So it turns out the Sonic Adventure 2 & 1 remakes were confirmed a thing, but NOT for the 30th anniversary. They were planned for PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Wii U for 2015 release, but they were scrapped due to the failure of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric! I'd much rather have a bad version than no version of a remake at all. Afterall, this might have been good and we would have both the original and these. I heard it wasn’t gonna be a Wii U exclusive, it was gonna be multi platform , but Sega at the LAST MINUTE made a deal with Nintendo, so the developers of sonic boom(BigRedButton) had to go back to change a lot of stuff, because the Wii U couldn’t handle the engine they used in the making of sonic boom, and I think that’s what fucked up the game. I heard another thing, Sonic boom wasn’t even gonna be called sonic boom, it was gonna be called sonic synergy, but they had to change that because Sega got a cartoon deal or something idk. There is a bunch of footage of sonic synergy on KZbin, and by the looks of it, it didn’t look bad, it actually looked kind of good. I’m not sure if all this is true or not, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Makes sense. This was around the time when Izuka said that they weren’t interested in revisiting Adventure styled Sonic because “they wanted to look forward not backwards” despite the 2010 games almost focusing exclusively on Classic Sonic based nostalgia. Of course, that changed around the time when the Crash N Sane Trilogy came out and others followed like Spyro and even Mario. THAT’S when they all of a sudden said “you know, maybe someday we’ll do something like that.”

This set of remakes were cancelled in 2014-2015 and were made by a different studio. It's worth keeping that in mind for the people who are saying this deconfirms that Adventure remakes will happen. This was 6 six years ago that this happened, before Forces was even being made. I see no reason why after the reception they got for that, they revisited the idea, but now with Sonic Team making it. Remember Iizuka even said in 2018 he wants to do it.

As a huge sonic fan since 2009, I hate the way Sega is treating our blue buddy. Sega KNOWS that 06 was bad, they KNOW that RoL was terrible, and they KNOW that Forces was piss poor. So the reason they were cancelled was because of Sega's incompetence. Rise of Lyric which was handled by a competent team of developers who were screwed over so hard by Sega. In the months leading to it's release, people started leaving in droves because they had to port a pc game to the Wii U which didn't the engine the game used, forcing them to simplify the game. Even though ROL isn't even related to the Adventure series, they used that as an excuse to just classic pander.

Honestly I'm glad this didn't happen. That studio doesn't have the greatest track record and I can certainly say I wouldn't have trusted them with adventure remakes. Of course with Sonic team it's a complete gamble if a remake (or any game for that matter) will be any good but I would trust them over Sega Shanghai. Also if Sega were trying to use it to appeal to China then I certainly wouldn't have trusted it as using an older game to get China in on Sonic sounds like a bizzare strategy to say the least. However I still believe adventure remakes are more than likely in development. Back in 2014 remaking games was still kind of a niche thing and as such I can see why Sega felt comfortable cancelling the games. That's not the case anymore. There is clear demand for remakes of older 3D platformers. Not only that, Sega are known to copy wider industry trends and as such I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say they've since restarted the projects (possibly from the ground up).

Premy keeping it fucking REAL this is why we love your content man! It's time people stopped making excuses for Sega. It's like a religion at this point, a cult. But Sega isn't a divine being, it's a business. And the number 1 purpose of a business is to provide a product/service (sometimes both.) They make a game, we give them money. It is not unreasonable for us to expect quality for those games, and the decisions they make surrounding those games. If they make bad calls, then it's perfectly reasonable to call them out. Doesn't mean we hate them personally, we just want the quality that is worthy of the money. And as fans of series, those fans are more likely to give them money as they have personal interests. Fans also provide free advertisement basically though the generation of content like art and memes or even just talking about the series. So fans should have even more of a right to expect them to make good decisions, since they're the ones more likely to give them that money which they want at the end of the day. And it doesn't matter if it's Sonic Team, individual people, the corporate suits, the investors, whatever, they all fall under Sega so the fault lies in many areas. It should not be up to us to find the specific faults and problems, Sega should be the ones figuring it out, but seems they're still struggling. (Rant over)

Personally, I'm not fully convinced. During the same year they green-lit Sonic Mania and didn't cancel SB: Fire & Ice. Additionally, the game should have been mostly done by early 2015 if they planned a 2015 release. That said, I just don't think things add up and I don't believe there's enough info to consider it fact.

I wouldn't have minded the Modern voice cast being in the cancelled remakes but the dealbreaker for me is having Pontaff write the scripts. I have no ill will towards them personally but I hate the way they've written the series. I woudn't want them bastardizing the original scripts with kiddy bullshit, changing characters to how they act these days, lame jokes and ruining classic lines so we dodged a bullet.

I still can’t believe they thought it was a good idea to put all of their eggs in one basket with rise of lyric and then outsource it to a whole different studio all while being a Wii U exclusive. Now we know that, whatever they will announce this year, if anything, it won't be the Adventure remakes... Still hopping for Adventure style gameplay, or at least a boost game with multiple playable characters, like Forces but bigger in every aspect. Would hate for Sonic to once again be the only playable character. Am I the only one that feels like sonic games sometimes fall short because Sega just isn't confident in their games? Especially when they stepped into boom, I know that the games kind of sucked miserably. But the original ideas big red button had for boom were amazing, Sega just wanted to change a lot of it. The Sonic Movie is the pure definition of confidence, hence why its execution was so well done.

I really, REALLY was hoping for the 30th anniversary to be AMAZING. As far as I'm concerned, everything that we want, isn't coming until NEXT YEAR, despite the fact that is supposed to be SONIC'S YEAR. We could of had an ADVENTURE REMAKE, which we never got because Rise of Lyric failed because it was too powerful for the Wii U, which was a STUPID deal to make with Nintendo in the first place, then blame Big Red Button for Rise of Lyric's flop despite Sega rushing them, then give or take another 4 YEARS only to get another main game to flop because of the time they spent formulating the engine instead of the actual game itself. And here we are again waiting YET ANOTHER give or take 4 YEARS and were sitting still waiting for one more screw up. I agree with SpeedSuperSonic when he says Sonic is a multimedia franchise. And he isn't wrong. TV Shows, Movies, Comics, Merchandise, the works: All of these factors are in play when it comes to a multimedia franchise. However, by that logic, POKEMON IS A MULTIMEDIA FRANCHISE. And, with this logic in mind, you don't hear Pokemon fans complaining about their fanbase's games having nothing but insipid mediocrity and notoriously bad puns. It doesn't, and SHOULDN'T matter if Sonic is a multimedia franchise, because at the end of the day, he only got to BE a multimedia franchise by being a VIDEO GAME FRANCHISE in the first place. It doesn't matter how good the other Sonic products are, because he's failing in the area he was created for in the first place. Isn't Sega ashamed? They are the number 1 video game company during the WORST year in history. They have turned a profit and made the most money, as in more money than any other video game company, especially Nintendo, and all because they haven't made a Sonic game. Not even a random game like Team Sonic Racing. They profited from not using their own mascot. SHAME!!! We were making excuses for them and they, not only, surpassed every other game company in sales during 2020, but they were also donated 900 MILLION DOLLARS from Nexus because even Nexus knows Sega might screw up the next game. I'd personally prefer the Adventure games getting a new remaster on console and PC before getting full-on remakes. A lot of stuff people say against it mainly applies to the Gamecube ports because most people won't pop onto Steam and get the mods like a dedicated fan would, so if we restored and enhanced the Dreamcast experience for consoles the way BetterSADX and such do, we'd have a much better roadmap of opinions on what a remake could actually improve. Oh, and while we're at it, Secret Rings remaster with motion control options intact, since they help make the game actually good.
