My first BMX rebuild with out a chain in it. I really love the details, like measuring the width of the sprocket. Thanks a million RJ, you have really upped my game on repair and rebuild of bikes for our non-profit that gets used bikes to kids. The used donated bikes are so much better quality than the new box store bikes!

Your videos are so good because you include everything that someone needs to know to do it right, and they are structured in a very understandable way. I just wish I had found your video on disassembling a Sturmey Archer Dynohub instead of the random one I found - then I wouldn't now have a Dynamo ring magnet with no magnetism! I have learnt my lesson; I check you videos before going anywhere else!

I wanted to ask, I have a steel trackbike that I want to fix some bigger tires on it. I want to slide the rear wheel as far back on the horizontal dropout, but someone mentioned that adding too many links to a chain will weaken it. Have you ever experienced something like that? Thanks for reading this, hope it made sense!
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 8 жыл бұрын
No, adding a couple more links won't significantly weaken the chain.

Nice video as always. Sometimes there's a problem with chain tension which is the following. Older worn out cogs are not fully round anymore, so you need to find that point and set chain tension according to that point. If you set tension on the lowest worn point, it will be too tight on the higher/warped point.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 9 жыл бұрын
Or replace the cog/freewheel.
@OjStudios
@OjStudios 9 жыл бұрын
It's safest and easiest method. Not always possible though. If the repair can't cost anything.

A worn freewheel will wear out the chain. And vis versa.

Yea, I know that all too well. I always change parts on my own bikes regularly. There just are some people who don't care and don't wanna spend any money on repairs.

can u put the pin back in? because if not then all my bikes need master links
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 6 жыл бұрын
If you can get it back in, it will never be as strong as before. The chain will likely break at that spot. Some Shimano chains take replacement pins. I prefer master links like KMC's Missing Link.

4:20 Why can't you put the pin back to make the chain longer again? Lets say I want to remove the chain for cleaning the bike. Is the chain unsuable then and do I have to get a new one or can I put the pin back into the chain to use it again?
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 7 жыл бұрын
Pins are not designed to be reusable. The chain would likely break at that spot at some point under torque. You would need a new pin, or I prefer a master link.
@AvatarFosco
@AvatarFosco 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think I will go for a master link.
@maybedos
@maybedos 6 жыл бұрын
unless you have a chain like a 510H with those riveted pins they can go without a masterlink I used to do heavy street and grind my chain heavily during sprocket grinds never popped out but for a KMC 410 or a bell chain never ever try to re pin it, It will pop off since the pins are not riveted.

KMC 410 is very cheap classic chain they last me like 3-6 months while a 410H can last me a solid 6 months but my all time favorite the 510H lasted me 2 years with heavy street bmx on concrete and park only got rid of it for a new lime green 410 for my 98' GT Performer. I wouldn't dare use a 410 or 410H for heavy bmx just for casual riding and for more park riding chain.
