Nostalgia hit like a truck when they started singing the Slam Dunk theme song. It was gigantic here in the Philippines; even as someone who never cared for basketball, I still ended up watching it just because it was always showing and was what everybody watched.

I was watching DanDaDan on Netflix and I inmediately recognized the song, Slam Dunk was huge in here Latin America, but the scene in DanDaDan was kept in Japanese, despite me watching the Latin American Spanish dub version, which is a shame since Slam Dunk's OP and ED where adapted into Spanish, at least the subtitles kept the Spanish adaptations of both songs. The Spanish version of Kimi ga Suki da to Sakebitai was sung Adrián Barba who also sung Dragon Ball Z's second OP and ED and he was also Quasimodo's singing voice in Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. DanDaDan has al alternate dub made by Crunchyroll, I hope that in that version they could sang both songs. I also find it kind of interesting that Okarun's voice actor in Netflix's Latin American Spanish dub, José Luis Piedra, voiced Sota Miyagi in The First Slam Dunk, while Peeny-Weeny in Netflix's dub is voiced by Irwin Dayaán, who voiced Yuji Okusu in the original Slam Dunk and reprised his role in The First, while Peeny in Crunchyroll's dub is voiced by Óscar Flores who was Kaede Rukawa's second voice in the original Slam Dunk as well Speaking about Slam Dunk's Latin American Spanish dub, the main character, Hanamichi Sakuragi was voiced by René García, who's well known for voicing Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z and he's also the usual dub voice for Keanu Reeves and now he's voicing Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic 3's dub

Slam Dunk was also huge in the '90s Taiwan as well. So popular I think it might help in giving Taiwan its own professional basketball league. Even if you're not into this particular anime, you'll know the songs because there's a constant rerun of this anime in cable tv, up to the 2000s and maybe even now.

The producers of Dandadan has MONEY considering they licensed usage of all these songs and references that I'm sure are copyrighted.
@B3RyL
@B3RyL 2 күн бұрын
Those are all 80's and 90's commercial and anime songs. I'm sure you can license them for pittance or even free, and they'll appreciate you for even asking. In my personal experience, I had to negotiate with the label that holds the rights to Kalimba by Mr Scruff for use in our commercial project. If you're not familiar with Kalimba, I don't blame you, though if you heard it now and are over 25 years old, you'll immediately recognise it - it's the song that plays the first time you open Windows Media Player on Windows 7. Long story short, we asked them to license it, and they just said we could use it for free, and they were super nice about it. We shared some memories and jokes about Win7 and that was it.

License?????? Slamdunk and DandaDan are both Jump comics 😂 EDIT: since my comment got a lot of likes, lemme explain... Japanese copyright laws (著作権法 Chosakukenhō?) consist of two parts: "Author's Rights" and "Neighbouring Rights." As such, "copyright" is a convenient collective term rather than a single concept in Japan. They say the copyright law is in sync with most international regulations. There are 3 actors : the composer, the producers and the broadcasters (wire diffusers). In anime production like pointed before, producers and broadcasters seem to be the same. Therefore, music rights are owned by the composer and the studio that distributed it, hence Jump. 😉 This is why most anime can sing/show references from other anime as well as long as it's from same studio. Otherwise, application for licensing is needed (like how other animé are referencing the Dragon Ball series, albeit in a parody manner).

Free Possibility↓ You must pay royalties to the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC). JASRAC collects royalties from music distribution services, karaoke, broadcasting, CDs, etc., and distributes them to songwriters and composers. Examples of JASRAC's music usage fees are as follows: For streaming video distribution services, the minimum fee is 5,000 yen per month. If the number of days that the content is available for transmission is up to 5 days, the daily fee is 1,000 yen. For download video distribution services, the annual and monthly fees vary depending on the number of songs that can be transmitted simultaneously. In addition, JASRAC has the following exceptions: Since it has concluded comprehensive license agreements with broadcasting companies such as NHK and commercial broadcasters, no application form or payment of royalties is required for use in broadcast programs. If an author uses his or her own work himself or herself, he or she can use it without paying royalties to JASRAC, provided that he or she obtains the consent of all relevant rights holders. If you use a cover song of a JASRAC-registered song that you have performed and sung yourself in a KZbin video, you do not need to obtain permission from JASRAC or pay a separate usage fee.

Speaking as somebody who surely has greater familiarity with Japanese pop culture than 99% of folks outside Japan, I can pretty much guarantee you that when these moments happen in the show, most viewers are doing one of two things: either assuming it's just part of the show's overall weirdness, or recognizing that it's yet another reference to something but that's it. These things are way too specific to Japan for the vast majority to actually recognize them.

How can you not know the ending song of slamdunk. The most logical reason is not actually watching the whole show, just remembering listening to the OP if the show comes on. It would be a great idea to explain more the differences between the personal pronouns Momo and Okarun use. Okarun uses "jibun" (while I do recognize it's the same one the actor Ken Takakure once used), and Momo uses "Uchi". Very different from the ones I've usually heard like "watashi, atashi, ore and boku". I would really appreciate if you could make an in depth video about it 😄. Love your videos!

If I use "boku" even though I'm an adult, I come across as very childish or unreliable. "Ore" is a bit intimidating. As an adult, I want to use "watashi" but it sounds a bit pretentious and embarrassing. So I often use "jibun" (myself). I'm sorry. I'm clumsy. When I was in junior high school, a girl in my class called me "boku" and I felt uncomfortable, but I felt like it opened a new door.

I still wish they could have gotten ABBA's Chiquitita for the Gig Worker Alien. I had the song stuck in my head for WEEKS after I read that scene in the manga and I wish it had done the same for anime watchers, too.

1:17 Vamo lá! (1993) = Let's go !

The slam dunk basketball move they were doing when translated in my country is also called a ”box out” move. They were figuratively fighting for Momo’s affection. ”Boxing out is a way to block an opposing player with your body to prevent them from getting a rebound. The technique is so effective, in fact, that a shorter player can out-rebound a taller player!”

そんなに古いのオカルンよくしってるよね。ep12はオカルンとジジの掛け合い面白かった バスケの歌ってぜんぜん知らなくてその場で2人が自作して歌ってるのかと思ってた。

My weeb limiters were pushed in order to recognize Okarun singing the 1st Slam Dunk opening. And I only recognized it because, coincidentally, I'm looking to buy the new, fancy schamcy, Slam Dunk Spanish edition of the manga, and I went to rewatch the intro recently.
