The rock and roll ballot-box is stuffed with votes and the exit polls suggest how this week’s debate might play out. Along these lines …
… is there still such a thing as British music?
… John Lennon as a lavatory attendant.
… Pink Floyd’s miming lessons.
.. how Neil Finn cheered up the All Blacks.
… the staggering difference in the UK album charts in the weeks the last two Labour Prime Ministers were elected (1997 and 2024) - male British bands v international female solo acts.
… ‘Starman’ on Top Of The Pops and the tricks it plays on the memory.
… “current chart acts are either in the spotlight or don’t seem to exist at all.”
… the wit and wisdom of James Blunt.
.. the Herd’s guest spot in the Tom Courtenay caper Otley.
… the Phil Collins syndrome: “when people are tired of duffing up pop stars, they tend to re-embrace them”.
… plus birthday guest Richard Lewis and songs that should be longer - eg Dancing the Night Away by the Motors, I Can Fly by the Herd (cue military bugle and church bell and choir).

The video for So Macho was amusing. Men trying to impress/measure up to Sinitta by a swimming pool and being rebuffed tickled my schoolboy ribs in the late 80s. I can't recall her other songs. Simon should have been in the video. Simon was in the video for Club Tropicana serving drinks to George and Andrew in a Panama hat and a fake handlebar moustache. If you don't believe that was Cowell behind the bar at 'Club Tropicana' then go take a look at the video. I think you'll find I'm right. Either that or I'm stoned and my brain is on the slide...

It's probably been done to death in comments below ( but I can't be arsed to read through to check ) but John Cales 4'33" should have a 12 inch remix taking it to at least 9'23"

Excellent segment at the end about songs that are too long or not long enough 🌅 Interestingly The Doors come to mind, as some their remastered songs & albums have a handful of seconds added to the ends of some.songs as well as the fantastic clean up that contemporary digital technology allows. They also remind me of another potential category, which is 'Albums that are shorter than you think' , with one of their albums, Waiting For The Sun, clocking in at less than 33 minutes. This is more remarkable, when you consider there are 11 songs on there. But I digress. Their fourth album, The Soft Parade, contains the title song right at the end of the album, which isn't unusual. However, it's too long, and while their previously longer songs are beautiful works of art, this doesn't necessarily benefit from being more than 8 minutes long.

How about an intro that should go on longer, the 12" single version of Soft Cell's 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye', the most sublime 3 minutes and 30 seconds of clarinet music since Acker Bilk's 'Stranger On The Shore'.

I love the shortness of songs that feel too short. “Breaking Glass” should never feel long enough.

I’ve always wanted the lovely jazzy trombone solo at the end of The Kinks’ Dead End Street to go on forever. Also the wonderfully exciting brass-led outro of McCartney’s ‘Take it Away’

What songs should be longer or shorter? 1326pm 14.7.24 i think napalm death still hold the record for the shortest song at 0.34th of a second or some such. you could get a copy with some fanzine circa 1989 i think..... look it up!!! i am probably out by a 10th of a second or some such.... and dead kennedy's, eat your heart out rock wakeman, i like 'short songs' is also nice... i always sued to encourage the composer of killdozer ditties to lend a bit of reverb and feedback out and express himself with a whole heap of noise..... it worked for the live shows... but miserably so for recorded skits. helter skelter really needed to be a 20 minute number. this would have knocked spots of can's penchant for lengthy wowzers. supper's ready by genesis. is still a moniker which makes me laugh... he whips out his genesis record i say what is it he says: supper's ready... i laugh. childhood recollection complete. cheers...

I'm quite cynical about this, because I've rarely found the music I care for anywhere near the pop charts in the last few decades. In my view, the current dominance of 'solo' artists (as opposed to bands) is because producers can manufacture, sequence and quantize the musical backing without having to put up with much interaction with pesky musicians. Then they can get the singer "in" to do the vocals and voila! Tins of beans. There's nothing inherently wrong with the technology - I hasten to add - just with the way it's often used. And I'm only referring to the most commercial stuff at the top of the charts. My daughter is 18 and finds stuff slightly to the side of modern music that is manufactured similarly, but which has originality and artistry enough to take her to the stars, or move her to tears: just like the Beatles, Stones, Motown and Atlantic Soul did for me when I was a kid. What her generation don't have, yet, is a Grateful Dead or a Doors or a Velvet Underground or a Pixies. Perhaps the pendulum will swing back?

This may not be what you are talking about but I have a couple of suggestions for lengthening songs 1 The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Know I can listen to that on endless repeat. However, I am not sure that repeating the same song is the same as having an extended version. HOWEVER... 2 - Caravan - Limits This finishes the album "If I could do it all over again, I would do it all over you." The song is 1 minute and 36 seconds and if it continued for another 10 minutes, I could still be wanting more. The flute solo starts and then just fades away. That is a tragedy. IF I COULD SQUEEZE IN ONE MORE 3 - My Bloody Valentine - Come In Alone I find this song totally hypnotic. It ends at about 4 minutes and that breaks the mood. That is not fair. Post script - a couple more Boris - Just Abandoned Myself - Live 19 May 2017, Max Watts, Melbourne Totally hypnotic. 14 minutes 40 seconds...and I would not complain if it were longer. Popol Vuh - Why Do I Still Sleep? Why does this have to ever end? Okay, I will stop now before I think of any more examples Keep up the good work

Okay, this is way, way outside the box. I am not a free jazz fan but sometimes I think that magic can be captured Albert Ayler's final show, Nuits De La Fondation Maeght, France 1970 They do a version of "Music Is the Healing Force of the Universe". The video only lasts 2 and a half minutes, but I want more. There is clearly magic there. Henry Cow - Keeping Warm in Winter-Sweet Heart of Mine From "Concerts". The song is about 10 minutes and the first 8 minutes is a hard slog through a free improvisation. And from almost nowhere there are a couple of chords on the piano and the guitar holds some notes...and it is just magical for a couple of minutes before it fades away. I have often thought that I really like the end, because the beginning is so difficult. I would love the final walk out into the sun to be longer.

Limits is such a blissful track. Yes, yes, yes, to the idea of a longer Limits. The flute solo is one of the most beautiful things I've ever had the pleasure to have heard.

It seems a trifle ungrateful and slightly sacrilegious to complain that Mother Sky is too brief at 12:20. Can have a few much longer songs but that one I could listen to for longer with all four musicians in their pomp on that track.
