Choosing tyres is like eating cheesecake, we all know what the right size portion is but we think bigger is better and always end up with more on our plates...

Finally upgraded from having the tyres that came on the Prado new in 2017 to the 265/70R17 KO2’s. Love them and they feel far more suited to the car than the original tyres. No negatives yet except for not being able to fit the spare wheel cover even though others say it still fits. Went KO2’s due to your recommendation so appreciate the content you post.

2015 Prado with 265/70-17s. Falken Wildpeaks because I got them cheap. 65% road, 30% beach and 5% track. Good beach tyre because it bulge well. Use 70s for more surface area on sand.

Cheers Anthony for being a beacon of common sense. I’ve got a 2017 150 2.8. Currently running Dunlop AT22 265/65/17 which I picked up cheap near new for $250 after running the stock tyres for nearly 105k. My driving is about 97% freeway 2% gravel 1% beach. So going for an aggressive AT is a waste of money for me. I was about to pull the trigger on some Falken AT3 265/70/17 but the cheap deal with the AT22’s popped up. In hindsight saved a ton of cash and probably be safer on the highways. Once again buddy cheers for all you do for the Prado community.

Thanks Anthony, great video. VIC, 2011 Prado 150. Wish I had watched it before upgrading to 265/70/17 KO2s. Great all round but did notice the faster acceleration down steep muddy terrain and used more break than on my old worn 265/65/17 AT3s. As a result have been giving the DAC a crack and once you get used to the noise and action, it does have its use when very steep.

I learnt this on my 80 Series when I when up to 285's on standard rims. Puts the gearing out which I noticed because it was a manual. And I was doing a lot of off-road hard work. Now my Prado has a 6 speed auto, kept to the standard size as it has already 2 overdrive gears, 5 & 6. At new I paid to swap to KO BFG's as I have run BFG since 1996 on various Toyota Landcruisers. Just replaced the tyres @ 4 years 40k because we went straight ahead on a wet roundabout, and it drove like it was on cement tyres. That's the trouble with BFG's they last too long and get hard and can be harder to balance. The standard Dunlop tyres give you a much better, quite, safer ride and more fuel efferent around town and on the highway. Believe the KO2's have been improved but I have not run on these. And these days don't go bush that much! Not knocking BFG tyres but don't waste money changing if you're not going out into the dirt.

In South-East Melb, and our stock 2015 Prado is a 265-60-R18. Currently with Toyo Open Country A/T. Seems to work just fine so have no plans to change. We don't do hard tracks and only need the offroad for prospecting, so most areas we go to aren't extreme.

Melb Vic 265/65/17 Prado 120 BFG KO2... My first prado i had in 2003 i ran 285/75/16 in both Goodyear MTR and Interco Trxus both big solid tyres, the Trxus were beasts, but I had to grind down the brake callipers to fit them and bash in the floor, the unsprung weigh of the Trxus gave the suspension a hiding. Prior to the Prado i ran a GU Patrol with 36" Swampers. I have matured since then and now the standard size suits in a AT - Like Anthony said Fuel economy and keeping things standard makes sense to me.

Ur right stick to the standard wheel size I was told that 275 was ok & legal on my ranger that was 265 but I ended up putting small flares on as they were sticking out slightly & I didn’t want to come across a cop that was needing to get his tickets up keep up the great info 😎👍

2005 LC5 (rear air suspension) in the UK. Running 265/65/17 Yokohama G015, all season snowflake and mountain stamped so winter rated. Lots of wet weather in UK, these grip well in all weathers, a bit squashy on hot dry roads, softish sidewall, fairly quiet running, wearing well, will replace with the same or maybe try Falken's new AT with winter rating next time.

I recently went to 265/70R16 from 265/75R16 as the tyre professional said it was the largest tyre he could legally fit. I can’t even see the difference, the on road handling improved significantly. The rpm increased a little, couldn’t be happier.

Ok so by running a wider tyre your definitely changing the footprint and adding drag but Anthony are you considering the change of ratio as long as it is running in the torque band of the diesel on the motor your saving a hell of a lot of revolutions and returning far better fuel economy? I had to keep fairly comprehensive fuel and km records for my work so I have looked into this. Firstly I always use the GPS logged km and GPS speed over ground (not the dash) and completely ignore odo and speedo so that the distance is the actual distance, speed is speed and the fuel is the fuel put in the tank. Admittedly my driving is mostly open road not stop go etc. So the original tyres 205/70/16 on the 2013 Hilux were running for 100 - 105km/h at 2800rpm and regularly it was returning 9.5L per 100km up till it was about 30,000km old. Then I swapped to 225/75/16 and in the same speed range it was running 9.2L per 100km. This size stayed on till about 140,000km and slowly the fuel economy has drifted higher. Next tyre size tried from 140k - 230,000km was 235/85/16 and they regularly return 9.0L per 100km and in the 100km to 105km/h it is doing 2100rpm. Your a mechanic with an OBD meter and know these motors inside out so I defer to your professional knowledge and experience but you should be able to see the variation of the delivered volume of diesel per revolution. From 2150rpm to 2800 is a 30%, if the computer isn't loading injector with 30% volume per revolution it has to be saving fuel? Surely this isn't opinion, a motor doing fewer rpm has to use less diesel as long as it isn't labouring and the electronic injection is compensating? What am I not getting? 650rpm difference has to add up, it certainly does in real world driving. Over an hour driving you have a total of 156,000 fewer injections The down side to 235/85/16 is they are definitely slower on take off, fully loaded and towing 5th isn't used anywhere near as much. The upside is measured 55mm gained clearance and you can get 235/85/16 tyres everywhere and 7.5R16 will do as a spare if you can't.

BFG ko2. 265/70r17 on MY14 Prado 150. Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Pro’s - Revs when towing, psychologically - more clearance off road, Speedo 100% accurate, easily available size ? Con’s - Fuel economy, acceleration.

(2012 1kd hilux) Problem is with the bfgs are the high load ratings make them so heavy. My 265 65 17, 265 70 17 and 285 70 17 ko2s all gave me about the same economy. The 285s were the lower load rating (ranger raptor gets them standard) so they were lighter which inturn made them comparable to the other sizes. The 285s give only a slight decrease in power over the 265 65 17 size again due to the load rating. Over the years I've learnt that if you want big tyres buy a patrol or cruiser and if you want a comfortable, economical, great handling vehicle stick to the standard size.

285/70/17 Falken Wildpeak on 2009 120 1KD with 0 offset steelies. Great traction off-road however I keep another set of stockie Bridgestone Ecopia as I do so much road driving during the week. Pain in the ass swapping over when want to hit the tracks but it’s for the fuel consumption and comfortability of a thinner tyre. Falkens do scrub on the upper control arms, mudflaps and mudguard and full lock but quite minuscule and have been told not to worry about, running 45mm lift as well and I’ve heard the full 2in lift doesn’t scrub with 33’s so prehaps I should’ve gone the extra 5mm🤷♂️ (South Gippsland)

Also must say when I bought the vehicle it came with barely roadworthy 265/65/17 dunlop grand treck AT and first thing I did was climbed one of the most infamous tracks in Vic HC (Billy Goat Bluff in the drizzle) without lift and didn’t have many dramas at all, so Anthony’s right when he says they’re a good intimidate option for a Prado.
