In my first video about Serbian I played a clip of Serbian to see if people could identify the language in the clip. In this one I started by asking people for their impression on Serbian. Most said Serbian sounds like Russian. Then I played them a clip of Serbian to see if it was what they thought Serbian would sound like. After their brave imitations I played 2 more clips, one in Serbian and one in Russian, to see if they could identify Serbian.

I hate when ppl say Russian, our language isn't Russian. Yes, it's similar, all Slavic languages have some similarities, but we still need to learn Russian if we wanna understand it completely and vice versa. Only Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian are mutually intelligible and they used to be one and the same language (Serbo-Croatian) in former Yugoslavia.

I think it is because of the grammar - One of the hardest I've seen, like all slavic languages.
@TheStarkman123
@TheStarkman123 7 жыл бұрын
+Tijana Vlahovic the grammar is the reason. Slavic languages have stupidly hard grammar. I'm learning German, and although my pronunciation is great, forming a coherent sentence is a struggle. Reading it is as well can be quite difficult because of the word order and other grammatical features. Serbian is one of those languages with difficult grammar.

Even one Spanish guy told me so, and I think that Spanish and Portuguese people can recognize each other's language. Actually in my opinion, Serbian and all South Slavic languages are most similar to Slovakian language. I was in Slovakia last year with my High School, and I remember a scene in a bar where I went to the toilet with my friend, and while we were standing in line, we were telling jokes, and there were some Slovaks near us also waiting, and they laughed at our jokes, and they even talked to us a little. I almost understood everything they said. Also, my professor who is a professor of Serbian, told me that Slovakian is mostly similar to South Slavic languages.

Serbian is probably one of the hardest languages to learn, in my opinion it's harder than Russian, and you really have to speak the language for quite some time (maybe even move to Serbia) to actually get a hang of it. Our grammar is no joke. And our curse words as well, that's like one of the most essential things you absolutely have to learn if you want to speak fluent Serbian 😂 Slavic languages are the most beautiful languages on earth, you can't fight me on this one. I'm proud to say that I was raised and born in a country as beautiful as Serbia. If you ever think about going here, it won't disappoint you. Language is hard and time-consuming, but it's worth it because it has something other languages don't have. Everything about this country makes more sense when you learn the language. 😂

I really don't get how come Serbian(Serbocroatian actually, it's the same language) sounds to them like Russian. Russian is way way softer. Serbocroatian is hard on almost all the consonants especially R, SH, TZ, TCH, J, N, and TJ sounds. Also, it's more closer to Czech, Slovak and Polish than to Russian.

If they listened carefully they would notice many familiar words because Serbian is full of Latin and German words. The core is the same but we have 7 declensions (if that's the right word) so it sounds different sometimes. My Brazilian friend was amazed how many words he understood when I red him one article from newspaper, word by word. Many kids learn Latin in high school so we can see actually how many words, with Latin in it's core, Serbian language has.

im yugo and I have this weird comparison with russian and albanian , I know its weird because the languages are unique but I live in switzerland and we have a lot of albanians here so its common to hear them speak on the street and also I have friends and for me the two languages really have a similar "tone" i dunno how to explain it haha its just albanian sounds very direct you know very harsh i guess kinda "agressive" and russian is also like that and in my opinion the sound of albanian comes much more closer to russian then serbian comes to russian, serbian is more soft but thats just how I see it ....

+Heritage Inmoshun interesting videos.. I think that the way a language may sound to somebody very much depends on the specific "delivery" (verbalization, articulation... :D) that you present them with. For example, both Serbian and Russian can sound quite harsh sometime, but sometimes they are like poetry. Keep it up !

Yes. And there are transitional dialects in between. But please compare only the standard literary languages. For a russian speaker, in a nutshell, serbian has a grammar (synthetic cases for nouns, simple tense system), as well as some vocabulary beyond basic, very, very close to russian, while bulgarian share a lot of high style vocabulary with the russian but the grammar (almost no synthetic cases for nouns, elaborate tense system) is very, very different from russian.
