would stifle my creativity. I just don't know where to turn, what to do. So my art just keeps piling up.......and meanwhile my inner child is well and happy, just a little HUNGRY, you know?

As a KZbinr myself, I can confirm that this is happening in other areas too. It’s very scary, as it seems that KZbin isn’t looking for real content anymore. But the biggest contradiction is that it wants longer video of about 10 minutes or more. Little details or empty content could be shown through the shorts. That way viewers won’t feel they are wasting time looking for quality content. I can’t understand the logic behind it 😔

And as a new art content creator on KZbin, I can tell you that it's mentally challenging to stay motivated when the algorithm doesn't seem to be working in your favor. Even though I'm putting in a lot of effort to create high-quality content, I'm not getting the support and engagement that I need to grow my audience. It's not just KZbin, either; Instagram and TikTok are just as tough to crack. It's hard not to feel like it's my fault, that my art isn't good enough, and that I need to change it to something that's more "junk" to suit the audience. But I couldn't stand the thought of compromising my artistic integrity to gain more views or followers. Anyway, I'm one of your biggest fan, and great video as always!

i don't think you could have summed up my own thoughts more perfectly. it's so incredibly disheartening, and a little bit scary, isn't it? especially when you guilt trip yourself into "not posting enough" or "not creating enough" - and as you said, it's definitely not relegated to just one platform. which tells me that ALL of them are deprioritizing our content because it's not driving those impressions. honestly, i think the best thing that we could possibly do is just try and remain as authentic and genuine as possible. stay away from the gimmicks and the trends, because if there's people liking and commenting on something i made solely because it's "trendy" those aren't the people i want to be engaging with long-term. i see so many accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers, and i really truly wonder how many of those people are *actually* engaged followers. i can't imagine that number is really representative of a genuine audience. i want to reach more people, sure. but i don't want to reach passive people.

Musk and twitter are the antithesis to all the other social media platforms. Musk spent so much money on it because there was a distinct lack of fairness and too much control over the thoughts of the people of the world through all social media platforms. It is also why there has been so much attacks against him and twitter since the deal. The powers that were controlling messages in social media lost control over the most influential platform... Twitter is about to release the twitter algorithm by the end of day tomorrow, to the public for scrutiny and for suggestions. They already have community notes implemented where people have already corrected lies in advertising on the platform and mistakes by Musk himself. The more trusted your notes are, the more priority your notes get, like the academic paper system or how google search used to work when it first started and is what made google search so useful in the past. Musk spends all his money on companies that have a mission to benefit humanity. He promises his shareholders the mission, not crazy profits, so his legal duty to shareholders is the mission, not profits, unlike most CEOs and their shareholders...

I have kind of seen it start to happen around Leigh Ellexson which is great but for the most part, it's not a thing and it's really sad. The older videos have more views and comments so they get recommended more and so they get more views and more comments... It is a huge problem. I watch a few "best of the worst" episodes and I want to watch more, but they keep recommending the same four episodes even though I have already seen them... Why not recommend other episodes from the same channel instead of the same videos that I have already seen? The view-count is all I can figure and then it reinforces its own stupidity.

Yes. Like and comment on those you want to support, it helps them. Those you don't want to support do not, and leave the video before it ends. There are three dots beside the titles/thumbnails of videos that KZbin's algorithm suggests to you. Tap the dots and you get the option to not have that creators videos suggested to you again. It works and I have started to use it to filter the unwanted rubbish producers out of my feed. That must really hurt their reputation with the algorithm. Thank you for sharing your perspective and opinion. It helps so much to hear even if you worried about coming across as a complainer. Artists are always told to suck it up, keep going, keep creating, fake it till they make it, and put on an air of success. Doing those things hurts all artists because everything then thinks it’s just them suffering or having a difficult time. Its comforting even if it’s sad that all artists are noticing and seeing this upsetting shift in art being suppressed by the algorithm for subpar gimmicky content. Artists need so many skills on top of just creating. They need to know business, marketing, video editing, copywriting, and now also be entertaining while being robotic content machines. Making this video has drawn the art community together even more. Our best asset is that we are a community that thrives on helping each other. Im positive we will find ways around this, it might take several years but artists find a way to keep creating because it’s who are even if no one is watching.

Gosh this hits close to home. I have a small channel, and I used to have a lot of fun making videos ... but when I look at the content that "successful" channels pump out, I know that I will never fit into that category. I just want to make pretty pictures and share the processes and the thoughts behind them to anyone who's interested. setting up clickbait titles, misleading thumbnails, and contrived content to chase a certain audience is not what I want! Sadly I find so many less videos of other artists these days too, I used to love creating my art while watching others create! I haven't put up a video in a while.... bugger it, I'm going back to it, even if they do end up unwatched and I'm just shouting into a void! lol

Cassandra, it'd be lovely if you uploaded again (once in a while)! Your video on using the white Polychromos pencil was one of the most helpful and unique (!) tutorials out there. (I've watched a lot of art channels over the years, so please take it as a compliment that I remember that video is yours! 😅) Yeah, your channel might not blow up because of a lack of flashy titles, but the artists who do watch you appreciate what you do, I'm sure. Also, it's a personality thing, right? We all prefer some creators over others because of a perceived connection, and small channels are such good places to go for conversation in the comment section. My channel is really small, but I am happy to read and reply to thoughtful comments, which is so much harder for the artists with big channels to do, and I see it in other small channels too. Anyway, just wanted to let you know your videos are appreciated and that having a small channel is also kinda cool. :)

This isn't a KZbin Problem, this is a social media platform. As an artist, I feel like I need to rush and create work in order to keep up with the algorithm but if I take my time and slow down, my digital footprint gets buried by the winds of time. Instagram is tiktokifying itself so I had to change my content from still paintings to speed painting content. I think that social media is conditioning artists and making them more fixated on speed and maintaining attention. It's a toxic symbiotic relationship between the user and the programs.

Just do the best thing for you and your audience and try and ignore the algorithm. The algorithm keeps changing to be better for users, for money interests... It should recommend good content that can be advertised next to, and it should recommend the right content to the right users. Chasing the algorithm will mess up the functionality of the algorithm and then they keep trying to improve it and so the chase keeps going. Meanwhile, I never miss anything from any channel that i care about... If people make good content then I know to look for it and it does not matter what KZbin puts on the front page for me. KZbin seems really dumb about recommendations anyways, since the beginning. Keywords matter more than the actual style or content or gist of the channel. My history seems to not mater, only what I have clicked on very recently... Point being, KZbin has always recommended one or two things on the whole front page that I am interested in. I have always had to work around its recommendation engine to find the stuff that I really want. KZbin provides a service that otherwise would cost millions of dollars per month if a person tried to host their own videos to millions of possible users. Anyone could create a community with its own recommendation engine and use KZbin to store and serve all the videos, embedded on the other community site. Some have tried, but even just the community part and recommendations are so hard to get right that even without the crazy server needs, such a service has yet to become successful at all... If you think of youtube as just this amazing way to host your content for free then how can you be disappointed? Any awareness about your content and any possible advertising money is then a plus...

Well explained. The real threat we all face as artists, is compromising our artistic integrity on KZbin. Instead of succumbing to the influence of the KZbin algorithm and prioritizing the creation of viral videos, we need to stay true to our unique artistic styles. It would help if the KZbin algorithm could promote a more diverse and unique set of artists instead of the same old viral TikTok/reel type of content. It seems that the algorithm is promoting artistic trends, rather than unique content, this can be really disheartening for artists who are trying to keep true to their style.

I miss those videos, and I have much less interest in the "flashy" ones. The algorithm has always been fickle, and it seems even more so lately. I have to go look up creators I haven't seen a video from in ages, only to find they've still been making them and I just haven't seen them. The notification bell helps, but I'm wondering how many people actually use it. I've also noticed that if you want to grow, you can't just put up a simple video of yourself making art - it needs to be beautifully edited and have something important to say if you want to have the smallest chance of it being seen at all. I know it's not that way in every YT community, but the art side of YT seems to demand it.

I feel like we often give way too much about algorithms, comments, likes, dislikes, impressions, views, etc. on our art. A lot of artists have kinda just forgotten what it means to be an artist in the first place. It's not about the race towards the most likes or whatever, but about delivering our unique vision to the world within a visual medium, or discovering and just expressing ourselves through our art for our own sake. It's so much about the rat race nowadays, that the creative process and meaning behind it just takes a back seat.

@@ARTyHaG Ok, one thing: you have a lot of speed painting, speed sketches and whatnot - I no longer watch these. They bring in nothing, just show the process in such a speed no one can truly either enjoy the video or take out anything useful from it. Look at this video of Alpay - you can see the whole, long process of him putting paint to the paper, doing touch ups, colours. And this I can watch. I can see how he approaches his painting how he layers down the paint and pay attention to details. Your flickering speed drawings are just annoying, nothing else. Your Full Version Painting a Rose is much better - and much more enjoyable to watch. Even the music is much better and not so distractingly jumpy like in those speed paintings. you miss a point a bit, you need to generate mone, engagement means money, if this digital time killers could, then there will be most controversial/disgusting/..../engaging content. Engagemnent is ranting, arguind, offending any activity in commments. (yes, a few more metrics is used as subscriptions, likes, shares). Only if some content can turn site into , so called, nazi bar , they consider to suppress such content (model when toxic people make normal people leave). Some nice descriptive examples are creation of universe, flat earth, conspiracy and similar. You get attention from both sides (people who agree and at the same time people ho do not), in some cases they start to argue with each other, what is time they are on your time killing platform (you fill it with advert pop ups / windows/ banners/ ....) and you know, that little ponny eating grass is not that thing which will keep people on your platform. Ok people are changing every minute, overloaded by BS you serve them, they are skipping videos after few minutes or seconds and creators which want say something know that and shorten their videos (which is how tik tok and you tube shorts started). Advertisers (as creators) knew this for a long time and compress their ads into 5sec skipping range (at least have version of their ad). People are overhelmed every day by tons of (des)information and it is simple ecconomy. Every person has limited amount of attention. I can imagine (based on my own approach) how they are watching / reading somethnig and saying "OK! OK! , say that! When it will be, GO! GO! GO!" , because our fast hurrying society makes us inpatient, nonconcentrated and nervous. Then we are skipping, reading only titles and so. This is a circle, some people can quit by returning to brick phones (as one of mine friends), other limit their presence in digital and so on. My case - I did not seen my wall (on some platform) and only each other day I check notifications from my subscriptions (and upsetly remove/tur off notifications recomended by platform). Even thou I am wasting time by trying to not see what I do not want. (yes, I am closing myself into digital bubble)

Honest to God, there’s a cultural war against hard working, talented people. Has to do with “Equity.” That’s not political, that’s just the truth of today. There’s a war between people who actually make themselves great and talented, and those who don’t work at all, and think we should elevate everyone, without needing to worry about becoming great at anything. The end goal to have the people who suck being seen as equal to those who have worked hard and sacrificed. Otherwise, they argue, it’s not “inclusive.”
