What Sporran Should You Wear with a Great Kilt?

More and more gents are opting to wear the Feileadh Mòr (the great kilt) instead of a regular tailored kilt. The great kilt is fun to wear, comfortable and has a unique “primal” look that speaks to many men - especially those drawn to history or rugged living.
And of course lots of gents donn and great kilt to participate in history related activities like living history events, Society for Creative Anachronism events like the Pennsic War and even Renaissance fairs or LARPs.
So…what styles of sporran look best with the great kilt? Can you wear a modern design or is a historic sporran such as the Rob Roy the best way to go?

I have not worn a great kilt (yet) but I see it as going one of two ways: either you emulate as much of a period look as you want to, or you depart from tradition and basically enjoy your own look as creatively or functionally as you please. I tend to prefer a traditional look for myself, but I am not a rules (rhymes with Yahtzee) when it comes to what others wear (except perhaps concerning those who truly want to be neo-Yahtzees).

When I’m wearing a great kilt a sporranchain/strap it is resting on the top of the kilt. My sporranstraps are modified ponyreins.

One reason I said no belt loops, is the one I ordered had an option for belt loops to be sewn on. I forgot that isn't standard... And another thing too was a sporran not having belt loops. I forgot to break those two parts of the question away from one another. Thanks again for the info! I have the great kilt arriving Tuesday, hopefully, and I'll officially figure this out.

My period pouch sporran has straps that allow me to hang it from my belt. It works much like sporran hangers would. I also wear it on my hip rather than in front.

I've shared a few pictures in the K&C group page in the past of my fèileadh mòr where it might be hard to tell, but I tend to don the fèileadh like normal, set the top half how I want it to hang, flip the tail up, put my sporran on, then let the tail hang like usual. While I don't necessarily suffer from noassatall syndrome, the excess fabric over top helps to hold it in place.

When I wear my Feileadh Mòr, my main 2” belt has a simple double prong buckle and I wear a hunting sporran on a standard leather sporran strap instead of a chain. I find that the bulk of the kilt keeps the sporran where I want it and provides the ability to rotate the sporran to the side.

When wearing a great kilt (when I reenact) I wear a belt pouch on the belt I wear to keep the kilt on.

+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the historian prerspective.* The great kilt proper for Renaissance-Faire reenactors accepts a unique class o' _Sporran_ suitable for belt and baldric. The scabbard for a _Durgh_ is riggable for said belt and baldric.

Update: I finally got my great kilt, figured out how to put it on, and found a good method to wear my sporran. I loop the sporran strap through the back of my belt. Even if it's a little cockeyed, you couldn't be able to see it because of the plaid. It worked very well all day at the Highland Games on Saturday! If I ever make it to the store, chances are, I'll probably wear my great kilt and sporran to show you guys!

I suggest a little book called "So You're Going to Wear the Kilt" by Scotty Thompson; in it you'll find simple, solid information about the kilt. I've also used the pattern in it to Make my own pouch sporrans (modern ones seldom have any room in them.) The book also has patterns/instructions for other Scottish apparel accessories.

Make a loop and put it in the back of your main belt. Nobody will ever see it. The volume of the top of the kilt will hide all sins
