What Tank Should You Play In WoW?

Hi everyone! Last video we talked about taking the first steps into tanking by adressing tank anxiety and how i overcame it! today we are talking about the different tanks and what tank you should pick!

As a tank main, I keep up the leather tanks and dabble in plate. Here are my thoughts 01) Prot Pally - this is the easiest tank to be bad at, but once you get proficient at it... you just bring so much to a M+ team. Battle Rez. Offheals. Major party defensives. Plenty of Interrupts. This is the one I have played the least because I am bad at it, but the potential is there. They have been a good place for a while now 02) Blood DK - this may be the meta of smaller keys. From my experience, the playstyle revolves around managing rune power while taking hits & just healing yourself right back up. As a tank, I really don't like that playstyle. In theory Blood will always fall a few key levels behind other tanks simply because the initial hits start hitting too hard. However in lower keys (20 or less) Blood is extremely hard to kill and death grip is just the best ability in the game. Plus, battle rez for pugs is a must. 03) Prot Warrior - imo they feel like one of the tankier tanks in the game. They mitigate a lot of damage, able to spell reflect magic, and they bring a group damage buff. However, they're hit box feels really small to me and when ads are spread out or moving, feels like I sometimes miss a global because im out of range or tab targeting the wrong one. They do have an AoE taunt and Thunderclap to help with that. They also seem to be the most healer-reliant tank in the game, and I'm not a fan of that either. I play it when Im bored. 04) Brewmaster Monk has a ton of buttons. I'm talking it is the only class I've played where the 13 button mouse I have, plus the shift-13 buttons, and the main 3 keybinds (Q-E-F) are not enough. You'll need another control-13 button tab to finish out all of their spells. (outside of my 3 keyids right by my movement keys on my left hand, i use my right thumb for all my mouse buttons.) There are some options in the talent tree where you can choose passive defensives over an on use as well as passive talents instead of spells (press the advantage vs weapons of order for instance,) but that won't be the most efficient way to play in a lot of scenarios. The stagger mechanic is the most unique playstyle of all tanks, and they are generally the strongest dps of tanks... however they have been overshadowed by DH this season. Last season they were basically glass cannons, which made it extremely rewarding/fun to play. Very mobile. Strong tier set this season. Bring a physical damage buff to the team. 05) Vengeance DH - I have the hardest time of all tanks with aggro on Vengeance. Outside of Immo Aura, which doesnt have a "short" CD, VDH doesn't have any insta AoE threat. Flame Sigil can be pre-cast going into a pack, which helps, but you won't have it every pull. Spirit bomb takes 3 globals to use: Fracture, Fracture, Spirit Bomb. So in pugs when big AoE specs go ham as soon as I jump in... I personally find it the hardest to keep & then pull back the lost aggro. With that being said, I have mained VDH for a few seasons over the years and this current version feels the best it's ever been. Extreme mobility. You can single-handily CC very large packs by yourself (AoE stun, melee interrupt, then 2 silences, 2 fears, 2 chains... all aoe sigils.) Vengeance has the highest M+ damage of all tanks as well as buff the casters in your group. They have access to cheat death in talents as well as a trinket option if they want duel cheat. They have strong self heals when attacking enemies as well. They have a large health pool as well as one of the best resistances to magic damage. It's a fun class, but might not be the best option for new tanks starting out. 06) Bear - The good ol guardian druid. Imo this is the easiest tank to play. The rotation is fairly small. They have a slew of defensives to rotate through. Incarn might be the most fun dual use offensive/defensive in the game. You have a battle rez. You can off heal a good amount with passive talents as well as Dream of Cenarius procs. I mained bear last season. Mained VDH this season, and somehow my bear hit 3k io before my VHD thus far haha. Bear is just fun. You never worry about losing aggro as Thrash/swipe can be cast on CD to pick up a ton of ads you cant target individually. You can pull things from a long distance with Moonfire. You 4-5 self heals to rotate through. You can keep your active mitigation up (ironfur) pretty much 100% of the time. Once you get the rageheart, your shielding yourself so much through Ursoc Fury and the tier set on Rage of the Sleep that you outheal the healers. Let me be clear, any of these tanks can (and do) time 24 keys (which equates to about 3250io ish.) Only a small percentage of the WoW population run higher content, and the "meta classes" only matter in the highest of high end M+ content. So if you're just starting out & wanting to learn a tank... play what you like & what you can get better at the easiest. If I'm recommending a beginner tank, I think I would tell people Bear or Blood DK. But I may be biased to Bear :)

Prot Pala has tons of CC? It has a single target stun on a 45s CD. Nobody runs Blinding Light. It’s great at interrupting but it does not have CC

@@dojyr3130 I should have stated that more clearly. I view multiple interrupts as CC. But again, Pally is also the tank Im the worst at and play the least. The prot pally I run with on my alts dps toons finishes the dungeon with a crazy number of interrupts, alot that are passive apparently

I ran my vet first key as a tank after watching your last video. (I've always been a healer)I started a +2 BRH and i told the group i was new to tanking and they were pretty patient and it went very well. We 3 chested it. At the end, we all agreed to do another key and went to a +4 AD and we 3 chested it too. I played as a blood DK and it was surprisingly fun

I mained blood dk since the end of Legion, an recently in Dragonflight I switched to prot warrior. Just soo refreshing not taking damage, and the movement after the DK is nice. Charges, leaps… no more wheelchair 😃

ive been maining my vengeance demon hunter since legion, and maybe its a biased experience but ive always felt borderline unkillable and found the spec really easy (probably just feels easy to me bc ive been playing it for so long lol) genuinely has made it hard for me to play other classes bc i forget they can't glide down from high spots and pull everything in an area at once and live 😂 i 100% recommend vengeance to anyone, even beginners, it's complicated at times but once muscle memory develops its so rewarding

It's the best spec. You're an invincible God of war. You only need the rest of the party to speed up your battles lol. But yeah once you get into it the stress goes away.

the only tank i struggled with is brewmaster. theres like tons of buttons. the one i enjoyed so far is prot pally. i main a BDK before but i had few problems with it especially with rune power management

I was a hybrid NE warrior tank in vanilla. In BC I stopped tanking due to the game mechanics and well warrior tanking sucked in BC. Last year I decided to try tanking again and made a low lvl warrior tank but didn’t go far. About 6 months ago I made a pally tank and I’m loving it. As an alt I have gotten him up to around 455 iLvl.

I was a raid warrior tank in vanilla and quit in TBC. It is a damn shame they took away our stances brother. What are your thoughts on the other tanks? What gives you that good ol’ tank feel aside from the paladin?

@@kozmo7 to be honest nothing really does. The game we knew full of thinking and strategies is now go go go let’s get it done quick. I remember UBRS and others taking a hour or more to do with a good group even a little bit quicker with raid group to rage quitting because it takes to long or no gear drops and so on.

Only reason I love pally tanking is better control of adds and self healing. Thunder clap was good for that but that was when everyone was dps’n the same mob and CC was important.

Have you tried other classes in the retail game? What do you think of the other tanks? I know it’ll never feel the same but was curious what someone with your experience thought of all the other offerings

every single tank can do a +20 but as a warrior or druid u will get gatekeeped ALOT. i have a 2400 rating. and people decline me when i try to join +16 keys. its not like that 50% of the time i get declined its like 99% i get declined. its Literally mandatory to run your own keys which can be painful if u wanna run a Specific key

you're not getting declined because of your class in a 16, you're getting declined because there are tanks applying with much higher rating or gear being chosen over you

as Warrior i have that feeling too tbh :) but not with my bear, i get way more Invites as bear then on my warrior, what may be because druid has BR warrior has...well Nothing ^^ and i dont talk about like 16 keys, i talk 20+ keys. its a little more waiting then playing meta tanks but i play what is fun. if i dont get invites i just play my own key

Thats the shield you would get from Halls of Valor when it was in the m+ rotation. I'm not sure if its still available

If the current m+ dungeons dont go ham on magical dmg like in shadowlands i go warri 100% because you can pull huge and keep shield up pretty much all the time. There is nothing more fun for you and your dps then pulling 5 Packs together. Just sayin 😅

I play a brewmaster and I do 23+ keys with a resto druid friend; I disagree with you that it is a healer-reliant. Having the correct stats and gear, and the knowledge of when and where to use your defensives (you have a LOT of them) you can easily be self-reliant tank.

Yeah that one caught me off guard lol. My guild lead is a brewmaster main and can solo entire keys up to like +20, I'm a healer and other than throwing pain supp here and there I can basically ignore him the whole dungeon lol

Yeah you're right tbh, right now brew is honestly really strong (i still think its the sleeper tank of s3) I was more thinking of the fundamental idea behind brew being that it wont spike but it needs a healer to keep them healthy. I should have been more clear that, that is not really the case atm. My apologies

Warrior: Good beginner and all round tank. Built in mitigation with armor block, no one shots. Kind of boring rotation. Pally: Good beginner tank, great utility. Prone to one shots because cant keep 100% uptime on mitigation. DK: Most fun tank (Death Grip is best ability in the game?), good for beginners. Lacks utility, prone to one shots. Monk: Fun tank to play, loads of mobility and utility. Button bloat is extreme. Bear: Great for beginners. Simple rotation. Boring to play. VDH: Fun to play, frenetic. Loads of utility. Prone to one shots.

All tanks can do +20's and maybe till + 24-26 but monk druid and warrior will prob struggle at this key level. Dh, pallys and dks should be fine to go 0.1%

I mean you can play whatever you want. Make your groups and invite the haters. Ye some higher keys may be higher but it's just pve... Wow is just pve currently which isn't that .. much skill required to learn how a mob behaves.. PvP Is where you need to be more skillful usually. The wow community is super funny when they take pve seriously.. at least to me
