that $65 clear is great for jambs that doesn't ever see the light of day. Iam old school I guess , no velcro paper for me...always use stick on. I use the screw on double wool pad then switch to the foam pad for the final buffing. Been using the Indasa abrasives for at least 10 years. The hell with 3M...that stands for 3 X money. I used to use ppg DP epoxy. That went away and the y went to DPLF (lead free). Thats kinda pricy so I went with the PPG Essential fleet line epoxy. Its the same except less $. Only gripe about PPG epoxy is that it contains a vinyl product so the it does not get airborne during sanding. The vinyl product gums and loads the sandpaper...frustrating. I have used the Tamco epoxy and does not load up....there are others out there. The local ppg dealer here doesn't handle shop line...they have Omni that I guess is the same...not sure. Started my shop in 1978...no internet to buy supplies...just a few jobbers.and a handfull of paint companiies.....Dupont, ppg, acme, sherwin williams, RM and a few others. How nice it is now to be able to search around for better deals on supplies. I had the good fortune to chat with a paint chemist that worked for PPG in the 80s,,,was fun to pic his brain how things were done....he worked in Ohio I believe. He said that in all the things the PPG makes...and there are a lot of them that the automotive paint side is the most profitable for them.....I dont doubt that a bit. Love your vids Pete...like your no nonsense no bullshit approach.

Love the "3m means 3 times the price" comment! LOL. Heck yeah....And stick-on sandpaper IS the ONLY paper to use when actual block sanding a car for REAL STRAIGHTNESS, as the hook it/velcro is fine for stripping, actual filler work etc. but from like even 80, 120 and so on grit when "blocking a car"? The hook-it paper WILL LEAVE grooves, lumps on the panel on your blocking process! So stick-it is fine IF ya don't wanna have to re-invest in the hook-it. Grind ON! 👍

They use to have a Trizac compound when the 3000 foam pads came out and it would break down as you polished,you only needed 1 pad and 1 compound,of course they discontinued it so you now have to buy 3 pads and 3 compounds,and you need the blue pad with the blue compound or you still have swirls.

Hey my friend Pete, you should try out and review the new Harbor Freight pps style paint cup system by Spectrum. I just bought them and very reasonably priced.
@deankay4434
@deankay4434 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct but it has only two ears to hold the cup on, so it’s kinda a copy of the first generation PPS disposable cup system. It would be fine for smaller cups with the weight of mixed product. I don’t think HF offers different size cups. The feedback from painters on the PPS system was they felt the larger cups moved, wiggled and could possibly come although none may have. This prompted PPS to come out with PPS 2.0 with 3 lugs to latch onto the adaptor, instead of 2. It is still a good choice for a guy to purchase the HF cups, just have product mixed ready to go (Depending on Time) to swap out a cup and keep going. The size of cup, how large the area to be painted have to be figured before starting the spray. I never used them but when changing directions during the spray gun & cup, just go slower without sudden fast moves. As expensive as everything is, no one wants the cup to come off, hit the floor and waist your mix.
@jamessmothers6475
@jamessmothers6475 2 жыл бұрын
@@deankay4434 I've used them and they are basically old pps system, but not interchangeable with 3m. But I have noticed the HF spectrum PPS cups fit tighter and feels more solid than the 3M PPS. Best part about ALL PPS system is the ability to spray upside down say like under package trays or wheel lips and rockers. HF PPS cups are good for entry level painters, or hobbyist that only paint once a year. But very economically priced for The D.I.Y. guys and gals. Never had a cup fall off or leak. But while painting you're not whipping a paint gun around in sudden jerking motions, steady straight passes with calculated overlaps . Remember sudden movements while painting will cause more dust in the air. When I paint I shuffle my feet instead of walking. Not saying a paint cup cant fall off, I've actually dropped my paint gun and aluminum cup snapped off in the gun. So lessons is EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE. But take your time and you WILL get results, and listen to Our friend Pete. He knows what's up. Reason I love to get his take on The HF spectrum PPS cup. I do appreciate your info and will take it into account.
@deankay4434
@deankay4434 2 жыл бұрын
@@jamessmothers6475 I completely agree that the HF cup system can be helpful for hobbies, DIY’s or complete restorations. I have never used them or seen one, just going by what others have said. HF may have beefed them up somewhat as they can’t be exact copies as that could be patent infringement. Regardless, they are useful as long as someone using them understand they may have limits. I have a Bink’s & DevilBliss but have some new style and fitted with PPS 2.0 and I agree, spaying upside down has a great benefit. I fixed vehicles, up in the air, rust spots, thin or no paint on rocker panels or the fender lip (Including over-spray) on the inner wheel house we’re all clues of a past life done wrong. Buyers purchase what dealers need for used cars. We had a truck load of Nissan Pathfinders and asked to check fluids, brakes and condition. I raised a blue on up and found the front cab to the grill painted “RED” plus a weld line left to right. Needless to say, someone bought two, welded them together and painted it. We sent it back because it was salvage! Best of luck.
@deankay4434

We will find out what Pete thinks of them James, as he just bought some at HF. Don’t get me wrong, I think these work great for the benefits and the price is right. I am a cheap bastard but I sprayed something like primer and washed the cup out and re-used it several times. I do that with zip lock baggies as I have a pile for nuts on bolts to store until ready. I drop a large note in the bag to identify the parts. I can’t get my son to do that or even photos. So, 6 months after I painted it, I have to wire the pair of electric fans, relays & fuses again. He tells me he will pay me but gives the wife the money, so still free work. Best of luck to all!

Hey Pete, working on a diy 94 Silverado Z71. Watched most of your "vidids". Bought durablocks for sanding based on your blocking video. Found out that they come setup for psa or hook and loop after eating. Did my own research and bought hook and loop since I could swap out paper (more expensive). Unfortunately, I didn't realize the paper was all so more expensive and less available at local suppliers. So, this situation has cost me more money and not less. Even though, your recemendation was spot on in theory. Thank you for hearing my complaint. Keep on providing valuable information.

Hook-it/Velcro paper is FINE for sanding body filler, or "course cut sanding" even stripping off paint etc. It's WHEN it's time to BLOCK SAND High Build Primer, and BLOCKING PANELS FOR ABSOLUTE STRAIGHTNESS (whether "start blocking with 80 grit" OR really about anything 120 grit to 150,180 grit and higher UP the sandpaper line) IS WHEN you NEED TO STAY WITH STICKY BACK SANDPAPERS! The Hook- It paper WILL CAUSE ripples in your final bodywork based off it's design. So, for someone that IS a DIY and ain't running a collision shop? Sticky back sandpaper and the blocks that use it ARE FINE/PERFECT for such. Been using sticky back for DECADES with my hobby/past business restoration work so... Get after it and get ta GRINDIN! 😎

The whole thing with 3m cubatron or purple is its a man made synthetic grit and last a long time. With Velcro or hook it you save money if you use it right. plus you can use a 5777 soft pad with it. Velcro you can take it off and reuse it until it’s worn out with stick it you tear it off and throw it away even if it’s still has good cutting power it’s wasted. So if you do a lot of body work Velcro paper will save you money. If you want a excellent epoxy for low cost try the ppg cre epoxy make sure your prep work is right it prefers a blasted substrate it’s in the fleet line. Shop line plus is the exact same thing as ppg Omni. All in all it’s a good paint line. I like the 6800 euro clear or the 6700. Jc620 to me is thin so is Jc630. But it looks as good as anything once it’s cure and wheeled. It doesn’t have the chip resistants that 6700/6800 has so on front bumper covers I’d recommend activating the base coat for a little better durability….

I disagree with you on the Shopline -- OMNI thing.. Ive used Omni and to me it's the BOTTOM OF THE BARREL stuff that PPG sells.. The Shopline Pro is equivalent to DBC and uses the same toners and binders, the only thing different is the clear.. Ill take Shopline over Omni any day and I'm sure there's dozens of people that will agree with me.. I tried the Shopline clears and the only one I like is the QUICK DRY for bumpers and collision repairs. I wasn't impressed with the Shopline clear at all.. Thanks for the comments...

The pps system of cups, liners, tops with filters built in and the quick connect fitting to put it on any gun is sold at harbor freight. The cost is way below this shop. 3m's name is not on the box but it has nothing to do with how your gun works. It shortens clean up and mess and cuts thinner usage. The gun that was on the counter is one that you toss the gun tip with each use. I saw that system a few years back and said no way. That is throwing money away every day.

I've shot that value pro clear and it was ok. I typically stick to SPI clears and primers. At the shop I worked at they had me shooting Shopline clears on high end restos. I didnt think it was that bad. Shopline base......ehh I get it on the price, but with the poor coverage of it you use more and in the end it ends up costing the same as DBC depending on the color. I switched to Automotive art Motobase and couldnt be happier honestly.

Ok just a hypothetical question here. Paint reducers offer slow medium and fast. So what is it slowing or speeding up if it's just to thin or reduce the paint? I understand hardners/Catalyst. If it's to hot and wanting a slow activator so it doesn't set to fast or a fast activator during colder Temps to help speed up. But never understood reducers as it is only thinning/reducing the paint.

Pete, need some advice. I've done filler/bondo on bare metal after doing quarter panel replacements. I'm going to paint the whole car but what should i apply on the bare metal/filler prior to paint. i'll use high build primer but should i apply epoxy sealer before hand? Years of watching you with so much knowledge seen yet i don't retain information
@diyautoschool
@diyautoschool 2 жыл бұрын
No -- You don't have to apply epoxy first -- Go straight to a High Quality 2K primer with the metal prepped to 80 grit sanding. 2 to 3 full wet coats and your ready for block sanding and painting.. THEN if you want to add a coat of epoxy right before paint, that's the time to do it! Good luck

What you have to figure on the 3m gun is it does it all by changing tip, if you go with regular guns you would be buying 3 guns for primer,base and clear.
@zed9227
@zed9227 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeremyking5684 I think two cup guns is all thats needed. But, with the disposable system, each use is going to cost 9.00-10.00, depending on the tax rate. If you prime 2 coats, sand, (possibly) prime again, sand, seal, paint, and clear, thats a minimum of 4 uses, but most likely five. That's concidering you prime, seal, paint and clear the entire car at the same time. that would be 36.00 - 45.00, possibly up to 50.00 per job. Then, there will be times when another primer or 2 srpayings would be needed. It could get up to 70.00 or even more. That adds up quick. I’d stick to the binks for cost. I’d also stick with Binks out of principal.
