Description
Exploration, in general, should be carried out to a depth up to which the increase in pressure due to structural loading is likely to cause perceptible settlement or shear failure.
Significant Depth
depends upon the
Type of structure,
Its weight, size, shape
Disposition of the loaded areas
The soil profile and its properties
It is generally safe to assume the significant depth up to overburden pressure.
Alternative
A pressure bulb bounded by an isobar of one - fifth or one - tenth of the surface loading intensity is sometimes assumed to define the minimum depth of exploration.
This depth may be assumed to be equal to one - and a half or two times the width (smaller lateral dimension) of the loaded area.
The depth of exploration at the start of the work may be decided according to the following guide rules, which may need modification as exploration proceeds :
1. Isolated spread footing or raft
2. Adjacent footing with clear spacing less than twice the width
3. Pile foundations
4. The base of retaining wall
5. Floating basement
6. Dams
7. Roads, cuts and fills
8. Borrow areas
