I have a good bit of knowledge about computers that I taught myself. I am a senior graduate that will be taking on the major of computer technology to become computer technician. I know hardware greatly, but there is always more to learn. I have even did a VERY small bit of programming in python. I was wondering what can I do hands on my computer that will help me learn. As in what should I work on on my computer? Learning where things are and etc. My first 2 major classes are I believe intro to microsoft office and Microsoft Word I so what should I expect to learn to get a headstart?

Love your videos! I agree you deserve more views! But....... you are scaring me ha ha! Im currently studying for the comptia a+. and don't really know anything about computers but I could build one and have passion for it. Do you think I will learn enough from studying for the exam and from books to actually be able to function in a entry level I.T job? I am looking for a voluntary job but seems there are none in my current location (sad face)
@Itcareerquestions
@Itcareerquestions 8 жыл бұрын
+Deb Render Thank you so much that really means a lot to me when my viewers say those things! But....why are you scared?! If I.T. is something you feel like you have a passion for don't ever be afraid of it....nervous?? Sure! Learning new things can definitely make you nervous, but remember to use those times as a learning experience and learn to use your failures as a learning experience as well. You will learn a lot from studying for the exam, make sure you keep watching KZbin videos as well because you will learn a lot from people on here as well. Do I think it's enough though? It could be. I would keep your ear to the ground and keep looking up any internships or volunteer work. Check out non for profits - YMCA, WMCA, churches, Nursing Homes and School Districts. Cold call businesses as well. Good luck to you and don't ever be afraid! If you have any other questions please let me know!

One month into the IT field, I live by most of your advices that you have given. However, in IT, you can get SUPER busy sometimes. So, it is very true that organisation skills are extremely important. I feel that I am so behind my work and it is scary because I am not IT trained. And, I am already rostered to be the duty manager - managing service requests and my team. We have an ERP system that process all the tickets, but, I am still having a little trouble managing my team- can I use Trello to manage them, or should I ask manager before I can download it? Currently I am using an old unused diary to write down where is someone / plan ahead.
@Itcareerquestions

You should look into something like Service Desk for managing things like this. Trello could work but isn't ideal.

IT is a very broad field. Learn as much as you can at home and at school. If you know absolutely nothing about computers and technology, start with the very basics. Lookup what PC hardware is and what it does inside of a computer. If you can, consider using an old PC you may have laying around (or buy an old PC) that you don't mind experimenting with and learn. Take it apart completely to see the hardware and put it back together. There are countless guides and resources out there that explain how computers work. You just have to find the resources that work for you. Once you have a general understanding of the hardware, look into software like what an operating system is, how to install one (like Windows), what device drivers are, etc. Again, many resources out there. Once you have a general idea of basic PC troubleshooting and repair, you can start looking into more advanced IT sub-fields like computer networking, servers, systems administration, etc. Consider building a home lab if you have the means to do so. It is an invaluable way of learning.

what is your opinion on computer networking and is it a good field to get into?
@Itcareerquestions

What is the best way to prepare for a Sr. Help Desk Technician interview?
@Itcareerquestions
@Itcareerquestions 9 жыл бұрын
+Tonya Brown Well every interview is somewhat different in their own ways. Typically you won't get asked a lot of intense technical questions but on the off chance that you do just remember to remain calm and collected before you decide on the best answer. A lot of times interviewers are looking for a response that is somewhat outside of the box. Make sure you talk about your team work skills, projects that you've worked on and things like that. What I would suggest doing is looking up a standard "canned" interview questioner. Go over that and try to prepare yourself for some of the answers. With a senior tech position they are really looking for your leadership skills as well as your technical skills(you more than likely wouldn't get an opportunity of having an interview for a SR. Tech Position if you didn't already have the skills) This is all that I can offer as of right now. Good luck!
